Introduction

Thoma's the younger brother of Karl Schwarz, and a bit of a hothead who's often too self-involved in his own ego to recognize proper protocol or follow basic advice. That said, he... generally has a good heart, and his poor behavior stems from having 'something to prove.'

Notable Facts

  • Though Thoma always felt he was worse than his brother, he still respects him, and feels proud of everything Karl has accomplished.

  • Thoma has a bad habit of addressing Karl as his brother even in formal settings, a mistake that Karl's always quick to correct.

  • Thoma's university was the Vash Coeard Academy, an institution that specializes in creating weapons and has, in fact, created 70% of the weapons used by the Imperial Army.

Skills

 Machinery

Thoma was always excellent with machines, able to build even advanced technology by himself. He created BEEK, and is proud of his achievements, but also struggles with the fact that his brother feels he relies too much on the capabilities of his machines.

Items

 BEEK Unit

Thoma created BEEK, an advanced artificial intelligence that he compares to an artificial Organoid, being superior in abilities and overall performance. This system is so detailed that it's hard to properly describe the whole unit, but the main computer is installed to his Dibison's Zoid Core. The control console for the Dibison attaches to a central processor and can detach entirely to be carried around as a remote communication device as well as a hand-held weapon (albeit an unwieldy one.) The barrel can fire an electromagnetic net or basic shells. When he gets back into his Zoid, he pushes the weapon back into the console, then inserts a drive into the dash board. A helmet then rises up and places itself automatically over his head, attached to a series of cables on the back that connect to the Zoid. Simply nudging the bottom of the helmet up will cause it to retract. Precise definitions of how each of these equipment items function is, unfortunately, not really described in depth. For example, BEEK seems fully functional even when Thoma is outside of the Zoid. In which case, it's unclear how the helmet actually provides any additional benefit (on a technological level.)

 Guardian Force Badge

Thoma carries a badge depicting the Guardian Force emblem.

History

Early Life, Episode 41

Throughout his life, Thoma lamented that he was worse than his brother, Karl, at just about everything. Martial arts, academics, etc. The one thing he exceeded at was machinery. While Karl upheld the family name, Thoma pushed to become even better with machines, believing that if he could one day create the world's greatest machine that he could be respected as a member of the Schwarz family.

Dibison, Episode ~38

Thoma acquired his Dibison through the Mutual Weapons Exchange Program, where the Republic and the Empire exchanged Zoids and other resources. This is why he pilots a Zoid that's typically from the Republic.

First Appearance, Episode 38

Thoma first appeared to investigate a border town of the Empire which was allegedly being threatened by Republican soldiers. Upon arriving, he mistook Bang as Hiltz after Sieg had been involved in an accident that resulted in him being painted red. After all, Hiltz traveled with a red Organoid. He called his brother to request help and confirmed Bang's story, while Fine, who Thoma fell in love with at first sight, cleaned a patch of the paint off to show that Sieg really was silver. Thoma realized his mistake and released them, but still didn't warm up to Bang.

Quite the opposite, in fact. Thoma would always see Bang as a rival due to his affinity for Fine, and constantly spoke down to his fellow Guardian Force pilot. When they located the 'Republic' group and realized they were bandits, they attacked. Even as the shots veered around due to magnetic interference and struck Bang's Blade Liger, Thoma continued to fire, disregarding the safety of his fellow pilot. In the end, they did manage to defeat the group, but it was messy.

Tracking, Episode 39

While investigating attacks on transporters in the Gigant Woods, Bang and Thoma hid their Zoids inside transport containers hauled on a Gustav. The Gustav itself was controlled by BEEK, Thoma's creation. When they were attacked by Helcats, Thoma called upon BEEK once more to analyze small disturbances in the environment to track them through the forest, back to their hideout. There, however, they were captured by Hiltz. After a quick rescue from Fine, they fought off the rest of the Helcats then investigated the nearby cave. A ruin hidden within revealed mysterious carvings, and had seemingly already been excavated by the group.

The Zoid Hunters, Episode 40

Thoma nearly busted a group of criminal Zoid pilots stealing military sleepers, but was shocked when his Dibison was taken down by a certain black Command Wolf. Thankfully Fine was in the area and happened to spot his stranded Zoid. Thoma was able to rejoin the Guardian Force's battle against the organization later on, taking out one of their Hel Digunners.

The Holciard Weapons Plant, Episode 41

The Guardian Force went to investigate a weapons disposal plant where all workers had gone radio silent following a distress signal. With the reactor at risk of overheating, Bang and Thoma traveled the two available routes to reach it, Thoma in his Dibison and Bang on foot. Thoma was attacked by his own brother, Karl, and his Iron Kong. They'd known Rease was involved, and now knew that she'd taken control of the base's inhabitants. Thoma struggled to compete with the high-performance Zoid. In the middle of the fight, Rease's control over Karl broke, but not her control over his Zoid. The most reasonable option was to destroy the Kong, at risk of killing Karl. While BEEK estimated the most efficient spot to strike to stop the Iron Kong, the strike would have to be accurate to the centimeter. As damage to the Dibison continued to stack BEEK went offline, unable to perform the careful maneuver. Thoma recalled his brother's advice to, no matter the situation, fight calmly and believe in yourself. He succeeded in landing the strike, saving Karl.

Raven, Episode 42

Thoma was with Bang Freiheit when they first witnessed that Raven was still alive. He joined the battle against him, but they weren't able to stop him from escaping with Shadow.

Love Confession, Episode 43

Thoma worked with Mary-Anne, Emperor Rudolph's fiancee to try to find a way to express his feelings for Fine. However, each attempt got interrupted in some way, even accidentally ending with Sieg thinking he was the one Thoma was interested in. In the end, he decided to wait for the right moment to confess his feelings himself.

However, soon after he left the area he encountered a black and red Geno Saurer. He realized it was Raven, and told him to leave the Empire for tarnishing its reputation. He pitted the Dibison's Megalo Max against the Geno Saurer's charged particle cannon, but the Dibison overheated. He was left seriously injured when his Zoid was hit by the particle cannon.

Recovery, Episode 44

After this, Thoma was taken to a military base by Moonbay, where he remained unconscious.

Raven, Episode 47

Thoma was present during Raven's questioning, where Karl asked him about his Geno Saurer. When Raven refused to comply, Thoma accused him of being nothing but empty threats, snatching Raven up by the collar. Raven showed no concern, openly mocking Thoma until Karl ordered Thoma to release Raven. At this point, Thoma was still injured from their last run-in.

Kidnapped, Episode 48

After the president of the Republic was kidnapped, the Guardian Force started a search. Thoma stumbled upon a man in the desert, not realizing that it was Hiltz until he'd exited his Zoid to check on him. By then it was too late. He was hit in the stomach and knocked unconscious, his Dibison then stolen by Ambient. Hiltz placed the president inside Thoma's Dibison and used it to attack Emperor Rudolph's location, using the president as a shield to prevent any counterattacks. He left Thoma and the other attendees in the Presidential Hammer Head, set to detonate. Thankfully Bang arrived in time to defuse the bomb.

Geno Breaker Battle, Episode 50

Fine offered Thoma an electrical impulse shield to protect the Dibison from a particle beam. When Halford later ordered the shield removed, he outright refused, claiming that it was a token of Fine's support and that he'd be carrying it into battle with him. The shield came in handy and saved the Dibison from Raven's Geno Breaker, but they soon ran out of ammo, surviving only because Bang drew the Breaker away. His Liger would be thrown over the cliff as a result.

Rescue, Episode 51

Thoma joined Irvine in scaling down the cliff to find Bang. Irvine insisted that Fine knew where to find him because of the power of love, a painful hit to Thoma. Nevertheless, they discovered that he'd been washed down stream. While traveling, Thoma tried to get information on the village of Nordens, only to find that the records had been sealed. After he learned from BEEK that the sealing of records was ordered by Prozen, he happily overrode the command, finding out that the village had been attacked by a Republic unit looking to capture an Ancient Zoidian girl.

When they eventually got to Nordens they found Bang under attack by the Imperial Army, lead by Seepers. Thoma used his authority, as granted by the Guardian Force to place Seepers under arrest.

The Phantom, Episode 53

The Guardian Force learned that Prozen loyalists had hired a hit man to kill Emperor Rudolph, and determined that this would likely take place at the Guylos Grand Prix, where the Emperor traditionally opened the event every year. Bang and Thoma took up places in the stands, looking for any suspicious individual. When they received a report of a mysterious boat disappearing out on the water, they went out in two Redler BCs and tracked it down. The boat detonated even without a direct hit, and they realized he must've already escaped underwater. After spotting the assassin they chased him to the Emperor's booth. This would've been the end for Rudolph, had he not placed a hologram in his stead. The bullet hit nothing, and the two Guardian Force pilots were there to arrest him after the fact.

The Zi Foundation, Episode 55

The Guardian Force began investigating weapons that were appearing on Zoids that had no business having them. Thoma recognized some of them as being recently developed by the Empire. They tracked the weapons back to the Zi Foundation, an organization for war orphans doubling as a weapons development operation. Thoma joined the final battle alongside Bang, resulting in them defeating the leader of the Zi Foundation, Garth.

The Trinity Ghost, Episode 56

Thoma was investigating the Trinity Ghost, a group that was targeting imperial soldiers. He became their next target after calling them childish and happily rose to the challenge only to be shot down when he failed to understand that the Cerberus, the giant three-headed Saber used by the Trinity Ghost wasn't real, ignoring BEEK's warnings that the real enemy was behind them. While in the hospital he analyzed small electronic devices collected from the battlefield, and told Bang that they projected images. This would contribute to them finding out the truth of the Trinity Ghost's imaginary monster. In spite of his injuries, Thoma showed up later to arrest the culprits.

The Death Stinger, Episode 57

Moonbay and Thoma followed Fine when she suddenly left the base to follow a massive energy signature. They became the first to witness the awakening of the Death Stinger, and Thoma was the first to try and stop it with the Megalo Max. Yet they watched in terror as it fired a particle cannon over their heads, aiming for Bang's ongoing battle against Raven. They were powerless to stop it when it escaped on the Hammer Kaiser.

Storm Sworders, Episode 58

After the Death Stinger retreated to the skies on a Hammer Kaiser, Hiltz sent a sizeable force to deal with Bang and his friends. A request came from the Republic for Bang and Thoma to pilot two Storm Sworders into the upper atmosphere to take out the Hammer Kaiser, which was orbiting Zi and allowing the Death Stinger to take out key locations with its particle cannon. Bang, however, felt that he couldn't leave the battle. After all, they were there for him. He gave Irvine his slot on the mission, and though Irvine hesitated, wanting to stand by his friend, he was convinced by Thoma to take part.

The two pilots boarded specially-modified Storm Sworders with massive booster units clamped over the wings. They made it to their intended altitude, but their first attempt at destroying the Hammer Kaiser honed in on a decoy instead. With no other option, they elected to move to close-range combat. This went against direct orders to retreat. Though they could barely maneuver due to the strain on the fuselage they deftly avoided the lasers coming from the Hammer Kaiser. Both Storm Sworders extended their blades and raked through the sides of the transport unit. It crashed down to Zi. Yet, as the two Sworders circled the crash site they were struck down by a particle cannon. The Death Stinger emerged from the wreckage, unharmed.

The Fall of New Helic City, Episode 59

Irvine and Thoma both mobilized to defend New Helic City against the Death Stinger. Unfortunately they met more or less the same defeat, being snatched up by the rear claws and thrown into nearby buildings, causing a system freeze.

Awakening the Ultra Saurus, Episode 60

When Thoma evacuated alongside the other forces to Wendeen Lake, he listened as they explained that the Ultra wouldn't awaken for two hours, and even then, they didn't know if it'd successfully wake up. Unfortunately, they also soon learned that Hiltz would arrive in just thirty minutes. Thoma joined Fine in trying to reroute the cables for the seventh power block that would awaken the core, linking it to the other six power blocks for a jump start. This endeavor saved the Ultra Saurus by seconds.

Sea Battle, Episode 61

Thoma joined others in the Guardian Force in defending the Ultra Saurus from Sinkers sent by Hiltz, almost sliding off the deck when the Ultra had to make a sharp turn.

Gravity Cannon Test, Episode 62

During the first test of the Gravity Cannon Thoma was piloting a Hammer Head. They knew they'd be discovered by Hiltz's forces as soon as the weapon was tested, so they were prepared to defend the Ultra. Sure enough, an army of Sinkers soon arrived. Thoma joined Irvine in hunting down many of them, catching some off guard when they'd suddenly surface from the water.

Return of the Delta Formation, Episode 63

With so few shells for the Gravity Cannon it was decided to bring back the Delta Formation, recycling it to make use of the energy shields on all three Zoids to establish a large triangular barrier. If they could trap the Death Stinger, they could kill it with the Gravity Cannon. They first tested this on a Gojulas, but during the live combat Hiltz managed to shatter the shield because they'd played it too conservatively on energy. As a consequence, the Death Stinger managed to shoot down the second of the three gravity shells that'd been created. They had just one more shot at it. Bang got back up, urging Thoma and Irvine to try again and dedicate more power to the shields. This time, it held. The Gravity Cannon landed a direct hit on the Death Stinger. As a final act of spite, however, it fired its particle cannon and hit just behind Thoma's Dibison. He was thrown to the ground and fell unconscious directly in front of the expanding gravity field.

Support Fire, Episode 64

Luckily for Thoma, Bang shot out the ground underneath his Dibison, allowing it to slide just far enough forward to escape the gravity field. Once he woke up Fine helped him load the Dibison onto a Gustav that she then drove. Soon after, Ambient revived the Death Stinger. It immediately targeted the largest threat, the Ultra Saurus. With the Ultra disabled only Bang and Irvine were left to pursue the escaping Zoid, which was still injured and susceptible to damage. Thoma asked Fine to drive him to the battlefield. His Dibison couldn't walk, but it could still fire. They arrived to find both feline Zoids snared in the Death Stinger's claws, and Thoma's concentrated fire was able to free them. With all three Zoids focusing their fire on the Death Stinger, Hiltz aimed for a distraction instead. He targeted the cockpit of the Gustav. Thoma jumped out of his Dibison and rushed up to the cockpit to find Fine unconscious. As she began to awaken, strange particles and white light surrounded her body. Her and the Death Stinger mysteriously vanished before their very eyes.

Repairs, Episode 65 ~ 67

Though Irvine and Thoma wanted to continue following Bang, Hermann ordered them both back to the Ultra Saurus to have their Zoids repaired. As the Death Saurer advanced they could only stand by and listen to intercom announcements of failure after failure. When Bang decided to have himself and the Blade Liger fired out of the Gravity Cannon, Thoma took up a position in the cannon's control room, reading off the generator output as well as confirming when they were locked on to the Death Saurer.
