- Introduction

- Details of Design

Cockpit

Unlike other Zoids, the Geno Saurer's cockpit is located in the chest rather than the head. The pilot sits completely protected by the metal hatch, making it one of the best covered cockpits in the Empire, and safer than standard head cockpits.[3] This hatch opens using a hinge at the bottom, allowing the pilot to step out.

The anime-specific depiction of this cockpit design shows it being attached by two rails that extend downwards, allowing the pilot to board the Zoid from the ground. This feature isn't present in other media, but it's still interesting to note.

- Prototype Geno Saurer

In December 1999, CoroCoro Comic posted an interesting article featuring the upcoming Geno Saurer under Code Name "T-Rex". It was touted for its horizontal walk because previously dinosaur types had only been able to move with a completely upright posture. A horizontal walk was hard to keep balanced during motorized walk cycles, and had a higher risk of falling over. The Geno Saurer was the first Zoid to overcome this obstacle.

Interestingly, this prototype also differed significantly from the final product, and while that disclaimer is clear on the page, it's one of the few Zoids whose (published) prototype has distinctive features that the final product does not. The initial design showed a Geno Saurer that was black and red, with silver vents. It also showed the Geno Saurer with a full tail of cooling units / vents, as seen in the tv show. The final product abandoned this feature for unknown reasons, and only kept the two larger panels at the base of the tail.

* The above image was spliced together from two damaged, incomplete cut outs from CoroCoro. The middle of the page was redrawn, so some details and text in that small margin may not be accurate.

- Concept Art

This concept art was shown in CoroCoro with the prototype Geno Saurer. Though the basic design language is there you can still see a number of design differences, especially with the lack of curvature on the head and the back weapon.

This set of setting materials from the Zoids Chaotic Century anime showed off the design of the cockpit, including the extending seat used to climb into it.

- Military History

ZAC 2100, January, Lietenant (Test Pilot) Ritz Runstedt's Geno Saurer

The Geno Saurer was developed to settle an internal debate in the Empire: Was it better to augment old Zoids, or to create new ones based on the Organoid System, a super-technology from ancient times. To determine which option was best suited for mass production, to invade the Republic's homeland, Delpoi, both types of units were pitted against each other. A remodeled Saber Tiger AT and Red Horn GC against Ritz Runstedt's Geno Saurer. The Geno Saurer instantly destroyed both test Zoids, and was ordered for mass production immediately, in spite of it being hard to find pilots for them.

ZAC 2100, March, Lietenant Ritz Runstedt's Geno Saurer

While the Geno Saurer had achieved amazing results in its initial test, it hit a major snag in mass production. Nobody could handle it. Only one in ten ace pilots could withstand the mental damage incurred by the Organoid System, and so the Geno Saurer's development plans fell under review. In the mean time, Ritz's Geno Saurer was deployed to Ergyle Beach, where it confronted the Republic's defense forces along with ally Rev Raptors. Only one hour after the battle had begun, the defense forces were destroyed. The Empire was one step closer to seizing Southern Europa and all of the ancient ruins hidden there.

During the same month, Ritz Rundstedt arrived at the Galil Ruins and spent two days exploring the massive underground city. He was searching for the missing piece of the Organoid System. However, before finding it, he sensed Arthur Borgmann's Blade Liger. Although Ritz was the one to start the fight, he struggled to keep up with the more athletic Blade Liger, and ultimately, he chose to take an unknown Zoid Core from a nearby cultivation capsule instead. He fled, collapsing part of the Galil Ruins in the process. This core would later be cultivated into the Death Stinger.

ZAC 2100, July, Guylos Empire Special Forces

Modified Geno Saurers in the form of Proto Breakers and Geno Troopers were mobilized as a part of the Special Forces. Their mission was to distract the Republican forces long enough for their allies to escape, and for this task, they were mobilized without all Zoids in the force being able to be properly combat tested. This mission, though successful in its original goal, ended with every Zoid of the Special Forces unit being wiped out by their allied Death Stinger after the Zoid went berserk. The only survivor was the Commander's Lightning Saix. Two months later Zoids from this battle were said to show up in the Death Stinger's nest, their cores used to feed its young.

- Equipment Information

- Anchor x2

Anchor x2: アンカー×2

The anchors are placed at the heels of the Geno Saurer, and when it takes a firing stance, they anchor it in place. This provides additional stability.

It is a common mistake (partially due to the anime) that the Zoid must be anchored to use the Particle Cannon, but this is a trait developed in the anime, and only seen occasionally in some games that reference it. The general print media shows that it's quite capable of firing without being anchored, even while flying in the air.

- Focused Charged Particle Cannon

Focused Charged Particle Cannon: 集束荷電粒子砲

Interestingly, the Geno Saurer is designed as one big Charged Particle Cannon, able to take on a firing stance. During this stance, the anchors flatten against the ground, the spine aligns in a straight line, and the cooling vents on the tail open up while particles gather in the mouth. It then fires a focused beam strong enough to obliterate medium-scale Zoids.

- Hyper Killer Claw x2

Hyper Killer Claw x2: ハイパーキラークロー×2

The Hyper Killer Claws refer to the hands, which have large silver claws. The Official Fan books show the claws with a slight blue glow, and imply that they were used to decapitate a Saber Tiger AT.

- Hyper Killer Fangs

Hyper Killer Fangs: ハイパーキラーファング

The Geno Saurer's mouth is lined with sharp teeth, referred to as the Hyper Killer Fangs. They don't see a lot of use in the series.

- Hyper Strike Claw x2

Hyper Strike Claw x2: ハイパーストライククロー×2

The Hyper Strike Claws are the large talons on the Geno Saurer's feet. They don't see much use other than literally stomping enemies.

- Laser Gun

Laser Gun: レーザーガン

The Laser Gun is a small gun attached to the top of the Geno Saurer's head. In the show this type of weapon is displayed as firing quick, singular energy rounds. The original Tomy model kit included two types of Laser Gun as interchangeable parts.

The one pictured on the top right is the standard. The second one is longer, and generally referred to as the "Raven Type", specifically used by Raven's Geno Saurer.

- Laser Sensors

Laser Sensors: レーザーセンサー

The Laser Sensors are the eyes and corresponding glass plate on the Geno Saurer's head. This item doesn't seem to be described in use, but many real-life laser sensors are used to measure distance between objects.

- Long Range Pulse Laser Rifle x2

Long Range Pulse Laser Rifle x2: ロングレンジパルスレーザーライフル×2

The Long Range Pulse Laser Rifles are two large rifles on the back of the Geno Saurer. Each rifle can rotate up and down independently of one another, allowing them to target enemies both in front of the Zoid and above it. In the show, these are shown firing energy bullets, and the two rifles tend to be depicted firing simultaneously.

- Openable Cooling Units

Openable Cooling Units:

Though not mentioned in the official stats, almost all iterations of Geno Saurer feature some form of Openable Cooling Units [2] on the tail. Sometimes on all segments, sometimes just at the base. Their purpose is to disperse excess heat while firing the Focused Charged Particle Cannon. They're sometimes shown used in conjunction with the leg vents and propulsion units as additional heat dissipation.

- Propulsion Units

Propulsion Units:

Another item not listed in the official stats, but generally considered to have in most media. The Propulsion Units[2] are on the back of the legs, where the armor lifts up during use. They can be used to achieve high speeds, and in some media, allow the Geno Saurer to hover high in the air. Even in the battle story, the Geno can fly high above the ground. In the OFB, the Propulsion Units are seen used for additional heat dissipation during and after firing the CPC.

- Zoids Chaotic Century / Guardian Force

A variety of Geno Saurers appear in the first anime, most notably piloted by Raven. Though he first obtains this deadly Zoid from Prozen, it is later defeated by Bang Freiheit's Blade Liger, only for him to get a second Geno Saurer with a redder color theme. Later on, three Geno Saurers were seen in Eveopolis, and fought against Raven and his Geno Breaker.

- Zoids Official Fan Book

In Official Fan Book 2, the Geno Saurer was created as the first Organoid System test machine, developed from the very beginning to integrate the ancient technology. It was piloted by Ritz Runstedt, and though violence had never been a part of the test pilot's life, the influence of the Organoid System encouraged his destructive tendencies.
