- Organoids

- Introduction

Organoids are small, human-sized Zoids that are left over artifacts from the Ancient Zoidian era. They primarily featured in the Zoids Chaotic Century anime, where there were four, all sharing a similar body schema. They're known to be able to dissolve into energy and fuse to the core of a Zoid, where they take a form wrapped around the Zoid Core and dramatically improve a Zoid's abilities, often bringing them to their maximum combat potential in an instant.

This article will be approaching Organoids from the perspective of their main featured media, the Zoids anime. It will not touch on the Organoid System (the one from the battle story, a media that doesn't really acknowledge the anime!style Organoids outside of a single diorama prop for 'the interface' or the Organoid System of the New Century /ZERO anime, which in spite of rampant fan speculation isn't confirmed to have anything at all to do with Organoids.)

- Organoid Pods

When Ancient Zoidians were sealed, their Organoids were sealed alongside them in special pods. Upon their awakening, the Organoids were supposed to fuse with the Ancient Zoidians and restore their memories. It seems that when Organoids are close to waking up, their pulse can be heard from outside the pod.

The awakening of Organoids and Zoidians seems to have often been spaced out. Not every Organoid woke up with a partner. Shadow, for example, doesn't seem to have one in the anime. Ambient woke up at a different time from Hiltz, and there's no evidence that Specular woke up at the same time as Rease. How or why they were separated from their Ancient Zoidian partners is never stated.

- Fusing To Zoids

An Organoid's key abilities are focused around their ability to fuse to Zoids. During this process the Organoid becomes a bolt of pure energy, passing through the metal of the Zoid and reappearing in the core chamber. There, they fuse to the core, with the panels opening up to embrace the core and the body deforming to take on a new state specifically for this fusion. Once the Organoid is fused, strange tendrils reach out from the core and attach to the outer walls of the core chamber. This fusion also causes light to pour out of the Zoid. The color depends on the Organoid. Sieg creates white or pale gold light, Shadow blue, Specular blue, and Ambient red or orange.

Zoids who're fused to Organoids receive a noticeable boost to their capabilities, be it speed, power, or weapon damage. This comes about from increasing the Zoid's potential, and if the Organoid is knowledgeable enough, Zoids can be boosted to their maximum potential instantly upon fusing.

- Fusing To People

As discussed earlier, when Organoids fused to Ancient Zoidians they were supposed to restore their memories. However, according to a director interview, the Organoid's original purpose was to allow Ancient Zoidians to pilot Zoids without the use of cockpits. This means that Organoids are also able to fuse to people as a universal trait, as each Organoid was partnered with a Zoidian. For this, the panels on their body open up, revealing a void of light. Cables shoot out from the light and wrap around their masters, pulling them into the Organoid's body. In this state, the pilot can even be transferred through the metal to the Zoid Core alongside the Organoid. In the event that the Zoid is destroyed, the Organoid can pull the pilot directly out of their seat and escape. We don't actually get the opportunity to see this method of piloting a Zoid, but when Sieg was trying to resurrect the Shield Liger, Fine was fused to the core with him.

- Notable Details
  • Organoids can actually sniff and seem to have a sense of smell, shown by Sieg tracking Bang.
  • Though Organoids appeared well known in certain circles (such as research units) some people believed that they were nothing more than made up stories.
  • Organoids are more intelligent than average Zoids. They're able to communicate clearly with their Ancient Zoidians on a telepathic level, understand normal speech, are fully capable of independent combat and decision making, and can help with complex tasks (such as being instructed to turn off a valve in a remote part of the building.)
  • Though Zoids are able to evolve naturally overtime on their own, Dr. D noted that the only unusual aspect of Organoid evolution was just how fast it happened.
  • When the Ancient Zoidians were sealed away, it's said that their memories were sealed in the Organoids. The intention was that when they both awoke, the Zoidian would fuse to the Organoid and regain those memories, but if the Organoid fused with somebody else first (such as the case with Bang and Sieg), the memories wouldn't be able to be properly restored.
  • Organoids have a limit to how long they can stay fused. When Rease was discussing the Geno Breaker, an especially powerful Zoid, Rease citing most Organoids reaching their limit at 60 seconds. Shadow lasted almost three times that.
  • An Organoid that has over-extended its power may be able to be revived by an ore known as Zoid Magnite.
  • Organoids, like Zoids, have a 'pulse'.
  • All animation has to have a degree of forgiveness for breaking logic, such as the metal components of Zoids bending to accommodate certain poses. Organoids are no exception. They can show different bending of the metal that composes them, such as narrowing or widening their eyes, wrinkling their noses, etc.
  • Some Organoids exhibit color anomalies. When Ambient first woke up he was black, though it's possible this was done for the dramatic effect of the scene. When Shadow fuses to the Geno Breaker, he turns its eyes blue, even though other Organoids don't prompt this change. In the Zoids Saga games, the Organoid Pulse changes colors depending on how you sort his stats.

- Abilities Exhibited By Organoids

  • The ability to fuse to a Zoid and recover its injuries. (Sieg, Shadow, Ambient)
  • The ability to revive a Zoid from a dead or dying state. (Sieg, Ambient)
  • The ability to instantly boost a Zoid to its full potential in a way that brings about visible evolution. (Specular, Ambient)
  • The ability to evolve a Zoid into a significantly modified form through the use of an Evolution Cocoon, a process that takes days. In Sieg's case, this ability was part of the same process that resurrected the Shield Liger. (Shadow, Sieg)
  • The ability to fuse two Zoid Cores together. (Ambient)
  • The ability to dramatically increase a Zoid's combat power, be it speed, strength, or power output. This is a universal trait. Examples include Shadow making the Saber Tiger strong enough to lunge through an E-Shield with just a claw strike, Shadow making the Geno Breaker's particle cannon powerful enough to break through the Death Saurer's energy shield, Sieg dramatically increasing the Blade Liger's speed, etc.

- History

Creation, Ancient Zoidian Era

Organoids were said to have been created by the Ancient Zoidians as a means of piloting Zoids without the use of cockpits. We see interesting examples of this, such as when Fine was fused to the core of the Shield Liger alongside Sieg. In the Ancient Zoidian era, every Zoidian was said to have an Organoid, who they traveled everywhere with. However, when Zoidian civilization began to fall and the race faced imminent extinction, some Ancient Zoidians were sealed away inside twin capsules, one for them and one for their Organoid. They'd remain in these facilities, in a dormant state, for countless years.

Revival and Capture, Modern Era

Eventually, when Humans immigrated to Planet Zi they would discover these buildings. Only, now they were nothing more than ruins, many of which were in a poor state. They began studying the civilization that came before them. Some ruins were converted into bases or fortresses for military use, and on rare occasions they found some of these capsules, awakening the pair within. Though this did happen, the fact that some people believed Organoids to be mere myth makes it seem that such events were extraordinarily rare. The Empire was said to have found an Organoid before the Republic (Ambient) and had already begun studying it when the Republic first found one (Shadow).

With such a long degree of time passing it's also possible that there were occasions where only one or the other survived. For example, in the anime Shadow was never shown to have been awakened alongside a partnered Ancient Zoidian and we have no idea what happened to them. In addition, it seems implied that sometimes they willingly elected to awaken one and not the other, unless the pods were somehow separated beforehand. Ambient's pod was being actively studied by Raven's parents. At the time that it awoke, the Organoid went berserk and killed the researchers, but Hiltz was shown to have already been present on the scene, lurking in the background. Fully clothed, so allegedly awake for some time before Ambient's awakening. When Rease was awakened as a child there was also no indication that she had Specular with her at the time, and there was never any mention of an Organoid being involved in the events that followed. The military's interest was solely in capturing the Ancient Zoidian girl.

In addition, once it was realized how valuable an Organoid could be in battle they became highly sought after, both by the military and by bandits and mercenaries who thought that there'd be untold value in acquiring one of these creatures. Entire military mobilizations happened in the name of capturing Organoids, and Prozen, the former regent of the Guylos Empire invested 5 years in capturing Shadow after he'd awakened and escaped.
