At this point the Proto Beast Liger was only referred to as "Liger" in the show. It gained the name "Proto Beast Liger" when a kit of it was released as part of the Zoids Wild Biographies line, long after the series had ended.
The Proto Beast Liger was restored by Leo, and is frequently seen acting on its own.
History
Courier Services, Episode 1
When the series began, the Proto Beast Liger was used for Buzz and Leo's courier service, delivering packages to people in the area. However, when Leo attempted to help Sally Land, they were dragged into a fight against the Empire. Proto Beast Liger was nearly killed by Luc and his Cannon Bull before Sally threw her pendant, carrying technology invented by her grandfather, at Leo's Zoid, causing it to be instantly transformed into the complete version of the Beast Liger.
Revival, Episode 14 Beast Liger (Revived), Beast Liger HA
When the Genospino launched its assault the Beast Liger was nearly killed. As it lay dying in the hangar, it suddenly felt a calling, and rose to its feet. It was drawn to the secret lake of Mosaic by the activation of a regeneration cube, and when the Liger walked into the water, it was encased by a metal cube of pipes and sheeting. When this casing finally broke, the Liger was revived as the Proto Beast Liger. It was noted by Dr. Land that the healing properties of these Regeneration Cube terminals has a profound effect on lion-types specifically, and miraculously, the Beast Liger was restored.
Now restored, the Beast Liger was able to shed the shoulder armor that had been too painful to remove before, due to shrapnel wedged through the armor. It fought to drive away the Drei Panther, who had infiltrated the city.
Afterwards, Liger was equipped with any weapons they could salvage from the battlefield. This resulted in a whopping 13 additional weapons, all of which Liger seemed happy to weapons spam. In the midst of its second encounter with the Drei Panther, the Liger suddenly shined gold, and evolved. It became the Rising Liger, and won its battle.
Proto Beast Liger (Boosters)
Pilot(s): Leo Conrad
Primary Army: None
This version of the Proto Beast Liger included boosters. It was in the process of being developed by Leo Conrad, the Proto Beast Liger's pilot, as a means to jump Aegis Valley, a large chasm. The idea was that if they could clear the chasm, they could dramatically improve their travel time to the areas beyond it, making their courier business far more lucrative. However, during the episode where it was featured, the boosters were still imperfect. One malfunctioned and fell from the Zoid, and in the end, it never succeeded in making the jump.
If you go by the kit, this is considered the default variation of the Proto Beast Liger.

- Notable Facts
Leo had tried 24 times to jump Aegis Valley.
In the Zoids Wild EX ZERO story, which was released as part of Hobby Japan Magazine, Leo witnesses the story's protagonist, Shishio Ryuu jump Aegis Valley. He was using his Armed Liger (a different Liger subspecies) and its All-Weather High-Powered Boosters. This was the first written instance of Leo getting the idea to jump Aegis Valley with the Proto Beast Liger.
After the release of the EX story, the Zoids Wild Biographies line began. It was a series of model kits that each had their own web story. The Proto Beast Liger's story changes the history. In this version the Proto Beast Liger first tried to jump Aegis Valley while trying to escape attacking bandits. Afterwards, Leo felt inspired, believing Liger could make the jump someday.
One could argue that he first got the idea from the Biographies story, but only realized that boosters could be used to accomplish this task after witnessing Shishio Ryuu jump the valley. However, it's far more likely that the Biographies story simply retconned the original inspiration. The writers may not have read the EX story, or simply decided that the Liger needed a newer, more concrete narrative.

Proto Beast Liger (Courier)
Pilot(s): Leo Conrad
Primary Army: None
An unnamed variation, this version of the Proto Beast Liger attaches a courier box to the back. It's used to help support Buzz and Leo's courier service. When at a destination, they move a small lift to the Liger's side to lower the box to the ground, so that they can unload the items. This is the version that is ultimately transformed into the Beast Liger. Hopefully no longer carrying any packages.
