Zoids Saga Walkthrough

Overworld

You'll find yourself in the overworld for the first time, but it'll just be for a brief comment before heading out.

"Anyway, let's head to the nearby town of Arcana."

The Town of Arcana

Roman's House

"Anyway, let's split up and investigate the town."
 "......"

The group momentarily separates to check out the city, then regroup.

 "There are guards everywhere."
 "... This is ostentatious..."
 "What are you saying?"
"The town's ruler has changed. I guess they want to make a show of that."
 "Damn it!"

Their conversation is erupted when a bunch of the guards approach.

Soldier (Captain)  "Hey! You! Don't you know there's a curfew?!"
 "No."
Soldier 1  "What!?"
Soldier 2  "Why you! You're under arrest!"
 "Please excuse us, soldiers."
"We just got back from the countryside a little while ago."
Soldier (Captain)  "The countryside, huh? Which countryside? What's your business in Arcadia?"
"Uh, well... from the north, beyond the mountains..."
Soldier (Captain)  "Hmph, how vague. Hey! Take them away!"
"W-w-wait! We really are just travelers!"
Soldier (Captain)  "Quiet!"
Old Man  "Oh, oh, is that you, Thomas!? I've been waiting for you!"
"?! Ah! Uncle! Long time no see! We just arrived!"
Soldier (Captain)  "Ah, and who are you? Are you acquainted with these people?"
Old Man  "My name is Roman, and I'm the caretaker of this town. He's one of my relatives, Thomas."
 "Th-that's right. I'm Thomas."
Soldier (Captain)  "How suspicious. Is that true?"
Roman  "It's true. Here, here, take this."
Soldier (Captain)  "Hmph! Be more careful from now on."
Roman  "Prince Athle, is that you?"
 "!!"
"Just who are you, old man?"
Roman  "Not here. Please come with me to my house."

The conversation switches to a location above the bar.

"So, old man, you used to serve...?"
Roman  "Yes. I served the King of Arcadia. Although, that was a long time ago."
"Do you have any information about our enemies? Or about the current state of the castle?"
 "......"
Roman  "I don't know anything about your enemies."
"I thought I saw fire rising from the castle, but then they took it over in a flash"
"I also don't know what happened to the King of Arcadia..."
 "......"
 "... Is that so..."
 "......"
"... This is a problem. We don't have enough information."
"Even if we tried to retake the castle, we have no idea what the enemy's objective is..."
Roman  "... I may not know if it's their true objective, but..."
 "Do you know something!?"
Roman  "Hmm. I heard them talking about something to do with a sealed room inside the castle."
"A sealed room!? So the enemy's objective is an ancient relic?"
 "......"
"It's too early to say it's the ancient relic based just on that."
"But it's the only clue we have."
"... That's true. It doesn't seem like we have the time to hesitate."
"Yeah. We'll just have to chase after them."
 "Prince!"
 "......"

Regina and Athle go on ahead.

"... Good grief, they're so hasty."
 "Hehe... They're a good team."
"They certainly are. Let's head out, too. Thank you, old man."
Roman  "Be careful."

First Floor Bar

When you go downstairs you'll end up in the bar below Roman's house. Be sure to go back and talk to him to get the Siege Attack command. If you happen to miss it, you can return at a later date. He'll be downstairs by then but will still give you the deck command. There's a few people sitting around to chat with, but not much important info to be had. Leave through the front door and you can finally explore a bit!

包囲攻撃 Siege Attack Halves the damage of all allies and halves the evasion rate of all enemies.

Zoid Pilot:  "Those other imperial forces have captured the castle while the Republic and the Empire were locked in a stalemate..."
Townsperson:  "Another war... It may be fine for us old folks who don't have much time left, but what about the youngins? Will there be peace by the time they grow up?"
Master:  "To think the kingdom could be captured so easily... And on top of that, there's now a curfew being imposed. My business is ruined."

Exploring The Town of Arcana

Overview

Arcana is the main town in Arcadia Kingdom, and its got all the generic locations you'll come to expect. Since this is your first time encountering most of them, I'll include an overview of each one, along with menus. Before then, there's a few people around town you can talk to for general public opinion stuff.

Boy:  "A Zoid went into the castle! When I grow up, I'm going to be a Zoid pilot, too!!"
Imperial Soldier:  "The Kingdom of Arcadia is under the control of our Imperial Army! Anyone who resists us will be arrested!"
Townsperson:  "Until yesterday, I thought peace would last forever...! What'll become of us now...?"
Imperial Soldier:  "A curfew has been imposed throughout the entire kingdom! Citizens are not to go outside without a valid reason!"
Imperial Army Soldier:  "Going outside is forbidden for ordinary citizens!"
Townsperson:  "Damn! They're acting so high and might! ... Although, there's nothing I can do about it."

Zoid Research Institute

The Zoid Research Institute, as well as the other key locations (item and weapon shops) will always be immediately distinguishable by the logo on the front of the building, in this case a Blade Liger. The Research Institute is probably the most important building in the game. You'll be regularly visiting it almost every time you go to a new area.

Main Assistant (Middle)

ゾイドの復舌  Zoid Restoration
ゾイド開発  Zoid Development
ゾイド乗せ換え  Zoid Transfers
ゾイドを売る  Sell Zoids

The main assistant is the guy in the middle. As soon as you talk to him and open the above menu, all of your Zoid's stats will be restored.

Zoid Restoration will bring your Zoids back from being fully knocked out. Your hit points, energy, etc. persists from battle to battle, so you have to be careful about keeping an eye on it. If your Zoid hits 0 HP it'll be unusable until you come back here and restore it. It's good to get in the habit of using the command "Prince's Encouragement" as you battle through random enemies in the overworld, to keep topped off.

Zoid Deveolopment is where you'll go to create new Zoids. Generally speaking, you'll need the Zi Data (usually picked up from treasure chests or battles in the overworld) and some extra parts (same methods). It helps to make good use of the Zi Data Collection command if you're after something in particular.

Zoid Transfers allow you to swap pilots to new Zoids. This isn't something you can do when traveling, it has to be done at a research facility.

Sell Zoids is, as the name implies, where you go to sell your Zoids.

Secondary Assistant (Left)

When you talk to this guy he'll go over the Deck Commands and how to use them. Be sure to talk to him to get the Data Collection deck command, which'll save you a lot of headache in battle.

Assistant:  "Have you used your Deck Commands yet? Deck Commands are various tactics and operational actions."

"You can select up to six commands before the start of the battle using the Command Creation setting."

"You can use one command per turn during battle, and once a command is used, it can't be used again until the next battle."

"If you use them effectively, you'll gain an advantage in battle."

"Now, please use this command developed at our institute."

[Learned the "Data Collection" Deck Command]

データ収集 Data Collection If you completely destroy all remaining enemies on the turn that you use this skill, you're guaranteed to obtain Zi Data.

Dr. T (Right)

When you talk to Dr. T it'll trigger a conversation, both covering some lore and starting you on the next phase of your journey.

"Um, could you take a look at this Zi Data?"
"This is amazing! It's the Zi Data for the Trinity Liger!"
"How do you know about the Trinity Liger?"
"My name is Dr. T. I'm the head of the Zoid Research Institute in the town of Arcana."

"I was commissioned by the King of Arcadia to research Arcadia's legacy."

"Among the legacy items researched, the Trinity Liger was our biggest research project."

"But its whereabouts were unknown... Where did you find this?"
"In the back of a secret passage in Arcadia Castle..."
"I see... Then it probably wouldn't have even been found if something like this hadn't happened."

"Is His Majesty the King safe?"
 "......"
"Ah, umm... with this data, would you be able to manufacture the Trinity Liger?"
"Hmm, it'd be easy with any other Zoid, but... the Trinity Liger's core is special."
"... Could it be that there might even only be one in the world?"
"And without it, it'd be impossible to manufacture the Trinity Liger."
 "Unfortunately..."
 "I see..."

Item Shop

The item shop is where you'll pick up most of your single-use things, such as 'potions', escape pods, etc. I'll always try to list these in the same order they appear, but you can match up which item is which in-game by comparing the price.

Currently Available Items

Core Activation Ion (Small) 500 G  Restores 50 HP
Emergency Escape Capsule 15,000 G  Returns you to the Research Institute
Shockwave 2,800 G  Cures paralysis

Weapons Shop

The Weapons Shop is where you'll pick up extra armaments. Picking some of these up will help a LOT with handling the overworld at the start, because the multi-target abilities gives you some crowd control. Just remember to also keep an eye on your EN while traveling.

Assault Beam Gun 2300 G AT: 40  AC: 100%  EP: 0 Effects: None
Range: 1-2 Single
Shock Cannon 3200 G AT: 55  AC: 100%  EP: 0 Effects: None
Range: 1-1 Single
4-Shot Missiles 2800 G AT: 48  AC: 100%  EP: 0 Effects: None
Range: 1-3 Single
Pulse Laser Gun 3600 G AT: 25  AC: 95%  EP: 2 Effects: None
Range: 1-1 Wide

We briefly discussed stats in Part 1, but let's expand on that a bit here, since it affects your buying choices.

As you can imagine, AT is Attack (the damage dealt), AC is Accuracy (odds of hitting), EP is the energy points consumed, (Special) Effects are abilities such as stun, and Range is how far the weapon fires.

Range is an important factor of crowd control. The first 2 numbers represent how many rows it can target. A 1-1 weapon can only target the row directly ahead of the Zoid. Pay attention to this because if you put a 1-1 weapon on a Zoid in the back row, none of the enemies will be in range. Most weapons have the target number represented as "Single", which will hit only 1 enemy Zoid in its effective range. If it says Wide, it means it'll hit all 3 Zoids in the row. This makes the Pulse Laser Gun particularly useful for grinding through overworld enemies. There are more ranges than that, but we'll cover them later.

Anyway, talk to the guy on the right to pick up a Deck Command.

Townsperson  "Let me teach you a tactic I know."

[Learned the Deck Command "Power Saving"]

節電 Power Saving Immobilizes all allied Zoids and restores 50% EP to the selected Zoid.

Exploring The Kingdom of Arcadia

Overview

Finally! After a long introduction you're finally set free to explore the world of Arcadia. This area is small, but don't worry, there'll be plenty of other overworld maps for you to explore. You'll start by the Town of Arcana. The Space-Time jump point over on the right isn't accessible at this point in the game. Well, it is, but all that's in there is a locked door.

Roaming Zoids: Gator, Godos, Hel Digunner, Iguan, Merda, Molga

You'll find a few enemies roaming about. In this game, they're visible on the overworld instead of random pop-up battles, so you can run from and avoid fights. If you get caught, you can run and the Zoid in the overworld will pause for a moment, giving you a chance to get away.

Take some time here and grind some battles. Get a few levels, a good bit of cash, buy weapons at the shop, and gather items and Zi Data. The only Zoid really worth creating at this point is the Redler. Though it can only use fixed weapons, the tail blade can strike 2 enemies, so it's worth replacing one of your wolves in the front with a Redler. They're hard to hit with non-anti-air weapons and that can pay off.

Now that you've officially been set free I recommend taking a look at the menu guide to figure out what all the menu options do, as well as the basic instructions for battle sequences.

That more or less covers what you'll find in and around Arcana. The next section will cover your return to Arcadia Castle.
