Introduction

Opening Sequence

 "......"
 "... Prince... Prince!"
 "......"
 "Prince Athle!!"
 "......"
"Prince, are you even listening? ... Your studies have only just begun."
"Prince, you'll be the future King of Arcadia."
"You need to concentrate more on your studies..."
"Now, continuing from yesterday. Chapter eight of the Kingdom Chronicles..."
"... Since then, diplomatic relations were established with the Republic."
"... That's enough for today. Let's take a short break."
 "......"
 "However!"
 "......"
"Don't leave this room! Understood, Prince Athle?"

Exploring The Castle

After the opening sequence you'll be free to explore the castle. There are stairs leading up and down, and you'll find Athle's mother, the Queen, over in the upper right room.

Exploration Dialogue:

Queen of Arcadia:  "Athle... What's wrong? You're supposed to be studying right now, aren't you?"
Royal Guard:  "Recently, the conflicts on the Central Continent have been in a lull. It'd be wonderful if the entire planet could enjoy an era of peace..."
"The Kingdom of Arcadia is a small country, surrounded by untrustworthy nations. His Majesty the King must be very worried."

Floor 2

If you head up to the second floor at this point you'll find an empty throne room, so head back down and explore the castle.

Royal Guard:  "His Majesty the King is currently inspecting the castle grounds."

Floor 1B

If you take the top stair case, you'll end up on Floor B1. It's a pretty similar design. You can find Regina in the room on the right (though she'll only lecture you for sneaking away from your studies) and you can find the first Beast Warriors, Jack, in the left room. Be sure to talk to Jack.

Exploration Dialogue

Royal Guard:  "The Three Beast Warriors are appointed from our country, the Empire, and the Republic. Of those, the one from the Empire is Lord Earth."
Royal Guard:  "The Three Beast Warriors are appointed from our country, the Empire, and the Republic. Of those, the one from the Republic is Lord Jack."
Royal Guard:  "As expected of a former Republic soldier, the army that once opposed the might of the Empire with its intellect, Lord Jack's tactical theories are always so insightful."

"Prince! I told you stay in your room! You're not thinking about slacking off, are you?!"

 "Prince? What's wrong?"
 "......"
"... Hmm? I'm guessing right now..."
"... You've snuck out on your studies again, isn't that right?"
 "......"
"... Heh... I can just picture Regina's face."
 "You shouldn't trouble Regina, Prince."
"Considering her position is also one of the important duties of a prince."
 "......"

Floor 2B

When you enter this floor you'll find both the main exit at the bottom and the downwards staircase at the left to be blocked off by guards, who'll ask you not to leave. Go to the mess hall on the left and talk to Earth.

Exploration Dialogue

Royal Guard:  "Prince, please don't leave the castle."
* When trying to leave.
Royal Guard:  "The area below here is the Zoid hangar. It's dangerous, so please stay out of there."
Royal Guard:  "If you're looking for Lord Earth, he was in the soldier waiting area. As expected of a former Imperial officer, he never neglects his training."

 "Prince."
 "......"
"It's unusual to find you in a place like this."
 "......"
"... Are you skipping class again...?"
 "......"
 "......"
"The king was looking for you. You should go to him."
"Or... would you prefer my intensive training?"
 "......"

Talking To The King

Now that you've spoken to Earth, you can go track down the King. He'll be in the upper right room. (I believe the guard dialogue also changed here after talking to Earth, but I might've just missed this one on the first pass through.)

Royal Guard:   "His Majesty is currently patrolling the castle."
"I believe he might be in his inner chambers at the moment."
"... Come to think of it, he was looking for you earlier, Prince Athle."
King of Arcadia:  "... Athle..."
 Athle: "......"
King of Arcadia:   "How are your studies going?"
"Are you properly following the teachings of the Three Beast Warriors?"
 "......"
King of Arcadia:  "You'll succeed me as king-"
Regina:  "Prince! Where are you!?"
 "......"
 "Prince!!"
"You're skipping out on your studies again and hiding around here, aren't you!?"
 "!!! Y-your Majesty...! I'm so sorry!!"
 "......"

In the Throne Room

"As the prince's tutor, this failure is entirely my responsibility!"
 "I'll accept whatever punishment-"
King of Arcadia:  "It doesn't matter. You're not to blame."
 "But!!"
King of Arcadia:  "I said it's fine. Athle,"
"No, the next King of Arcadia."
"What is your role, exactly? To goof around?"
 "......"
King of Arcadia:  "No. It's to protect the peace of this kingdom, this land."
"And the ancient legacy that lies deep within this castle."
 "It's to protect its secrets."
"... The peace we currently enjoy is only temporary."
"The careful balance of power between the Empire and the Republic. It rests on this delicate balance."
"If either power, or... perhaps, another power..."
"Even the mere appearance of such a thing would shatter that balance."
 "......"
 "......"
 "......"

Enemy Attack!

At this point the conversation is interrupted by bombardments targeting the castle. A Command Wolf Urban Warfare Spec. is used in the first assault.

 "Attack!"

Back Inside the Castle

 "!"
 "!"
 "!"
King of Arcadia:  "! What's going on!!"
Soldier:  "E-Enemy attack! It's a surprise attack!!"
"Give us a report on the current situation!"
Soldier:  "E-Enemies attacking from the south! The castle walls are being breached!!"
"The enemy force is from the Republican Army!!!"
 "! That's impossible!?"
"What's the meaning of this, Jack!"

Back Outside the Castle

Their conversation is interrupted by a second attack, this time from a Red Horn BG.

"Don't let the Republic get the upper hand!"

Back Inside the Castle

Soldier:  "The castle walls have been breached!"
 "What!"
Soldier:  "It's the Imperial Army! They're invading from the North!!!"
 "What!!"
"Even the Imperial Army is attacking!?"
 "Damn it!"
 "Jack, Regina, let's go!!"
King of Arcadia:  "Wait! Three Beast Warriors!!"
 "But-!"
King of Arcadia:  "Take Athle and escape!"
 "!"
 "!"
 "Your Majesty!!"
King of Arcadia:  "Against both the Empire and the Republic... we have no chance of winning this."
"... Their object is the ancient relic..."
"Therefore, Beast Warriors, you must protect the ancient relic as well as Athle!"
Regina, Jack, and Earth:  "Yes sir!"
King of Arcadia:  "... Athle..."
"The Three Beast Warriors have the duty of protecting you, but don't forget that you, as the prince, must also protect the Three Beast Warriors..."
 "......"
King of Arcadia:  "Now, go... Go!! Forgive your father for burdening you with such a difficult task."
 "......"

At the end of this conversation you'll receive the Deck Command "Prince's Encouragement"

王子のはげまし Prince's Encouragement Recovers 25% HP for all allied Zoids

Inside the Castle

 "Prince, hurry to the basement!"
 "......"
 "What's the matter, Prince...?"
 "More enemies?"
 "I don't know."

Back Outside

As we pan back to the outside we get our first look at the main antagonists of the game.

[A man who looks like a knight]
"We only need to surround the castle!"
[A man who looks like the leader]
"First, we must secure the underground area..."
[A man who looks like a knight]
 "!!"

Back Inside The Castle

 "......"
"Who are they? They're from neither the Imperial Army or the Republican Army..."
"Let's save the talking for later."
"Right now, we need to focus on getting out of here as quickly as possible."
 "You're right. Prince, let's go."
 "......"

In The Zoid Hangar

 "......"
 "... These are..."
 "Zoids... but they're quite old."
 "......"
 "Don't be so picky."
 "Anyway, let's take a look..."
 "Sure."

At this point, Jack and Earth go to investigate the Zoids and see if they're in good shape.

"Prince, I've already told you about the Zoid Commander, haven't I?"
 "......"
"I asked you to keep it on you at all times to record your thought patterns, didn't I?"
 "......"
"It's the thing you're wearing on your head!"
"It transmits the prince's thoughts to the Zoid and assists with piloting."
"With this, even with skills like yours, Prince, it should be manageable..."
 "......"
 "Please bear with me, here!"
"This is what happens when you always skip out on class, Athle!"
 "......"

Jack and Earth return from checking out the Zoids.

 "......"
"Now, as for which Zoid the prince will pilot..."
"Should be no problem. They all seem to be in working order."
"Prince, we don't have much time. Please choose one of these Zoids to board."

Choosing a Zoid

At this point, you're tasked with choosing your starter Zoid! There are three options to choose from: The Shield Liger, the Saber Tiger, and the Raynos. Talk to Regina for the Shield Liger, Earth for the Saber Tiger, or Jack for the Raynos. The game doesn't let you go back up the stairs.

Below is a list of stats for each Zoid, for those who don't like to blindly guess based on the vague descriptions. For weapons, AT = Attack, AC = Accuracy, SE = Special Effects, R = Range, DF = Defense, EN = (energy) Consumption, ST = Single Target, Pierce = Targets Zoids lined up left to right (max 2 targets), Wide = Targets enemies lined up side by side (max 3 targets). You can only choose one, so choose carefully.

"This is the Raynos. It's a Zoid designed for high-altitude aerial combat."
"Flying Zoids can't equip weapons other than their fixed armaments, and they're characterized by the fact that weapons without anti-air capabilities have trouble hitting them."
"Would you like to ride this Zoid?"

Every time I've ever played Zoids Saga I chose the Saber or Shield Liger, so this time around I went with the Raynos. Of course, I had missed the bit about not equipping additional weapons, so... here goes nothing!

After you've selected the Zoid you'll get another conversation going.

"... Okay, we should be good. Our Zoids are already loaded."
"The Zoid Commander will help you out with piloting your Zoid."
"So just relax and let's get out of here."

The building starts to shake and the lights start to flicker.

"Ugh! They've already made it this far?!"
"It seems we don't have time to load the remaining Zoids..."
 "Let's go, Prince!"
 "We're waiting your orders, Prince."
 "......"

Underground Ruins - Floor 1 - Section A

There's nothing here, so just head down to the staircase.

Underground Ruins - Floor 1B

When you enter this floor just follow it around to the left. Somewhere along the path you'll find a box containing 4,200 Gold. Over the next bend you'll prompt a conversation.

"... But who were those guys just now?"
 "I don't know. But they're enemies."
"... You're still the same as ever. What do you think, Regina?"
"I've never seen them before either. But more importantly..."
"That's right. First, we need to escape safely and regroup..."
 "And take back the castle!!"
 "......"
 "And the royal legacy..."
"Yeah, the King of Arcadia mentioned something about that. What exactly is the royal legacy?"
"I don't know the specifics either..."
"All I know is that it's in a sealed room somewhere within the castle..."
"We'll find out once we take back the castle."
 "......"
"... Earth is right. There's no point in worrying about it now."
"This is quite a long corridor. How long does it go on for?"
 "We're almost at the exit."
 "......"
 "Just a little further, Prince."
 "......"

Underground Ruins - Floor 1 - Section B

This is a small room. Go ahead and collect the 1,400 gold then head over to the Trinity Liger to trigger a conversation.

 "Is this the Trinity Liger!?"
"Trinity Liger? That's a Zoid I've never heard of before."
"It's said that it's a Zoid created to protect the legacy of Arcadia."
 "However, judging by its condition..."
 "......"
"The Zoid Core is dead... but the looks like the Zi Data is still usable."
 "Zi Data?"
"It's like a blueprint that tells you how to manufacture a Zoid from the Zoid Core."
"It's a technology invented by the Kingdom of Arcadia, and with this data, you don't even need a special military facility."
"You can manufacture Zoids in a private Zoid research institute."
"Of course, you'll need a Zoid Core and some parts... not to mention money."

After the conversation you'll receive the Trinity Liger's Zi Data.

That more or less wraps up the intro to the game! After this you'll move into the overworld for the first time, so we'll continue the game's opening plot there.
