The above concepts show off Byrne's core character design. |
Byrne went through rigorous training to become the pilot of the Empire's latest Zoid, the Gatling Fox. This special ops Zoid was intended to be the lead of a special task force, with Byrne's superiors hinting that he'd be promoted to Commander.
Until then, he single handedly carried out test operations with the Fox. One of their test missions had them intercept the 18th transport unit, which was bringing supplies to a bridge build operation that would've allowed the Republican Army to reach Imperial territory much easier. He and the Gatling Fox destroyed the bridge, delaying their plans significantly. Another operation sent him to a standoff between the Republic and the Empire. Both wanted control of a city of ruins, but with equal numbers, neither could act. However, the Republican Army was waiting on reinforcements. Byrne was tasked with sneaking behind enemy lines using his optical stealth. There, he would attack the Empire's units, making it seem as if the Republic was firing first. This would give the Empire an excuse to attack, and also widen the gap in their power, as Byrne could take down unsuspecting enemies from behind.
However, this mission was compromised when the Gatling Fox began fighting against the Z-O Visor. Determined to regain its free will, the Fox frequently shorted out, or even attacked its own allies. Just as he was supposed to support the Empire from behind, the Fox attacked their own allies instead, and fled the battlefield. Byrne was helpless to stop it as he remained trapped in the cockpit. By the time it finally did stop, they were in the middle of nowhere. Here, Byrne met Dr. Bowman, who explained that the Fox's battle against the Z-O visor was draining its strength. If the visor wasn't removed immediately, the already-weakened Zoid Core would fail, and the Fox would die. Byrne made the tough decision to give up his career in the Empire to run away with the Fox, saving it from its fate.
After becoming a fugitive in the eyes of the Empire, Byrne went traveling with the Fox, allowing his Zoid to choose where they went. This eventually led him to the city near Raps Island, where he met a man expressing his need for a skilled Zoid pilot to help him clear Jaminga out of an archeological site. Byrne was happy to help, but after arriving on the island, he realized that he'd been led into a trap. The man, Ed, had sold him out to the Empire. His fox was defeated twice in its attempts to escape the island, but ultimately saved by Leo's group.
When a forest fire broke out, Byrne was asked by the families of a construction crew that was overseeing work on a nearby dam to bring them home safely. He found them in the forest and escorted them back to safety through drainage tunnels leading to the bottom of the mountain.
