- Chapter 8: A Gathering, a Revival, and a Grand Finale

"What's the plan?"

Tsukamoto asks.

"There isn't one."

Jin has a fearless smile on his face.

"Dare I say, we should break right through the middle."

Tsukamoto lets out a small sigh.

"Is that all you've come up with?"

"Nevermind that."

As I advance my Zoid to the top of the mountain, I open the canopy and look down into the pit of fire. I'm surrounded by all of my friends, who've come to support us.

On the slopes of the caldera, I see countless Bio Zoids waiting for us. However, I can't see She Who Crawls Out from the Depths of the Earth or the "Reaper". Maybe they're lurking in the steam at the bottom of the volcano. From the center of the steam, flames from an eruption rise as a scorching pillar, reaching far into the sky. I can also see many flying Zoids up there. Most of them are flying units that've rushed over from the capital. This time I can fight without worrying about the enemies in the sky. One of them comes down. It's a familiar, and beautiful Zoid. Empressa.

A communication opens.

"Can we go yet?"

Tsukamoto laughs.

"Impatient princess."

"No."

Another communication answers him. Amu's smiling face appears on the screen.

"The princess of Ya Han, Sona Margarita, daughter of his Highness Lichthuchenstein is just not used to being kept waiting."

Where are they? I hold my hand up to block the sunlight, and look out over the army of my allies, trying to find Amu's machine. I find it immediately. The golden Red Horn Bone.

"Medical exam's complete."

I hear a voice. When I turn around, Senka is descending from the Sparkling Beast.

The Sparking Beast was finally able to land on the ground this morning. Seki had jumped in to do a test run. They've been flying around in the sky until just now.

"There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it. Even so, it's amazing that it survived in the magma of the volcano."

Senka has helped me once before, back when Souga was poisoned. She's a Zoid doctor who's very passionate about her research.

"Hey,"

Senka turns to Seki.

"I'd like to learn more, can I dissect it later?"

Maybe she's a little... too enthusiastic about her research.

"Well, um..."

Seki mumbles her words.

"What are you talking about!"

A voice like a cracking bell rings out from above. At the same time, a huge hammer swings down and stops just above the doctor's head.

I turn around and see the cockpit of the Iron Kong open, followed by Masakuni's daring smile.

"You've gotta be kidding me."

"That's right."

The doctor glances at Masakuni.

"You're swinging your hammer at the wrong person."

"Hmm."

Masakuni raises his hammer and looks into the fire.

"Just wait, Bio Zoids."

"Let's go back to the Brastle Tiger, please. Our time to move is approaching."

Senka's assistant, Yu, calls out from the Blitz Pepsis.

"Yes. Let's hurry."

Senka boards the Blitz Pepsis.

"Let's go."

Jin looks at Eika's cockpit, perched on Tobizaru's shoulder.

"Send the signal!"

"Yes sir!"

Ayame, Eika's pilot, answers and closes the canopy. They go soaring into the sky, yelling to the bottom of the fire.

Ooooooohhh.

All at once, the Zoids start charging down the slope.

- Chapter 8: Part 2

Shells fly. Blades shine. A fierce battle has begun. However, all we have to do is follow the path thats been opened up in front of us by our friends.

I received instructions from Jin earlier, saying "Since you have such an important role to play, avoid fighting as much as possible." I'm not really happy with that. The Sparkling Beast is flying just above us;. It'd received instructions, too. Told that "If you fly too high, you'll be targeted."

Bam!

A familiar gunshot echoes.

As I turn around I see a dinosaur-shaped Zoid coming towards us, a gun in its hand. It's the Gunz Raser. A new communication opens.

"Looks like I made it in time."

"Veauregard."

I feel quite nostalgic. Its been a long time since we last saw each other.

"Thank you."

After bowing my head, it suddenly comes to mind.

(Wait-)

When did I start talking like an adult?

"Is the ranch okay?"

"I left it in the hands of youngins. Elderly people seem to be useless around there."

"That's not true. Still, I'm very grateful that you've come."

Veauregard twists the edge of his mouth just slightly.

"You've gotten better at flattery. But I'll only be of so much use."

"Why?"

"Look ahead. It's too dangerous to use projectiles in that fog."

- Chapter 8: Part 3

As the fog first engulfs us it's faint, but gradually growing thicker. Even the image of the Hound Soldier running in front of me disappears sometimes. The sounds of bombardment are falling away, and all I can hear is the roars of the surrounding Zoids, the sound of close-range combat, and the sounds of the eruption. Volcanic bombs occasionally rain down from above, trailing red tails. The center of the eruption must be close by.

"Commander."

The leading Hound Soldier is slowing down.

"I don't have a clear view. I don't know which way to go."

The Hound Soldier has now stopped completely. We stop one after another.

"Hmm."

Jin puts his hand on his chin and thinks.

"Seki, Midori, do you know?"

(I see.)

Suddenly, I feel like I know exactly what I have to do now. This is the limit of what my friends can do to pave the way. There's a limit to Jin's ability to give orders, and for Ken to take the lead. From here on, Seki and I, us sisters, have to lead the way.

"Which way, Midori?"

A communication comes in from Seki.

"Surely, you have a vague feeling indicating the way."

"That's..."

That's right. Something is waiting in the depths of the fog. I know that much...

Suddenly, it occurs to me. I have another person I can ask.

"Souga."

I gently call.

"How do you feel about it?"

Grrrrrrr.

Souga growls. I listen closely, my eyes widen, and I look out over the fog in front of us. Souga stops moving. He's hunkered down and staring at a specific point in the fog.

Roaaaar!

Souga roars. A fierce roar of challenge.

( ( You came. ) )

I hear a voice in my mind. An eerie voice that springs up from the depths of the earth.

"Midori."

Tension is coursing through Seki's face on the screen. I'm sure she's heard the same voice that I have.

( ( Welcome, Shining Beast. Baring the sealing sword, to lock me up again. ) )

"That's right."

Seki's voice answers.

"We've come. To seal you."

( ( You're persistent. Over and over and over and over and over again. I'm tired of this, living at the bottom of the earth. I've had enough, now let me out... ) )

"That's not happening. We'll seal you over and over again. As we've always done, now and in the future."

( ( Such small things. Human beings, they only live for a few decades. ) )

"Even if humans only live for a few decades, we leave behind children, and pass on our knowledge. You will never return to the world again! Midori-"

"Right."

I speak to Souga.

"Do you see, Souga? Where our enemies are?"

Souga nods slowly.

I address Jin.

"Let's go."

Jin nods.

"I have no choice. From here on out, Midori will take the lead. The rest of us will follow directly behind."

"Let's go, Souga."

Roaaaaarrr!

Souga starts to run.

( ( Come, Shining Beast. ) )

I hear the voice spring forth from the depths of the earth.

( ( This will be good. We'll settle the matter. This time, I'll defeat you, and become the ruler of this land. ) )

I answer.

"No. We'll seal you once again. You just wait there."

( ( A strong girl. But first, will you be able to beat the strongest assassin that I've ever raised? ) )

The moment I wonder who that strongest assassin might be, it appears.

Shoom!

A sickle-like claw appears out of the fog. That's...

(The Reaper's claw!?)

I immediately block it with the horn of the helmet.

Clang!

At that moment, something unbelievable happens. The enemy's attack deflects from the horn, and the horn shatters into pieces.

"Huh!? No!"

( ( Now you've seen it, the true strength of my strongest assassin. Do you know how many Zoids I had to feed it to raise it to be this powerful? ) )

I finally understand. Why has this guy always haunted Souga so? Why does he devour Zoid cores? Why is he here now? It was always to defeat Souga, the Shining Beast of our time.

The next attack comes. I block it with the shoulder of the Gusoku armor.

Thud!

The Gusoku's shoulder armor shatters. The enemy's attacks are too fast, and I can only block them. Somewhere behind me I hear the sound of violent clashes. I'm sure the Bio Zoids are attacking my friends.

Clang! Slam!

Souga is reduced to a defensive position. The sword-drawing mechanism on his left shoulder seems to be broken, so I can't grab the sword. Souga curls up in response to the continuous attacks coming from both sides, and brings what remains of the Gusoku armor in front of him, desperately trying to block the attacks. The pieces of Gusoku are destroyed one after another.

(Not good!)

By the time I notice, there's only one piece of Gusoku left to use.

(This is exactly what he's been aiming for.)

I didn't intend to use Gusoku to block every attack. This has been his intention the entire time. His aim was always to break Souga's Gusoku armor. And when Souga loses all of his Gusoku armor, the special attack comes!

Bam!

The last piece shatters and falls.

"Get away from there! Midori!"

Just as I hear the voice, I make Souga jump backwards. The enemy spreads his wings wide. That's when I understand. Every feather on those wings is a missile.

Fwoom!

The missiles all launch at once. A red shadow runs by Souga's side. It's the Rez Tiger.

Ba-ba-ba-boom!

It happens fast. The Rez Tiger is thrown back by all of the missiles. This is Jin's trump card. Another form of the Rez Wolf. It's amazing. Too amazing. Even the Reaper seems stunned for a moment. But the next move is a quick one. Purple claws close in on the Rez Tiger, who's forced to land in an unnatural position and thus loses his balance. The Rez Tiger rolls across the ground to try to avoid it.

Of course, I can't watch. Souga shakes his whole body, throwing off any wreckage from the Gusoku that's still attached to his frame, and grips the sword that has now fallen on the ground in his mouth.

"My song is the sound of slashing, and my dance is the glimmer of a white blade."

The thoughts of the sword become words, and rise in my heart.

"The path we walk is a wicked one, and we'll kill all those who obstruct it."

I jump towards the purple nails.

Clang!

We bounce them back.

Rez Tiger gets up. Souga lands.

"Let's go!"

Jin answers.

"Right!"

Rez Tiger jumps, and so does Souga.

The Rez Tiger's sword swings down from the top.

Clang!

The enemy raises his claw to receive the strike. Souga swings his sword horizontally towards its torso.

"Slash!"

Skreeeeech!

The enemy's body crumbles with a terrible scream.

We land with a thud, and I turn around.

"How is everyone?"

"I don't understand, but..."

"I'm okay."

When I look up, I can see the Sparkling Beast flying through the fog.

"I'm fine, too."

Hebby Rhimos slowly walks forward.

"Just a moment."

It's Ken's voice.

"This one's..."

Clang!

"The last of them."

Graaaaaaahh!

I hear the voice of a demon from within the fog.

Afterwards, the sound of running footsteps, and then Hound Soldier emerges from the fog.

"I've checked out our surroundings. There aren't anymore enemies around here, at least for the time being."

Ken gives his report.

"Good."

Jin nods.

"But..."

Ken's report continues.

"I can hear footsteps. The footsteps of many Bio Zoids running. And what's more, I hear the footsteps of an incredibly large Zoid approaching."

"Hmm."

Jin nods again.

"It looks like it's time for the showdown."

The Rez Wolf, which has returned to its original form, turns around. Pillars of fire from the eruption are just barely visible through the fog from our location. I can hear the footsteps in that direction.

"Let's go."

Jin says quietly.

- Chapter 8: Part 4

After running for a short time, I see a huge black shadow against the background of the pillars of fire. That's the enemy we have to seal. The one from the depths of the earth.

"Midori."

Seki's face is pale from the nervousness.

"Yes."

This morning, when Seki rode the Sparking Beast and I rode Souga, I knew what role we would have to play. I, the roll of the Shining Beast. Her, the roll of the Sparkling Beast. And I knew what we, as sisters, had to do.

It's finally time.

But before that, there are enemies that must be defeated. The myriad of Bio Zoids running towards us.

"Advance—!"

Jin shouts. Rez Wolf howls. The Hound Soldier charges in with his spear at the ready, and the Hebby Rhimos swings its hammer.

"Go, Souga!"

Souga leaps into the middle of the enemies.

- Chapter 8: Part 5

"Hyaaaaaah!"

Ken's enthusiasm is transmitted through the communications.

Thump!

Another Bio Zoid collapses with a horrible scream. Fwoosh, water jets into the air. Perhaps we're already near the bottom of the fire pit. The water on the ground is pooling around Souga's ankles. The fog is getting thicker and thicker.

"Slash!"

Through the fog I can see the glimmer of Kadzuchi, the sword wielded by Jin's Rez Wolf. It swings from right to left.

"Slash!"

The sword swings back the other way, from left to right.

Two Bio Zoids collapse at the same time.

Of course, my Souga isn't defeated just yet. He swings the sword in his mouth to defeat enemies one after another, but there's too many of them.

Rooooaaaaaarrrrrrr.

An eerie voice is constantly calling out from the depths of the earth. According to legend, it's the voice of She Who Crawls Out from the Depths of the Earth.

It's said that when she roars, countless Bio Zoids will appear. It sounds absurd, but when I look at what's happening right in front of my eyes, I might just have to start believing it. No matter how many of them we defeat, new enemies are constantly emerging from the other side of the fog.

Woosh.

An iron ball zooms by. The Hebby Rhimos' hammer. The chain's extending and the enemies up ahead are knocked down. Immediately, we move forward and finish them off with a quick stab.

"There's too many enemies."

It's Rate speaking. She sounds frustrated...

"This isn't working out the way I wanted."

"Don't rush, Rate. Eika's flying around the area establishing contact for us... So even if they can't hear us, our friends who've lost their way in the fog will get here eventually. Until then, we'll just have to do our best."

That's right. We have to do our best.

"Slash!"

The second I cut down an enemy coming from the side, Souga jolts. He looks forward and cocks his head to adjust his ears, then utters a low growl.

Gggrrrrrrr.

I think he's noticed something. I have a bad feeling about that.

"Something's coming."

Almost at the same time, I hear a voice in my head.

( ( Die ) )

An eerie voice springs up from the depths of the earth.

(Even if I run away, I won't escape in time.)

I think. No, perhaps Souga's telling me that.

"Everybody, get down!"

The next moment my vision flashes white. Even in the cockpit, I can feel a tremendous heat passing overhead.

"What is this?"

Ken answers Rate's question.

"It's the heat rays that She Who Crawls Out from the Depths of the Earth fires from her mouth. But, the power is entirely different from what we saw the last time we met her."

"Everyone be careful. There'll be an explosion that follows."

That warning comes from Seki.

The next moment, the ground shakes with the sound of an explosion, so loud that it almost tears my eardrums, and a strong blast hits us from the front. I've seen a lot of artillery explosions, but nothing like this. It feels like the ground and air have all exploded at once.

"Aaah!"

Souga's body is lifted from the ground. We're blown away, spinning across the ground like leaves fluttering in the wind.

"Kyyaaahh!"

"Aaaaaghh!"

I can hear my friends screaming. That's the only proof I have that they're still alive.

We slam into the ground and roll hard. Something catches Souga's body with a firm grasp.

"Are you okay, Midori?"

That voice... Masakuni?

"Ah, yeah, I'm okay."

Though in my head I add a "maybe" to that statement.

"You came."

"Of course. I was worried about you, Midori. Also..."

A fearless smile appears on Masakuni's face.

"The battle of the seal, no matter what, I want to see what it's like. The legendary "Sealing Sword" and the "Shining Beast's Shiro Shouzoku. As a swordsmith, how could I ever go home without seeing them with my own eyes?"

* Shiro Shouzoku = White Clothing.

"Is everyone okay?"

I hear Jin's voice.

"Yes."

"I think so."

"I escaped into the sky."

"Can you see anything from there?"

"It's a miserable sight. Through the fog I can see the bodies of Bio Zoids stacked on top of each other, one after another."

It's a horrible story. To defeat us, she blew up everyone around her, friend or foe.

"Can you see the enemy?"

"Actually..."

Seki frowns.

"I can't see She Who Crawls Out from the Depths of the Earth. I'll send you a video feed."

A new video appears on the communication screen. We see the wreckage of Bio Zoids, all lying in a heap. Also, the pillar of fire from the eruption. That's all we can see, though.

"Hmm."

Jin growls.

"I doubt she ran away."

"The enemy is coming."

A new communication opens. It's Tsukamoto. I can't see them very well because of the fog, but it seems like everyone is getting closer together.

"I can feel it."

I feel it too. Souga growls low.

"But where is it coming from?"

The next moment, the ground rises.

"Waaah!"

"It's the enemy!"

"She's coming from below!"

I can hear my friends screaming. Souga's body is pushed up. His legs are scrabbling, but he can't find his footing.

( ( Die ) )

The ground collapses and Souga is thrown through the air. At that moment, I see the whole image of the enemy that appeared from underground. It's... massive. It's like the earth itself has transformed into a giant Bio Zoid. Sturdy teeth. Sharp claws. A long tail. And the exposed core in its chest gives off a terrifying red light. Its brutal eyes glisten as they turn to Souga. The huge jaws open up and chase after Souga as he's thrown into the air. This creature... It's going to devour Souga whole.

"I won't let that happen!"

I hold my sword to meet her.

Clang!

Souga's sword clashes with the huge fangs. The recoil causes Souga's body to spin through the air. I hear a metal clash as the teeth of the upper and lower jaws clamp shut right in front of Souga. That was close!

Soon the jaws open again, and chase after Souga as he falls to the ground. He lands with a thud and greets them.

Clang!

Another close call. We leap out of the way and then pause, but the enemy is moving fast. The fangs are approaching again in no time.

"Get away from there, Midori!"

A red figure jumps in front of Souga. It's Jin's Rez Tiger.

Clang!

Kadzuchi clashes with the fangs. The next moment, a sharp claw is swung down towards the Rez Tiger.

"But..."

"I'll take care of it."

The Rez Tiger twists around. The huge claws pierce the ground right next to it.

"You have to hurry and prepare the seal."

"Hyaaaah!"

I hear that familiar spirit, then see the Hound Solder rushing in from the corner of my vision with its lance drawn.

"Midori-"

It's Seki. The Sparkling Beast is coming down.

(Right. It's the only way.)

I have no choice but to leave this to my friends. Even if I keep on fighting like this, we can't defeat this enemy.

I turn my back on the battle and run with Souga towards the Sparkling Beast as it flies down from the sky.

"Hiyaaaaaahh!"

Masakuni roars.

"Let's go!"

Rate says. The Iron Kong, Hebby Rhimos, and Tobizaru, along with the rest of our friends rush in one after another.

(I have to hurry.)

At this rate, everyone's going to be killed. No matter how strong they are, it's impossible to defeat this opponent. There's only one way to handle She Who Crawls Out from the Depths of the Earth. To seal her using the sword.

The Sparkling Beast begins to change over my head. Both wings are aligned straight back and transform into a shimmering blade.

"Woah! What—"

Masakuni mutters.

"The Sealing Sword is the Sparkling Beast itself!"

The Sparkling Beast can no longer fly, as it's now in the form of the Sealing Sword. It glides and spins through the air, slowly descending towards Souga. I run, and adjust Souga's speed to match the Sparkling Beast.

The hilt of the Sealing Sword comes down just above Souga's head. The cockpit of the Sparkling Beast is now right above Souga's.

"Now, Midori."

"Jump, Souga!"

Souga jumps. He grabs the hilt of the Sealing Sword firmly in his jaws. At that moment, Souga himself changes. I can feel the difference in my heart. Now, surrounded by a shining light, Souga is transformed. From the Liger Blue Souga that I've been accustomed to since childhood, to the legendary Shining Beast!

"I saw it!"

Masakuni shouts.

"I saw it! With my own eyes! The legendary Shiro Shouzoku of the Shining Beast, the shining figure of the Shining Beast with the Sealing Sword in its mouth!"

As I land and turn around, I see a fierce battle. My rushing companions are blown back, smashed about, and struck down. Still, each and every one of them stands back up and heads back for the enemy.

"Everyone, move away!"

I scream.

"Leave the rest to me!"

The eyes of She Who Crawls Out from the Depths of the Earth turn to Souga. Her jaws open wide. She's preparing to spit more heat rays.

"The time for the seal has come."

The words come naturally to my mind.

"Proceed, Shining Beast!"

Souga runs, facing off against the huge enemy.

( ( Die ) )

The heat rays are fired at Souga. My field of vision flashes pure white, but Souga doesn't dodge. He continues running straight ahead, and takes the hit from the heat rays head on. I close my eyes tightly.

There's an intense light. A tremendous amount of heat. I can feel it, even with my eyes closed. However, Souga runs straight towards the enemy. Eventually the light subsides, and I slowly open my eyes again.

(We're still alive-)

This is the true value of the Shining Beast when paired with the Sealing Sword. Even the tremendous heat waves are rebounded, and Souga charges straight for the enemy.

"That's it. Advance, Shining Beast."

I hear Masakuni's voice.

"The image of the dazzling white beast, with the Sealing Sword held in its jaws, charging ahead. Everything is as the legend said."

"Go!"

I hear Jin's voice.

"Go!"

And Ken's voice.

"Gooo!"

I hear Rate's voice.

"Go!" "Go!" "Go!"

I hear everyone's voices.

We're nearing the enemy.

"Midori."

"Right."

I have Souga jump. He grips the Sealing Sword in his jaws, and swings it straight down.

Clang!

The enemy receives the strike with her claws and staggers backwards.

It's not just Souga's power at play here. Nor is it just the Sealing Sword. This is a power that can only be exerted when two riders and two Zoids become one.

Now we swing the sword sideways.

Clang! Clang!

The enemy retreats backwards.

"Go!" "Go!"

I can hear everyone's voices.

"Go!" "Go!" "Go!" "Go!"

The pillars of fire are close by. We're almost there.

"Go!"

"Let's go!"

Our two voices overlap. I hold the Sealing Sword straight, and Souga lunges. Right towards the wide open mouth of our enemy.

"GRRRAAAAAHHHH!"

With a terrible scream, the enemy falls into the crater, with the Sealing Sword jammed into the back of its throat.

"Sis!"

I take off my harness and stand up, opening the canopy. I should be feeling some greater enthusiasm, but that's just not the case.

The canopy of the Sealing Sword opens, and I see my sister.

"Hurry!"

I reach out with both hands. My sister kicks off of the floor and jumps out of the cockpit.

"Sis!"

"Midori!"

I grab my sister's arm and pull her into Souga's cockpit. The moment we hug each other and fall to the floor, Souga closes the canopy.

The three Zoids-She Who Crawls Out from the Depths of the Earth, the Sealing Sword, and the Shining Beast, all fall into the magma as a single mass.

"Souga!"

Souga relases the Sealing Sword from his mouth. After watching She Who Crawls Out from the Depths of the Earth sink into the magma with the Sealing Sword still stuck in her throat, Souga swims out of the sea of magma.

- Chapter 8: Part 6

When we crawl out of the sea of magma, my friends are all there waiting for me. There's no enemies left in this area, since She Who Crawls Out from the Depths of the Earth spit her heat rays without ever distinguishing between friend or foe. Everyone is watching me anxiously.

Souga shakes and rolls to sift the magma off of his surface.

"Are you two safe?"

Jin asks. Me and my sister look at each other, and I decide to answer on her behalf.

"Yes, the seal was successful."

"You did it!"

I hear Ken.

"Good job!"

"Success!"

Joyful voices rise up from all around.

Roooooaaaaaarrrrr.

Souga roars into the sky. His fellow Zoids all raise their voices at once. Those voices echo off of the slopes of the crater, echoing high into the sky. Again, and again, and again, and again.

"I'm so glad."

When the victorious roars all settle down, I hear a familiar voice.

"Huh?"

Ken's complexion pales.

I search for the familiar face in all of the open communication screens.

"I admit, it was worth it for me to follow you, Ken."

There she is! Shion, the daughter of the Mayor from Enya!

"Now that you've completed your duties, Ken, you can accompany me back to Enya."

"Oh, uh, that's..."

For a long time Ken just has an embarrassed look on his face, but before long, he seems to come to a decision, and he tightens his expression and gives a firm answer.

"I can't. I'm still training, and my mission isn't over."

"That's right."

Rate weighs in.

"Sealing the source doesn't mean that the Bio Zoids that've already appeared are gone. It's our job to keep them from escaping from this crater. Even if there aren't any around here, there are still countless Bio Zoids in the crater itself."

"That's right."

Jin nods.

"It's too early to relax. Our work isn't over yet."

Rez Wolf turns to the center of the crater.

"Our immediate mission is to escape from this crater safely."

"Yes."

Ken answers.

"Agreed."

I answer and pull myself together.

"Mmhmm."

Masakuni nods.

"Fiiine."

Shion... reluctantly... answers.

"Let's go."

Rez Wolf starts running. Then Hound Soldier, followed by Hebby Rhimos.

"Come on, let's go too."

When I turn around, I see my sister's smile.

"Let's go. First, let's go back to Kageri Village and report to Hakukuu, then let's go to the capital together."

"Yeah."

"But first of all..."

My sister imitates Jin's tone.
