- C7: A Heat Ray, a Message, and a Grand Evolution
(That's... a Bio Zoid?)
I can't believe what I'm seeing with my own eyes.
Indeed, it looks like a Bio Zoid. The creepy figure, the unique body color, the brutally glowing eyes. All the same as the Bio Zoids I've encountered and fought thus far. But the size is way too different. This is... insanely big.
I remember the Shining Beast that I saw in a fantasy at the temple. That was definitely a Zoid I had never seen before. This one is standing right in front of me, though. Or, is it also an illusion?
I may have been stunned for a while. Until I hear Ken muttering, that is, then I snap out of it.
"Could that... possibly be..."
When I turn to the screen, I see that Ken's face also looks stunned. Maybe it's the same look that I had.
"What? Ken, do you know something?"
"It's possible that this is "She Who Crawls Out From the Depths of the Earth" that I've heard mentioned in legends. If so..."
"And what if it is?"
Ken's face grows tense. He opens his eyes and stares at our enemy.
"Then we can't let it leave the crater!"
The Hound Soldier dashes. I also have Souga run after him.
"What do you mean?"
When I ask, Ken mutters a quiet song.
"When it crawls out from the beneath the earth and roams the land, it gives rise to a great disaster. It tramples anything beneath its feet, and burns everything with its flames. By one week, not one living person remains."
The cold eyes of the enemy turn towards us. Its huge jaws open.
"Jump, Midori!"
Ken shouts. We jump. Hound Soldier on the right, and Souga on the left.
Fwoom!
The heat rays emitted by the enemy pass right between Souga's shoulder and the Hound Soldier's. There's a momentary difference in temperature. Even if we didn't take a direct hit, I can still feel the heat through the cockpit.
"But how terrible it is, that roaring voice."
Ken resumes his singing words. Maybe this is part of the ancient tradition.
"When that voice resonates, an endless number of evil things shall appear and cover the earth."
Hound Soldier, who lands with a thud, immediately starts running towards the enemy.
"Evil things?"
I also land and launch Souga forward. The huge enemy appears before us as it approaches.
"That's right. In other words, the Bio Zoids."
"Does that include this one?"
"Yes. This is..."
The enemy looks at the Hound Soldier, then at Souga. It may be wondering which one to attack. Ken clears the momentary gap.
"The root of disaster!"
The Hound Soldier jumps forward with the spears. Souga jumps in with a moment's delay.
Clang!
The Hound Soldier's hit by the enemy's claws, and thrown backwards.
"Ken!"
"I'm fine. Attack!"
Thanks to Ken, the enemy's stance is broken. I slash at the tip of its nose.
"Slash!"
There's a definite response.
"We did it!"
The moment I think that, there's a powerful counterattack.
Crash!
We're hit with an intense shock, and for a moment, it feels almost as if I'm losing consciousness.
The landscape turns round and round. Souga, who was thrown back from the enemy is still spinning.
Souga twists in the air. Somehow, he manages to land on his feet.
Thud.
I'm choked up by the shock.
"Ugh..."
The sound escapes my mouth. Souga... seems okay. I'm sure that his reflexes allowed him to react well to the enemy's attack... At least I think so.
Where we've landed is surrounded by fire. For the first time, I can see the magnificient landscape of the summit. There's a huge, fiery opening at the top. There's a mortar-shaped hole, and steep slopes. The bottom looks foggy, so I can't see it very well.
There's no enemies here, though...
"That can't be! I cut it with the Metal Zi sword."
There's just nothing that can withstand that. Not among the Bio Zoids I've encountered so far.
"So, this is really how it is."
Ken mutters.
"What do you mean?"
"If the legend is correct, then we can't beat this guy..."
If that's true, then how do we get rid of it?
"Midori, Ken, leave this place."
A communication comes in from Jin.
"Start the bombardment."
I hear the sound of fire. I turn and see countless missiles. I flee with Souga along the edge of the fire.
Bo-bo-bo-boom!
The explosions sound and the ground shakes. The enemy's figure recedes, fading into the flashes and smoke. Even so, if you're firing upon a target that can't be defeated with Metal Zi...
"How's it going?"
Ken answers Jin's call.
"It's working well. The enemy rolled down the slope."
I see. Jin's bombardment isn't trying to defeat the enemy, but rather destroying the ground at the enemy's feet to drop them into the bottom of the crater.
"Graaaaaaaaaaarrrrrr!"
There's an eerie, echoing voice. I have a bad feeling about this. The legends that we heard about earlier mentioned that when we heard this roar, Bio Zoids would appear.
"Skree! Skree!"
"What is that?"
Räte answers my question.
"Oh, your sister will explain."
When I turn around, the Rez Wolf and Hebby Rhimos are on the edge of the crater.
"That's the Bio Ptera, and Bio Raptor Gui. They're a group of Bio Zoids that can fly in the sky."
Their altitude increases as they approach us, watching.
"What do we do, Commander?"
Ken's voice also sounds tense.
Jin answers the question with a question.
"How's it going, Seki? Do you think it's here?"
Seki looks like she's meditating with her eyes closed.
"Yes. I'm sure that it's here. I can feel it!"
"What?"
When I ask, Seki opens her eyes and turns to me.
"Listen from your heart. You should hear it too."
I try to imitate Seki's gestures and close my eyes. When I sharpen my mind... I hear it. Something is calling. From the mist at the bottom of the crater, calling for me and Souga.
Roooaaaaaarrrrr.
Souga roars to the sky.
Screeeeeeech!
Something answers. From the bottom of the crater.
The ground shakes. It's a continuous sway that feels different from the quakes of the bombardment. I can also hear a low sound, like a rumble.
When I open my eyes, I see Seki on the screen.
"So that's..."
Seki nods.
"It's calling to us. The Sparkling Beast."
"All right."
Jin makes a decision.
"We're going to push our way into the crater. Räte."
"Yup, yup!"
"Handle the enemies in the sky, please."
"Absolutely! Just leave it to Räte."
The Hebby Rhimos shakes its head. A chain extends and the iron ball begins to spin.
But what's it going to do? Sure, I've seen the Hebby Rhimos swinging that iron ball around plenty of times while fighting, but I don't think it can reach the enemies in the sky... but apparently that's not the case. As I'm watching it, the chain stretches. 10 meters. 20 meters, and it's still going.
Hebby Rhimos makes a subtle change in how it's swinging its neck. The chain whips and the iron ball goes flying into the sky. I see, she might be able to fight the enemies in the sky after all.
The iron ball circles around in the sky then falls towards the ground. The Hebby Rhimos skillfully swings its head to manipulate the chain. Just as the iron ball is about to hit the ground, it rises with a whoosh.
"That's amazing."
Räte smiles when she hears me say that.
"I'll show you. A number of secret hammer techniques used by the Hebby Rhimos. Let's go."
Hebby Rhimos begins to descend the slope. The enemy has already risen up to eye level. I'm annoyed by the sounds of the skrees above.
"Don't stray too far from me, keep up."
I push Souga forward, falling just behind the Hebby Rhimos.
Hebby Rhimos is descending. The Bio Zoids are rising. The battle begins when the enemy is right above us.
Skreeee!
The enemies all descend at once.
"That's it!"
Hebby Rhimos whips the chain with force. The chain stretches and the iron ball flies towards the enemies in the sky.
"Secret technique, surprise the enemy by suddenly extending the chain!!"
I don't know about the secret technique theme for the name, but it seems to have done the trick. They scramble to avoid it, but can't make it in time.
Boom!
The iron ball shatters the wings of the Bio Ptera. The iron ball continues to fly towards the next enemy.
Crash!
The neck of the Bio Raptor Gui is broken.
Thud!
It makes direct contact with another Bio Ptera's body.
"Secret technique, three birds with one stone!"
The Bio Ptera crashes near Souga. Even though it's now crashed, it's still just damaged and unable to fly. I jump on it with Souga and impale it with the sword.
Boom.
The iron ball, having lost its speed after hitting three targets, falls to the ground.
"Secret technique, rewind the chain and regain momentum!"
She pulls the chain of the iron ball and swings it around. Aside from that, is this really a secret technique? Could it be that Räte's just saying whatever comes to mind?
The enemies, who see the iron ball being reeled back in, regain their composure and attack.
Skree! Skreee!
Jin and Ken fight back with artillery. Räte swings the iron ball around to gain momentum.
"But what should we do?"
Räte asks.
"There's so many enemies that it'll be hard to defeat them all."
Jin answers.
"Hurry ahead. If we can't find the Sparkling Beast, we can't seal them."
"Right. Moving forward!"
Boom.
I hear the steel ball make a loud sound as it flies through the sky. My eyes follow it, and my heart freezes.
"That's..."
Its body is extraordinarily large and it has a brutal appearance, with extremely long claws, and the color of those claws are... black and purple. I understand immediately. It's the same Bio Zoid that attacked Souga with its poisonous claws before.
"Yup, yup. That's right. It's like the Bio Zoid that we saw somewhere before."
Räte also notices.
"But why is it flying in the sky?"
Seki answers.
"Maybe this is the evolution of Bio Zoids."
This one guy, I can't forgive. I absolutely have to defeat him.
"Can you target it?"
"Well, let me try. Secret technique, aiming for prey!"
Räte delicately manipulates the chain. The iron ball is flying the entire time...
Boom!
It hits the wings. The enemy flies off balance and falls.
"Go, Souga."
I run down the slope towards the point of the crash. The enemy's eyes are already turned towards us. Those brutal eyes. Maybe it still remembers Souga?
The enemy flaps its wings and jumps into the air, regaining its position. Apparently, the wings aren't that badly damaged. But, its altitude is low enough.
"Jump, Souga!"
Souga jumps. The enemy holds his claws out to meet him.
"Slash!"
We swing down on him with the sword. The enemy strikes it aside with their claws.
Clang!
The sword and the claws clash, and sparks scatter. Souga and the enemy fly through the air.
"One more time."
When I land with a thud, I try to jump, but I hear Räte's voice.
"Woah-woah-woah-woah!"
"Aaaahhhh!"
That's Seki's scream.
When I turn around the... Hebby Rhimos is flying in the sky?
"Huh? What? What happened?"
"This is the Secret Technique: Asuka Entanglement... and totally not that the chain seems to have gotten tangled up with the enemy."
When I look up, there's a Bio Ptera flapping its wings and struggling to carry the Hebby Rhimos. The Bio Ptera seems to be trying to remove the chain, but it only gets more and more entangled.
"Quickly, release the chain!"
Jin's voice rings out. Rez Wolf and Hound Soldier are chasing after them.
"If your altitude keeps climbing like this, it'll be bad."
(I have to do something!)
Seki... she's my precious sister... and she's riding in the Hebby Rhimos. Not that Räte doesn't matter.
I run up the hill while visually checking the Hebby Rhimos' altitude.
"Wait! Go now!"
Jump!
Somehow, my front leg gets caught in the Hebby Rhimos. We climb over the Hebby Rhimos and jump again towards the Bio Ptera!
"Slash!"
We slash and destroy th Bio Ptera.
Skreeeee!
The body of the Bio Ptera crumbles, and we fall.
"Waaaa!"
"Kyaaaa!"
I can hear the tragic tone to Räte and Seki's voices. Souga twists in the air.
There's a thud, and a shock. I try to twist his legs to land upright... but it's impossible. We lose balance and roll down the slope.
We've rolled maybe ten times now? Eventually, we hit something and stop. When I look over, it's the Hebby Rhimos that Souga bumped into. It looks like he was rolling around like Souga was. Rez Wolf and Hound Soldier are running down from above us. Their speed is too high for them to brake now. They both roll into us with a boom and we all end up in a pile together.
"Are you all safe?"
Jin asks.
"Yes."
For now, I answer yes. I think we're probably safe. I also hear the same response from Ken and Räte. Everyone seems safe.
When I try to stand up, the ground begins to shake. I've experienced earth quakes several times now, but I've never felt an earthquake that lasted so long.
"The enemy is coming."
I look around. From the top of the slope, the flight-type Bio Zoids from before are just showing up. From the bottom, countless Bio Zoids are running up towards us.
"Where do we go?"
"Umm..."
Jin thinks for a moment.
"This is a big problem, but what about that shaking...?"
At that moment, the ground violently shakes with a defeaning roar.
"It's an eruption!"
When I turn around, a huge pillar of fire is climbing from the bottom of the crater, and reaching towards the sky. Within it, I can see the figure of an elegantly dancing bird.
"We finally meet."
Seki whispers.
Somehow, I understand. That's the illusion that I saw in front of the temple.
"Might that be?"
"Yes. The Sparkling Beast."
- Chapter 7: Part 2
"Is that the Sparkling Beast?"Jin's question serves as a reminder.
"Surely it has to be?"
"Yes."
Seki nods.
"I hear its voice. The voice that calls to me."
"Can you guide it?"
"I'll try."
Hebby Rhimos' canopy opens. Seki stands up.
"Sparkling Beast, Sparkling Beast, I've finally met you."
Seki speaks to him in a singing voice. Ignoring the heat of the eruption and the flying volcanic bullets.
"Sparkling Beast, Sparkling Beast, I'm here."
"By the way..."
Räte says over the intercom.
"Something else seems to be coming from the bottom."
I take a look at Seki, who's talking to the Sparkling Beast, and look around. I see the enormous enemy that we fought earlier, the one that Ken called "She Who Crawls Out from the Depths of the Earth". The Bio Zoid retreats while being enshrouded by innumerable Bio Zoids that spring forth from the bottom of the crater. Another group of Bio Zoids are running towards us, replacing it. Among them, there's one highly unusual shape
"Is... that... the Bio Spino!?"
Ken mutters.
"Yes, it is."
Räte takes on her typical commentary tone.
"A terrifying Bio Zoid that emits electromagnetic waves, which disrupts all Zoids. The Zoids that are bathed in those electromagnetic waves become stuck, and you can only wait for them to be brought down."
I've heard about it from Seki, but this is the first time I've seen it.
"But..."
Ken argues.
"If the Bio Spino emits its electromagnetic waves, the Bio Zoids around it will be stuck too, right?"
"I think so. It doesn't seem to be emitting the electromagnetic waves now. But if we get closer, and we're engaged in combat, it'll definitely use them."
"Mmm, that's right."
Jin interjects.
"Only I can fight him. Midori, Ken."
"Yes!"
"Yes!"
"Right now the Hebby Rhimos can't move. Stay here and protect it."
"What about you, Commander?"
"I'm going to take this guy on."
Rez Wolf starts running.
My Souga and Ken's Hound Soldier stand beside the Hebby Rhimos. The surrounding area is full of Bio Zoids, but they don't seem to be coming near us. Perhaps the Bio Zoids are afraid to get near the Bio Spino.
"Sparkling Beast, Sparkling Beast, I'm here. I've finally arrived. Guided by an eternal bond..."
Seki's call continues. The Sparkling Beast is making a wide turn in the sky. It's looking at something on the ground... probably Seki...
- Chapter 7: Part 3
The gap between the Rez Wolf and the enemy is blocked off. The second I think the battle is about to begin, the Rez Wolf disappears."Huh?"
I'm astounded. It hadn't really disappeared, it was only an illusion. The Rez Wolf suddenly starts moving at tremendous speed. It leaps on the enemy and swings its claws.
Bam!
The claws tear away at the enemy's body. Rez Wolf lands and twists its body around. It moves towards the next enemy from that crouching position, and destroys it by swinging the sword upwards into its underside.
Clang!
"It appeared, the Commander's trump card."
Ken mutters.
"Huh? What?"
"Oh, that's right. You've never seen it before Midori. This is the Rez Tiger."
"What's that...?"
"Look at it. The Rez Wolf's shape is changing."
Even if that's the case, I can't really tell because it's moving too fast.
Rez Wolf jumps at the next enemy and swings his front leg up. Then, at that moment—
"Huh?"
The Rez Wolf's claws have grown a little... At least it looks like it.
Clang!
The enemy's head is torn off by the strike. Overcoming the enemy's fallen body, the Rez Wolf continues forward. Its body also looks different than usual. The normal Rez Wolf always felt smart and fearless, but now it's more robust.
It seems like the Rez Wolf is jumping on the next enemy and passing right through its body. In reality, he's biting through the enemy's torso, then passing between the two remaining halves. When I look at his jaw, I see an obvious difference. It now has big jaws and thick fangs.
"What's that?"
Ken tells me.
"That's the Rez Tiger."
"Rez Tiger?"
"Yes. It's another form of the Rez Wolf, the Rez Tiger."
Not just the build. Its attitude is also different from usual. It's a fierce sight to behold.
Bang!
It swings its front leg down, knocks the enemy to the ground, and jumps over it. Rez Tiger is charging straight for the Bio Spino, defeating its enemies one after another.
"Wow. But, why..."
Ken answers before I can ask him the question.
"Why doesn't he always use that form? Because it's exhausting to use. It won't last for long."
"Then that means..."
"If he can't maintain that form long enough to defeat the Bio Spino and escape from the swarm of enemies, he'll be in serious danger."
"You've arrived!"
Seki shouts. When I look up, the Sparkling Beast is flying right towards us.
"Well done."
Jin says in a communication, having heard Seki's voice through the same method.
Bang!
The Rez Tiger's front legs slam into and knock over a Bio Zoid.
"It's going to guide us out of the crater."
Thud!
Rez Tiger bares its fangs and plunges them into the enmy. Despite the fierce battle going on, Jin's instructions are calm and collected. Jin is, after all, amazing.
"Yes!"
After Seki waves her arm over her head, she turns her arm and points in our direction. The Sparkling Beast flaps its wings and passes over her head. Seki sits down in her seat, and the Hebby Rhimos' canopy closes.
"That was a successful meeting. The Sparkling Beast is going to leave the crater, then descend to the foot of the mountain."
Seki reports. Jin answers.
"Roger that. There's still more to do here."
Rez Tiger approaches the Bio Spino.
Rooaaaaarrr!
The Bio Spino screams. The Rez Tiger stops moving. The Bio Zoids around them are also stopped. Bio Spino has activated its electromagnetic waves. In this frozen scene, the Bio Spino bares its fangs and approaches the Rez Tiger.
Crackle-crackle-crackle-
It's the sound of the Rez Tiger's body as it's enveloped in a flash of light.
"Huh? What? What happened?"
Seki answers in a calm voice.
"It's a discharge. Using equipment that was specifically devised based on the experience gained from their last encounter. It discharges around the body, blocking the electromagnetic waves."
The Rez Tiger's movement returns. It swings a single paw to deflect the enemy's fangs.
Clang!
While jumping up from below, its fangs seize the enemy's throat.
Thud!
The enemy, with its throat crushed by the fangs, rolls almost onto its back. He grips the sword as he descends on it.
"Have a strike from my sword, Kadzuchi!"
Jin's fighting spirit is conveyed through the transmission.
"Slash!"
The sword swings down.
Grrraaaahhhhhh!
The Bio Spino's body collapses. The Rez Tiger lands behind it. The Bio Zoids that've all regained their mobility all flock towards the Rez Tiger at the same time.
"Escape from the crater."
Jin gives the command.
"Go!"
"Yes!
We turn back towards our original direction. The Bio Zoids who've seen the Bio Spino fall are heading towards us.
"Let's go, Midori."
"Right."
Souga and Hound Soldier start running. Immediately afterwards, the Hebby Rhimos is following, and begins firing.
"But where's Jin?"
It worries me a little to leave someone behind alone.
Ken laughs as he grins.
"The Commander is fine. Instead, we should be doing our part."
"All right."
Boom!
The heavy shells fired by the Hebby Rhimos explode. The enemies approach. The Hound Soldier suddenly ducks down.
"Let's go!"
The Hound Solder plunges straight into them. It's defeating enemies with the left spear.
Thump!
Shyaaaaaa!
At the same time, the right spear is thrust into another enemy.
Thud!
The Metal Zi is only attached to the left spear, so the right one isn't causing any fatal injuries, but it's enough to knock down their enemies. The left and right spears, the head, the claws, and the fangs, are weapons being cast upon the targets one after another to open a pathway. The enemies' efforts are completely useless.
Honestly, I think it's amazing. Its been a long time since we started traveling together, but I can clearly see that Ken has been training his armaments the entire time. Will Ken get even stronger in the future? I don't want to lose Ken, though.
The enemy is approaching from the front. I run and grip my sword.
"My song is the sound of slashing, and my dance is the glimmer of a white blade."
The thoughts of the sword become words, and rise in my heart.
"The path we walk is a wicked one, and we'll kill all those who obstruct it."
"Slash!"
We defeat the enemy with a single strike.
"Next!"
I quickly look around and identify the path that Souga is heading for, and the enemies that we must defeat next.
Hoooooowwwwwlllll!
I hear the voice of the Rez Wolf.
When I look behind us, I see the Rez Wolf running back in his normal appearance.
(Yes! Jin seems to be safe!)
I'm feeling 100 times more courageous. We leap towards the next enemy.
"Slash!"
The enemy lets out a death scream.
"Next!"
I run with Souga. He roars at the group of enemies ahead.
ROOOAAAARRRR!
- Chapter 7: Part 4
When I look up at the night, I can see another object glowing alongside the moon in the center of the sky."It hasn't come down yet?"
Seki quietly answers my question.
"That's right, it's still glowing."
The body of the Sparkling Beast is just like a coal fire, and its whole body is glowing red. The explanation that Seki gave me was that its body temperature was hundreds of degrees, so if it came down to the ground, it would start a forest fire...
We camp in the forest at the foot of the volcano.
The Bio Zoids never followed us after we escaped from the crater. Now, apart from the sounds of the eruption that we can hear every now and again, a clear silence surrounds us. Jin and Ken, who are usually hard at work after their training, seem tired today. They're resting with us beside the bonfire.
"Heh."
Räte also looks up at the sky.
"It's not getting cold."
"It has a large body, so it probably won't cool down enough until morning."
"Has it been in the magma of that volcano for a long time?"
"What do you mean?"
"I wonder if its been waiting in the magma for a long time."
Räte looks down and turns to Seki.
"You're going, then."
Seki lets out a small sigh.
"Yes... maybe so."
I turn my eyes to Souga. Souga... the Shining Beast of this generation... is now resting quietly.
The Shining Beast, and the Sparkling Beast. Two sealed Zoids. The two sealed Zoids were now complete. The riders are Seki... my sister... and myself... I remember the story that I heard at the temple in the Cursed Forest.
(Two went out, but only one of them returned.)
I wonder how difficult this role must be. I don't want anyone to not return home. She's my sister, who I've finally met during my 16th year. What should we accomplish? How can we both come back, together?
When I look at Souga, I notice the wound on his forehead. I remember those unpleasant things. I turn my eyes towards the mountain. He's... the one who gave this wound to Souga... and he's in this mountain.
(The Reaper.)
That's the name that comes to mind. It's a good name for him.
We can't let this guy go. We absolutely have to defeat him by our own hand.
The wind kicks up. I hear a low voice as the flames of the bonfire flicker slightly.
"Is that the Shining Beast?"
When I turn around, Tsukamoto is there. The Shinobi who's been our contact with the capital. No one noticed that he was approaching.
Jin speaks up.
"Right."
"What's the Sealed Sword?"
"I still don't know, but..."
Jin looks at Seki. Seki quietly nods and speaks up.
"According to legend, when a hero rides the two beasts, the path will be revealed."
"We have all of the key actors. For when the decisive battle happens, I mean..."
Jin asks a question this time.
"So it's the beginning of the end?"
"I sent Eika to make contact, and they've just returned. Support units are heading this way, one after another. The earliest ones will arrive tonight."
"Thank you for getting so much support..."
Jin looks at the volcano.
"It'll be too bad if they don't make it in time."
After a little thought, he makes a decision.
"We'll re-enter the crater of the volcano tomorrow at noon."
"Okay, let's go tell everyone."
Tsukamoto disappears into the darkness. When I look around, I spot Tsukamoto's Zoid, Tobizaru, nearby. A bird-shaped Zoid flies from its shoulder. That must be Eika.
Jin observes the same thing.
"As you heard, Tsukamoto will be watching over us tonight, so please get some rest."
"All right."
Ken gets up.
"Then I'll go take a look around before going to bed."
"M-Me too."
I also stand up.
Tsukamoto is there, so I don't think it'll be necessary to look around. But having something to do is calming to me. I think Ken feels the same way.
As I walk towards Souga, I suddenly think. This could be the last time I'll ever run in the forest at night with Ken. There's no guarantee that neither Ken nor I will survive tomorrow night.
I shake my head to get rid of that thought.
"That wont happen, will it?"
I look up at Souga as I walk.
"We'll do everything in our power to prevent that from happening, right, Souga?"
Souga slowly nods... I feel like.
- Rez Tiger
