The Arrival of Earthlings
- The Crash of the Globally III
- An Immigration Ship from Earth
Having spread its sphere of existence to all regions in the Solar System, mankind sent probes (scout ships) to other stars and to the symmetrical region of the galaxy, searching for mankind's future possibilities. A united government was born within the Solar System, and as an investment in mankind's future, the "Deep Space Pioneer Foundation" was established with the objective of probing unknown regions of space, and a large-scale deep space investigation project was put into practice. It was a grand journey that would take 18 years of acceleration, 220 years of stable cruising and 12 years of deceleration, even using an advanced spaceship.
As it neared its destination, the deceleration ended, and the time came for the 200 crew members in cryo-hibernation to awaken. Human cryo-hibernation technology was developed in the 20th century, but the technology to prevent cells from crystallising when thawing was eventually developed in the 21st century.
When they had breathed in the ship's sterile oxygen for the first time in 220 years, the flight computer scanned a solar system on their course. With a precision that seemed almost miraculous, the sensoring system imaged one of its planets, the second planet, and projected it on the main screen. One of the 200 crew members murmured. "......It's Earth!" Yes, the planet's colour and appearance were the spitting image of Earth. A cheer rose among the crew!
However, they did not yet know the chequered fate that awaited them......
- The Globally III
The first step of the space emigration program was the Globally I project. A huge unmanned deep-space ship was constructed and would investigate the galactic centre, cruising at 15% of the speed of light through nuclear fusion pulse propulsion. Ultimately, a manned investigation ship using antimatter annihilation propulsion, the Globally III, departed for the symmetrical region of the galaxy. This occurred 30 years after the departure of the Globally I, but science had progressed at an accelerating rate, so although the I and II had departed first, the III overtook these two spaceships with acceleration far surpassing theirs, and arrived at its destination, the galaxy's symmetrical region, long before the I reached the galaxy's central region.
- A Mutiny and Crash-Landing
For mankind, the galaxy's symmetrical region had been an unknown territory for a long time. The second planet, with three small satellites and blue seas spread across it, was certainly quite a similar planet to mother Earth. The crew members approached this planet to carry out investigations and turn it into a new strongpoint for humanity if possible, but the flight computer objected to this and advised the investigation of a different solar system 200 parsecs further ahead. As a result of discussion among the captain and course-setting crew, they respected the computer's opinion. However, there were some who opposed this. They were a group of industrialists who had been removed from the list of leaders when the Solar System government was founded. This group of super-giant industrialists had controlled the world from the shadows for a long time, through the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, but were now ridiculed as Venture Merchants and ghosts of a previous era. They were a greedy lot that even treated space development as a business. They dreamed of creating their own kingdom in another solar system before anyone realised, and were truly ghosts of an old era.
Upon learning that this blue planet had seas, an atmosphere, and signs of life, they carried out a forced landing on the planet. Crew members who were tired of the long journey backed their rebellion, and 60 of them stole escape shuttles and left the mothership. But as a result of shootouts on board, the annihilation engine of the mothership Globally III was damaged, the antimatter being controlled by magnetic fields was released, and the ship suffered fatal damage.
The onboard system unification computer continually declared an emergency situation, and began to order all crew members to escape. Summoning the last of its power, the flight computer jettisoned the out-of-control engine into space and enveloped the hull in a resin ballute for atmospheric entry, then desperately continued to control the hull balance as the ship became a bright red fireball and fell onto the planet.
The majority of the hull was burned away when it entered the atmosphere, and only the heat-resistant section carrying the crew narrowly managed to land on the planet. Although there had been a number of casualties from the shootouts when the rebellion broke out, the majority of the crew were able to alight safely on the planet's ground.
However, the ship was badly damaged, and the engine had been blown away into space. Knowing that return to their mother Earth was no longer possible, they breathed the air of this planet. The unknown planet Zi. There was nothing they could do other than live here and make it their second homeland.
And so the rebels known as Venture Merchants and the Globally III's crew alighted on this unknown planet. The first thing they saw was a ridge of steep rocks continuing as far as the eye could see, and the scenery was quite similar to that of the primeval Earth long ago, when dinosaurs roamed.

The Central Mountain Range runs north-south across the Central Continent. It is rugged and the weather changes often, so people seldom enter and undeveloped land remains there even now as God Tribe territory. It is also the site of the front line that once divided the Wind Tribe and Earth Tribe... and now divides the Republic and Empire.
One day, as the battle between the Empire and Republic continued, there was a conflict between both armies' scouting parties, almost in the centre of the Grandvalos Mountain Range. It was a small battle, but it was in dense forest, so the fighting lasted from morning to evening.
It was when the evening sun was beginning to colour the western sky that the soldiers of both armies heard a tremendous noise. Forgetting their battle, the soldiers looked up to the sky where the noise was coming from.
An explosion split the soldiers' ears, and an enormous fireball crashed into the peak of the mountain range. Both armies' soldiers forgot their earlier fighting and ran up to the unknown flying object. Creatures with the same appearance as them descended from the badly damaged object, injured.
At first, the soldiers of both armies stayed on their guard while approaching the creatures. But once they realised they were people, the Empire and Republic scrambled to take them prisoner.
When the news reached Helic and Zenebas, the thought of the Dark Continent where their father had once fought floated into their minds. But they immediately established that this was a mistake. However, nobody had any way of knowing that although the former invaders had brought unity to the Central Continent, these visitors would stoke the flames of further war for both armies.
- Why are Zi's Weapons Zoids?
They soon became able to understand each other's language, and the Earthlings showed their scientific strength, gradually improving their treatment in the Republic. The Globally III's engineer Doctor Kronenbourg approved of the will of Helic II, who wished for peace, and offered to cooperate in weapon development for defence of the Republic, along with his subordinates.
First, they built tanks, which were easier to create per-unit and easier to mass-produce than remodelled Zoids. And as a result of holding mock battles with Zoids of the same cost, the Zoids displayed unexpectedly good performance and destroyed the tanks. Walking legs should have been far less efficient compared to tires, so why? The answer lay in the machine organism, the Zoid Core. The Core is a control device that produces the creature's movements from the electric stimuli sent by the cockpit, but at the same time is also a generator that produces vast amounts of power. The enormous power it emits supports the engine by producing a repelling force against the metal-rich surface of Zi due to the Magnesser effect. Tanks equipped with cores were immediately created, but their cores did not work. This was because the cores' nerves did not recognise the machines as their bodies, so in order to function normally, they would need to reproduce the Zoids' bodies in terms of the skeleton and nerve arrangements. The doctor decided to proceed by using Zoids as weapons. And realising that Zi's firearms were all "keep-firing weapons" (weapons without guidance systems attached) that launched shells through the gas pressure of burning gunpowder, he advised the development and mounting on Zoids of optical firearms linked to a computer firearm control system.
- The Introduction of Earth Science and Technology
The Earthling scientist Doctor Kronenbourg believed that peace would be restored on the continent if the Republic Army was victorious, and offered Earth's excellent electronic technology to the Republic. In Planet Zi's civilisation, the part that had lagged behind the most was electronics. Once Zoids were equipped with laser weaponry and guided missiles, the next thing they needed was a fire control system using computers. The one in ten thousand time-lag between the pilot discovering an enemy and pressing the laser fire button with his finger would be fatal in modern electronic warfare! To the point where a third of the cost of Earth's fighter jets in the 20th century, which cost 60 million dollars per aircraft, was the price of the computers and electronic warfare machinery equipped on them. No matter how powerful the weaponry, it was meaningless if it didn't hit the target. While reinforcing the weapons, Kronenbourg hurried to make the Republican Zoids capable of becoming electronic. The results appeared steadily, and after introducing a computer firearm control system on the Gojulas, which was equipped with numerous beam guns, it was able to lock its sights onto and attack multiple enemies at the same time.
When Kronenbourg gained information that Landbury and the other Venture Merchants had been taken in by the enemy, the Zenebas Empire, and were proceeding with the development of powerful optical weaponry and guided missiles, he decided that they would need to urgently change the armour of the Republican Zoids into material that could deal with optical weaponry and guided missiles. The existing, simply "hard" armour could not survive in modern battle. To defend against armour-piercing rounds, they would need to equip "spaced armour", which protected against the high-pressure jets the warheads launched with two layers of armour. To defend against optical weaponry, which radiated intense energy onto a single point, they required "anti-laser melting armour", in which the part that bore the attack would melt and disperse the heat. These special armours required more than a dozen types of new materials in place of the existing iron, so they would have to create numerous military base material development and production factories to develop these.

Meanwhile, the Venture Merchant Landbury had arrived on the planet one step earlier, and fortunately landed in Imperial territory without anyone noticing. He masqueraded as an Imperial civilian and observed Planet Zi.
- Provision of Various Weapons
Landbury was taken in by the Empire, and seeing through the personality of the war-loving Zenebas, he formed a contract to undertake the development and production of a number of weapons to pulverise enemies with greater destructive power.
Cruising missiles with target pursuit devices, super-high speed electromagnetic guns that could pierce the hardest of armour, bullets with proximity fuses that would automatically detonate near enemies even if they didn't hit them, wide-range aerial dissemination shells that could rain down bullets made of super-hard tungsten carbide from directly above enemies. And the establishment of a C3I (C-cubed-I) capable of advanced military manoeuvres - in other words, a unified command, control and communication system using advanced data processing systems. Coldly judging the current state of the Empire Army as "make-believe knights wearing iron armour", he gave a great speech stating that if they planned to unify the entire continent by force, mass-production of advanced modern weaponry and control of the entire army through computer systems would be essential, which gripped the heart of Emperor Zenebas.
Understanding the nature of the Empire Army, which laid stress on attacking, Landbury put more effort into augmenting their Zoids' attack strength than their defence. He formed a contract with Emperor Zenebas and was entrusted with the management of a ten-thousand-man military factory. He made a profit by delivering the powerful high-tech firearms they created there, such as various optical weaponry and magnetic guns (railguns) to the army. First he planned an energy weapon system, in which they would expand the strong power units within the Zoids' bodies and use the energy they generated to operate numerous optical weapons and railguns, and began actions to equip this as standard on all Imperial Zoids. With this, Zoids that were only equipped with existing gas-operated heavy weapons, which launched bullets using the gas pressure of burning gunpowder, were mounted with high-tech artillery that displayed several times as much destructive power, and their attack strength was reinforced dramatically.
Landbury offered one more piece of high-tech equipment to the Empire, which was putting effort into attacking. Upon learning that their enemy, the Republic Army, had introduced advanced electronic searching systems, he designed external equipment with stealth abilities that could slip through the holes in their electronic search net. Landbury created an electronic warfare research room within his factory, and started development on special paints that would absorb and diffuse electromagnetic waves instead of bouncing them back. If they painted these on every surface of their Zoids' armour, they would absorb rather than reflect enemy radar waves, and they would be able to launch surprise attacks and invade deep into enemy territory without being caught by the enemy's radar sights. By the time the enemy detected them with the naked eye, the outcome would already be decided. "We will be able to carry out blitzkrieg manoeuvre combat with small-scale formations, destroying enemies instantly with a volley of countless optical weapons and guided missiles!" he asserted. This idea pleased Emperor Zenebas greatly.

"The special qualities of Zoids as combat weapons lie in close combat!" Seeing this, Landbury reconsidered the Empire Army's current current method of using Zoids, "If you come across an enemy, fight it", from its foundations. Thanks to the introduction of Earthling technology, the enemy Republic Army's Zoids were clad in reinforced armour made of composite materials, prepared with equipment to counter electronic warfare, and equipped with computer-controlled optical weaponry. Perhaps not completely, but he thought that it would be impossible to defeat their enemies with the existing battle method of entrusting their luck to the heavens.
Landbury first embarked on specialising the characteristics of each Zoid, establishing formations in which an entire division would function as a single organism, with the goal of making contact with the enemy's mobile forces with the fewest sacrifices.
And he thoroughly impressed on all warriors, "No matter how close the enemy bullets are landing, and no matter whether your comrades are injured, make sure you never break this formation!"
"Even if the machines in the front row take direct hits from the enemy and are destroyed, stay cool-headed and never change your attack speed or course! Climb over their corpses and pursue the enemy!" he ordered. This was just like a revival of the "Phalanx Formation" that had boasted invincibility in the age of the Greeks, in which they would approach the enemy without being perturbed by any attack, deploy immediately at their commander's orders, and switch into close combat with the enemy.
Only the scouting machines following at the very back of this formation would not participate in combat, and would instead record the battle from beginning to end as image data and bring it home as tactical data for the next battle.
"Business and war are the same. The one who establishes a system to make a profit, or the one who establishes a system to win, will survive."
There were no aesthetics to his thoughts. However, when he attained victories with these tactics, Landbury became able to state his opinions not only to mere weapons development engineers within the army but directly to Zenebas.

Earth's Science and Technology Introduced to Republic Zoids
They soon became able to understand each other's language, and the Earthlings gradually improved their treatment in the Republic by showing their technology to the people of Zi.
The Globally III's engineer Doctor Kronenbourg was one of the people who approved of the will of Helic II, who wished for "peace on the continent". He believed that peace would be brought to the continent if the Republic Army was victorious, and promised to lend his strength to developing powerful weapons for defence of the Republic, along with a few dozen subordinates. And so he proposed the production of several excellent Earth weapons, but for some reason, none of them were approved by the parliament.
After some time, he eventually learned how the people of Zi thought. To the people of Zi, who had lived together with machine lifeforms for millennia, unrefined weapons such as fighter jets, tanks and intercontinental ballistic missiles did not suit their "aesthetics". Zi's people wished for the progress of weapons using the machine lifeforms Zoids, the way things had been until now.
Here, Doctor Kronenbourg realised that all firearms on Zi were "keep-firing weapons" (weapons without guidance systems attached) that launched shells through the gas pressure of burning gunpowder, and pressed forward with the mounting on Zoids of optical firearms linked to a computer firearm control system. At the same time, the doctor also offered Earth's excellent electronic technology to the Republic.

Landbury-Style Combat Manual
Install laser-resistant armour on the Molga's entire body, and give it the role of charging into the enemy's mobile forces and breaking down their formations. Deploy pursuit missiles linked to active phase-scanning radar on the Redhorn and Ironkong, which have anti-air equipment, for use against enemies that fly in from the sky. Against approaching enemy shells, have all machines participating in the operation fire a barrage at once, and for minefields, have Sinkers clear them out with carpet bombing to secure a route.
The enemy's situation will be photographed from high altitude and instantly distributed to all participating machines using laser signals, and the formations of our troops will be finely tuned to oppose the enemy's formations.
|
Charge into the enemy's forces with an Assault Unit composed of Zoids with excellent manoeuvrability and forward firepower, and give it the role of breaking down their formations. Taking advantage of the formation's collapse, the Combat Unit will charge in and make the enemy's main forces powerless using hand-to-hand combat. The Redhorn and Ironkong will also serve in anti-air protection. The Heavy Artillery Unit will mop up the enemy's surviving forces in a series of battles and gain complete control through surface shelling of reinforcements.
Along with securing control of the skies, the Strategic Air Force Combat Unit will secure and support the Armoured Division's route via scouting and clearing out minefields with carpet bombing. The enemy's situation will be photographed from high altitude and data-linked</strong> to all participating machines using laser signals, and the engaging formations will be finely tuned.

However, by attaining success with these tactics, Landbury managed to gain a position where he could state his opinions not only to mere weapons merchants but directly to Zenebas.
Thus the Empire accomplished modernisation not only of its equipment but also its tactics. However, the Republic followed this modern combat, and the war once again returned to a competitive state. Outcomes were influenced by how well they had mastered the modernised equipment and tactics, and the victorious forces became proud of how advanced they were, regardless of faction.
However, not a single person yet knew what would come of battles between fully modernised forces.
