The Cannon Tortoise BC is an upgrade using the CP-05 Large-Caliber Beam Cannon Set that emphasizes the Tortoise's already-stellar long-ranged capabilities. It upgrades it with a gun that allows it to provide support fire even from the rear lines.  [1]

- Concept Art

This concept for the Cannon Tortoise BC was featured in the May 2000 issue of CoroCoro along with several other Zoids and their customize parts. Of note are two additional shock absorbers modified into the sides of the shell. There are slight modifications across the entire design, but they kept true to the 'feel' of it for the final version.

- Military History

ZAC 2100, June, Defense Forces

The Western Continent War was in a precarious position. President Camford of the Helic Republic made the risky decision to mobilize 20 of the Republic's most powerful mainland defense forces, consisting of over 400,000 troops and 20,000 Zoids from Yubit Port. Once they reached the open seas of the Deldaros Ocean they were attacked by Sinkers from the Empire. The Sinkers, however, hadn't anticipated to be countered by some of the Republic's most powerful bombardment Zoids, including Gojulas the Ogre, Dibisons, Shield Liger DCS-Js, and of course, Cannon Tortoise BCs. They shot the Sinkers out of the skies from the decks of the flying Neo Turtle Ships.

ZAC 2100, October, Nyxie Base Invasion

Near the end of the Western Continent War the Republic marched on Nyxie Base. Their advantage was a massive bombardment, spearheaded by Ultra The Destroyer, an overwhelmingly powerful Zoid. Once they reached the base countless Zoids fought to claim it, with Cannon Tortoise BCs being seen among the combatants, even fighting in point-blank range to take on the fierce Elephanders that were defending the base.

ZAC 2101, October, Skirmishes

The Cannon Tortoise BC was briefly pictured in an overview discussing the invasion of the Dark Continent of Nyx and the many battles that broke out across the land. It's not clear what specific battles it fought in, however.

- Notable Details

  • Early on when the Cannon Tortoise BC was being introduced, it was noted as the Heavy Gun Spec. This name was also used in some early games.

  •  In the anime depiction it didn't actually retain both cannons. Instead, it used the original cannon to install what appears to be an additional hydraulic arm to support the new, heavy weapon. This seems to be a shout out to the original concept art. It's possible (though pure speculation) that the anime was working with the early concept art, as its first appearance in the anime was only a couple of months or so after the final CP was revealed in CoroCoro. This trait isn't universal to the 'Heavy Gun Spec.', as other sources (such as games and CoroCoro) all retain the original cannon as an extra weapon. It's just a neat extra detail for the anime and original concept.

  • As of the Western Continent War roughly 3,000 Cannon Tortoise BC were deployed in the Republican Army's Heavy Gunner Force.

- Additional Equipment Information

- Large-Caliber Beam Cannon x1

Large-Caliber Beam Cannon x1 大口径ビームキャノン×1

The Republican Army had concerns about wether the Liquid-Cooled Charged Particle Beam Cannon alone was sufficient for its rear-support role, and developed the Large-Caliber Beam Cannon as an answer to those concerns. This not only increased its offensive abilities but also gave it ultra-long-range firing capabilities. The cannon can raise up and down to control its firing distance.

- Shock Absorbers x2

Shock Absorbers x2 ショックアブソーバー×2

The new cannon had incredible range and power, but installing it revealed that the Cannon Tortoise couldn't handle the increased recoil. So, shock absorbers were added to the rear of the shell, allowing the Zoid to brace itself while firing the Beam Cannon.

1. All information, unless stated otherwise, is from the CP-05 package or Official Fan Books.

2. Base stats are referenced from Zoids Saga and the Battle Card Game (for height). While the BCG lists the weight as 33.6 this is the default Tortoise weight, so I'm electing to ignore it.
