Spantz was the second pilot involved in the Development Teams' test battle, which sought to determine what would be most effective in the long run: Retrofitting old Zoids with new equipment, which was much more cost effective, or developing entirely new machines based on state-of-the-art technology. He and Lieutenant Payle Geordot were up against the new Geno Saurer, piloted by Ritz Runstedt. This was the first combat test of the ferocious Zoid, and his own unit was torn to shreds almost instantly. He was injured during the battle, but presumeably survived.
