- Episode 4: The Black Wolf of the Gale

What do we fight for? In times like these, all I can think about is a warm place to eat a good meal... I don't have time to think about the greater reasons during my daily sorties... I'm not sure if I want to think about it either, but I think that where I am now, is where I belong, and I'm going to carry out the task at hand. For a soldier, that is reason enough as a rider...

"Power gauge stabilizing."

"All right, we're moving on to phase two, Sergeant Miyaachi."

"Yes, sir! I'm on it."

A wolf-shaped Zoid ran across the ground. It was the new test machine of the True Empire Army, which was still struggling against the Imperial Army. A machine equipped with an All-Weather High-Powered Booster developed by Dr. Land, which gave it far greater mobility and power than previous models.

He received instructions from the technicians monitoring the rider.

"Increase the All-Weather High-Powered Booster's ignition output to 30%!"

Sergeant Miyachi ignited the All-Weather High-Powered Booster as instructed by the technician, and the intense Gs tried to push his body out of the seat.

"Ugh..."

"Sergeant Miyachi? Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm good!"

"All right, keep it coming! Let's see what this thing can do."

The wolf Zoid accelerated as they further increased the output of the All-Weather High-Powered Boosters. On the monitor screen in the operations room, they could see the output gauge going up.

"36%... 40%... 45%... 50%, we're over 50% output!"

"Way to go, Sarge! That's the highest we've ever gone! Keep accelerating to full throttle."

But there was no reply from Sergeant Miyaichi over the comms in the operations room.

"Hey, Sergeant? Can you hear me?"

In the seat of the wolf-type Zoid, Sergeant Miyachi who, losing consciousness due to the intense acceleration Gs, was slumped and no longer in a state of being able to maintain consciousness.

"The rider is losing consciousness! It's too dangerous to continue!"

"Hey, Sarge, can you hear me? If you can hear me, talk to me."

The words from the operation room wouldn't reach the Sergeant's ears... He was completely unconscious in the seat of the Zoid, which was driving at an overwhelming rate of acceleration.

"The rider has completely lost consciousness, sir."

"Emergency stop! Initiate the forced shutdown protocol for the All-Weather High-Powered Boosters! Shut it down and meet me at the Zoid recovery point!"

The technician looked at the wolf-type Zoid through the monitor and sighed to himself as it came to rest on the ground and crossed its paws.

"This is no good... Dr. Land's All-Weather High-Powered Booster on the sonic Zoid... It was supposedly developed specifically for Victor Spiegel, but even if Spiegel is able to ride this Zoid, will he be able to handle it?"

It was 3:36 PM in the True Empire Army's interior dock.

After the recapture of the capital, Imperial soldiers had joined one after another, and gathered for a large-scale attack on the True Empire Army's Tramonto Base.

In the beginning, the True Empire Army continued to resist the onslaught from the Imperial Army, but a deluge of Imperial troops advancing from numerous directions had gradually exhausted them, and many bases were at a critical risk of being destroyed.

"In the event that Tramonto Base falls, it will have a huge impact on the reputation of the True Empire Army... And the morale of our soldiers. So we must befend Tramonto base, and drive out the Imperial forces! Then the cause and justice of the True Empire Army will be proven!"

The True Empire Army, which couldn't afford any more defeats, decided to send Victor Spiegel, the greatest ace rider of their army, to defend Tramonto Base.

It was only the third day after Spiegel was assigned to Tramonto Base. The sensors at the base confirmed that a large number of Zoids belonging to the Imperial Army had gathered around it, just as the Imperial Army Intelligence Department had predicted.

"Whoa, whoa, it seems the enemy is right on our doorstep, huh?"

Victor Spiegel, a military man with a fearless face and an aloofness that was somehow irresistible, was frustrated by the situation, one where he could only watch in silence as the enemy forces closed in around the base.

"If any more enemies gather here, it'll be impossible to intercept them all! What's happening with my Drei Panther, can't we launch it yet?"

"I'm sorry... It's not even armed yet, we've only gotten the exterior armor on so far."

In Tramonto Base's interior dock, the mechanics, like Spiegel, had rushed to the base and were hurriedly performing maintenance on the Zoids, but they were barely able to maintain the front lines in this trapped situation, where their supply routes had been closed off due to the progress of the Imperial Army, and even Zoids that were able to go out weren't armed.

In this midst of this tense situation, a message came in from the operations room.

"They're advancing into the defensive range of the Imperial Army's Zoid base! It appears to be the enemy's Advance Assault Force, with several Cannon Bulls leading at the front, shielded by a bombardment from the Bazootles in the back! Roughly ten machines have been confirmed on radar. Riders, hurry up and prepare to launch!"

"So they're finally here, huh...? The Empire's advancing in great numbers. Does that mean they know that we're running out of supplies...?"

"Mechanics! Have you replenished Hunter Wolf's ammunition yet? We're going to launch as soon as possible!"

Spiegel mumbled to himself as he climbed into the Hunter Wolf's cockpit with a look of conviction on his face.

"Looks like you and I are both out of luck. If the food in this place was crappy, I'd be out of here... But even in a place like this, the stew isn't so bad."

The command center could hear Spiegel muttering to himself while the comms were still on. He got a message from them a moment later.

"I hear your, Spiegel. Do you know what you and your Zoid are being asked to do?"

"Yeah yeah, but I have no intention of dying here either, so please prepare a warm stew for me..."

Even in this tense situation, Spiegel's light-hearted talk which lacked any sense of urgency or anxiety made some of those in the operation room smile. This man's talent as a soldier was that he could keep up the morale of the other soldiers, even in a critical situation like this, and encouraged them to believe in the success of their operation. As a commander, he should've been in charge of the bigger picture, but this man had no interest in anything beyond what he had to do on the battlefield.

The operator interrupted his conversation with the command center.

"The enemies are now completey within the defensive range! Victor Spiegel, please sortie."

Spiegel's expression, so light hearted when he'd been talking a moment earlier, instantly changed.

Spiegel moved the Hunter Wolf to the catapult.

"How many times have we fought together... and now, with this many enemies... it looks like today is the day I'm going to let you run as fast as you want."

"Activate B-suit! Hunter Wolf, launch!"

As soon as he launched from the catapult, the Hunter Wolf ignited its All-Weather High-Powered Boosters and began to accelerate. Its output gauge quickly reached 50%, and it dove into the enemy's bombardment.

In the command center, several technicians were watching the output gauge of the Hunter Wolf on the monitor.

"Victor Spiegel... Now that's what I'm talking about, you've already driven the output of the All-Weather High-Powered Boosters up to 50%. I'm sure you'll be able to show us even more in this battle."

On the battlefield, the young soldiers of the Imperial Army were confused by the Hunter Wolf that suddenly appeared in front of them, stricken both by impatience and surprise.

"W-who's that!? Where'd they come from? It's impossible for them to be this close after just appearing on the radar... What the hell is this Zoid?"

The Bazootles instantly stopped and sprayed bullets down around the Hunter Wolf.

"You're young... and while you may have the numbers, you're still just a rag-tag group, and if you get swallowed up by the battlefield's atmosphere, you'll only give your enemies an opening..."

After calmly assessing the attack, Spiegel accelerated his Zoid further and closed the distance between him and the Bazootles in an instant.

As soon as he was within range, he shot the Bazootle square in the cockpit with a precise shot from his gatling, stopping it in its tracks.

"Woah, that's absurd! There are no units in the line of fire!? What kind of speed is that enemy wolf moving at...?"

In an instant, the confused battlefield received instructions from the leader of the Imperial Troops.

"Calm down! It's only one enemy! Each of you spread out and encircle the enemy, and if he's too fast, use the Turtle Shell formation to cut off his escape routes and then rain shells down on him!"

The Imperial Zoids, which managed to regain their composure under the direction of the unit commander, surrounded the Hunter Wolf.

A 360-degree bombardment from the formation carried out by the nine units, structured in the form of a tortoise shell was concentrated on the Hunter Wolf, which was trapped inside the formation with nowhere to escape.

The formation was filled with explosions and smoke, but the bombardment continued as if their aim was to destroy the entire earth.

"Fwahahahahahaha! How about that? Now he's all but gone! A fitting end to a traitor to the Empire."

However, as soon as a light appeared in the flames, two of the Bazootles were destroyed.

"Weapons Release, MACHINE BLAST!"

Igniting the All-Weather High-Powered Booster, the Hunter Wolf instantly sliced through two Bazootles with its claws while moving at high speeds, then disappeared from the scene while the formation was broken once more.

In the blink of an eye, the Imperial Army, unable to keep up with the situation, was once again struck with fear and anxiety.

"What's going on? Is he still alive after that bombardment!?"

The Imperial Soldiers searched their radars for the Hunter Wolf on the battlefield, where visiblity had become even more obscured by the smoke of the bombardment. Only, the radar of the Imperial soldier's Zoids repeatedly showed several enemy machines blipping in and out on the radar, as if the radar monitor were broken.

"What the hell is this!? We've got multiple enemy machines on radar!"

"What the hell is going on? There's more than one enemy?"

One Imperial soldier's Cannon Bull, confused and looking at the radar, was torn apart and collapsed on the spot.

The Imperial Forces, unable to grasp what was happening, could no longer maintain their formation, and each machine began to retreat from the scene in pieces.

The Hunter Wolf's attack, moving at the speed of sound, was enough to break the enemy's formation in one fell swoop, but these movements were putting an unimaginable strain on Spiegel's body. Every bone in his body creaked, and the shock hit Spiegel as if his entire body was being torn apart.

"Huff... Huff... Huff... That's seven machines left."

The booster output of the Hunter Wolf, which had used its Weapon Release and the impact from the All-Weather High-Powered Boosters as propulsion, had exceeded 90% of its limit.

That output was about to reach its limit through the B-suit, even for the mighty Spiegel. The Hunter Wolf's metal body, which emitted a lot of heat from acceleration, was making a metallic sound when it touched the air, and yet the Zoid still wanted to run more! It was as if the Hunter Wolf was speaking to Spiegel.

If the battle dragged on any longer, it wouldn't be long before the damage to his body reached its limit, and Spiegel knew this better than anyone. So, Spiegel and Hunter Wolf attacked their enemies immediately.

"Let's go! Show me what you can really do!"

The Hunter Wolf's All-Weather High-Powered Boosters, which were once again using its Machine Blast, accelerated to maximum output. On the battlefield, where the smoke screen remained, they were unable to see the Hunter Wolf. They only saw the blue-white flashe of the Sonic Booster emitted by the wolf, which glowed as an afterimage in the smoke. Completely confused, the Imperial soldiers felt nothing but fear for the Hunter Wolf on their radar.

"More and more enemies are appearing on the radar! It's not just the one! It's... 5... 6... 7... No, they keep increasing. There are too many of them..."

The afterimage of the Sonic Boosters left behind by the Hunter Wolf as it rushed past at speeds exceeding the speed of sound appeared to the enemy's radar as if there were multiple machines moving through the area.

The output of the High-Powered Boosters displayed on the Hunter Wolf's cockpit monitor had finally reached 100%. Even so, the Hunter Wolf driven by Spiegel began to accelerate further.

"Weapon Release, MACHINE BLAST!"

The Sonic Boosters of the Hunter Wolf swung into its second form as it activated its Machine Blast, and as it released sonic waves a huge Sonic Sickle was fired.

It took only a few seconds... The enemy Zoids that had scattered were torn in half one after another, and collapsed to the ground.

"Huff... huff... huff... huff... The last two..."

Hunter Wolf defeated as many as seven enemies from an overwhelming disadvantage, but at the same time, Spiegel was nearing his limit in the cockpit.

The repeated impacts of the Sonic Boosters left Spiegel barely conscious. Any further movement using the boosters would be dangerous to his life. The Hunter Wolf stopped moving and stood there.

Hunter Wolf knew that Spiegel had reached his limit in the cockpit. It had a good understanding of its rider Spiegel, who had ran with it through the battlefield time and time again.

"I'm sorry, Hunter Wolf... I seemed to have reached my limit here. You can still do this, though..."

As the Hunter Wolf stood there, it screamed a war cry towards the heavens, a war cry that echoed across the battlefield.

"Ha... Ahahahahaha, you really are something... I understand, Hunter Wolf!"

The two remaining Imperial Cannon Bulls began to fall back as if frightened by the war cry. The Cannon Bulls knew that the enemy in front of them was no ordinary person after being shown the mobility and combat power of the Hunter Wolf.

The Cannon Bulls weren't the only ones who had heard the Hunter Wolf's war cry.

The Drei Panther, which was undergoing maintenance in the True Empire base away from the battlefield, started moving on its own. Then the catapult began to activate. The mechanics in the base were shocked.

"Who-Who's on board!? It's not even armed!"

"Nobody is on board! The Drei Panther is out of control!!!"

"What!? What the hell are you talking about!?"

The Drei Panther, with nobody on board, leapt from the catapult with great momentum, driven to leave the base and head for the battlefield as soon as it had heard "that voice".

The Empire's commander, who was forced into this situation after being so convinced of his victory, tried to end the Hunter Wolf with one full-blown attack, all the while pushing the Cannon Bull, which had begun to back away, forward again.

"Don't you dare, traitor! This is unacceptable! I won't allow this to happen to the Imperial Guard!"

Just as he shouted, the two remaining Cannon Bulls simultaneously used their weapon release, and unleashed the Nine Burst Cannon! At the same time, the two Cannon Bulls rushed forward in a pinch maneuver on the Hunter Wolf.

When Spiegel saw the flashes of the Nine Burst Cannons trying to pin him down from both sides, which would've been impossible to avoid with normal movements, he was prepared for his own end.

Spiegel spoke to his Hunter Wolf.

"I'm sorry, I wish I could've run more with you..."

With Spiegel in this situation, the Hunter Wolf prepared to attack the Cannon Bull. It confronted their enemies, taking a battle stance as if telling Spiegel, who had accepted his own end, not to give up.

When Spiegel saw this, he smiled bitterly.

"Well, you can still run, can't you!? That's right... I was just thinking about how I can't wait to eat a good stew."

Spiegel, exerting all of his strength, raced towards the Cannon Bulls with the All-Weather High-Powered Boosters ignited at maximum output.

The Hunter Wolf's figure, which had just barely managed to avoid the Cannon Bull's Nine Burst Cannon coming towards them from in front and behind, vanished in an instant.

The two Cannon Bulls rushed at each other, their huge bodies colliding with one another. The Imperial Soldiers had been too impatient.

"Ugghhh... What are you doing, get off!"

"Where is he? There was nowhere to run!"

The two Cannon Bulls were half destroyed already, their huge horns broken and their enormous bodies intertwined as they faced each other.

"Weapons release, MACHINE BLAST!"

The Hunter Wolf was far above the ground where the two Cannon Bulls had collided. It had accelerated through the air from its initial zero propulsion to far above them. As a land-based wolf-type Zoid, its trajectory was unpredictable to anyone. When the radar detected that the Hunter Wolf was in the sky, the Imperial soldiers were astonished.

"No way! You think the wolf of the True Empire can fly? There's no way this guy could... really be capable of..."

On the monitor in the cockpit the Hunter Wolf was in the sky above, and the output gauge of the All-Weather High-Powered Boosters was displaying an error that it had exceeded 100% output.

Spiegel had pulled more than the limit of the All-Weather High-Powered Booster's output, and from that desperate situation, he'd now gotten a chance to attack. However, it was a chance that he had gotten in exchange for his own life. Spiegel could barely a speak, an expression of pain across his face.

"All the way up here..."

At the same time that Spiegel spoke, an alarm sounded in the cockpit.

"What? What is it, Hunter Wolf?"

Before Spiegel could restrain himself, the cockpit of the Hunter Wolf separated from the machine with a loud bang. The Hunter Wolf activated its emergency escape system and forcibly ejected Spiegel!

Spiegel couldn't hide his surprise, but his consciousness was swallowed by the darkness.

At the same time that it had ejected Spiegel, the Hunter Wolf deployed the A-Z Super-Electromagnetic Blades mid-air.

It sliced the two Cannon Bulls in half.

The battlefield fell completely silent after the Cannon Bulls had collapsed.

The invasion of the Imperial Army, which was supposed to have met them with an overwhelming advantage, had been completely defeated in a battle against a single Hunter Wolf driven by Victor Spiegel, and the True Empire Army had succeeded in defending Tramonto Base.

In the silence of the battlefield, the Hunter Wolf, despite barely being able to walk, momentarily looked back at Spiegel, who had been thrown from the cockpit. Then, it quietly walked away and disappeared from the battlefield.

He wasn't sure how much time had passed, but on the silent battlefield, only the wreckage of the cruelly destroyed Imperial Zoids could tell the story of what had happened there.

Spiegel woke up on the battlefield, left behind in the glare of the sun.

Seeing the wreckage of the Cannon Bulls, he understood that the battle was over.

"But... I'm alive? Where's Hunter Wolf? He couldn't have possibly been trying to save me..."

Spiegel looked around the area, worried to see that there was no Hunter Wolf there—

Then saw the Drei Panther reflected in his eyes.

"You, why are you here?"

When he saw the Drei Panther, Spiegel spoke to it as if he'd realized everything.

"You came to help me..."

Spiegel boarded the cockpit of the Drei Panther, which didn't respond, and returned to the base.

After that, the search for the Hunter Wolf by the True Empire Army continued, but without finding the slightest testimony or trace of it, the search was terminated and the Hunter Wolf was declared a lost Zoid.

Imperial Army Base Command Room

"The Hunter Wolf, is it still unaccounted for?"

"Yes, a massive search of a 100 kilometer radius has yielded no trace of the Zoid, let alone any biological reactions... The only way to find it is to expand the search into Imperial combat zones... The higher-ups have decided to end the search. I'm sorry."

"It's a shame that we lost this machine... The combat data of the All-Weather High-Powered Boosters at 100% output would've been very useful for the future development of the True Empire Army's units."

"However, after analyzing the combat data here, it seems the 100% output was only when Spiegel was on board, and the Hunter Wolf's output after Spiegel lost consciousness dropped down to 30%."

"In the end it's a Zoid that you just won't understand... Or perhaps, it's Dr. Land who should be feared, as he developed the Hunter Wolf... For Spiegel's exclusive use. Was he taking into account the compatibility between Spiegel and the wolf? No way..."
