- Zoids Wild Biography: Douglas Aldridge

- Episode 2: A Warrior's Qualities

Tramanto Base was located in a valley, far north of the Imperial Capital, Neo Zenebas City. The True Empire had defended the base, and with its facilities equipped to develop new territories, they were excited to expand their reach in the future. They dispatched reinforcements to each of the bases that they now occupied in preparation for the coming recapture operations that would be led by the Imperial Army. They were raising morale in order to turn the tides.

In the mean time, a particular man was heading to the hangar, filled with the loyalties and ambitions of the True Empire. That man's name was Douglas Aldridge. He wanted to find in the True Empire the strong Imperial Army he had once known, but had been destroyed by its alliance with the disgusting Republican Army, and he had always wanted to support that new strength.

While he was a little jealous that Spiegel had been the one to defeat Giller, he told himself that he would have plenty of opportunities to fight in the future as he stood in front of his favorite machine, a Fangtiger with black armor. It was equipped with verniers for high speed and a radar for searching for targets. It was his own custom Zoid, modified for special operations missions.

It looked down at Aldridge with its blood red eyes.

"You seem hungry for battle too, so follow me."

Just as Aldridge was talking to his favorite machine, an old man called out from behind him.

"Do you know what the purpose of this mission is?"

When he turned around, it was Jonathan Siegal.

"Yes, of course. I'm going to get rid of those dullards once and for all."

Just a few minutes ago they'd received a report that they had discovered an enemy Bazootle unit deployed near Casey City, which was located southeast of the True Empire's headquarters.

It was Headquarter's wish to dispatch support units immediately, but they couldn't reach the base without crossing a steep mountainous area, and without air support it was creating a bottleneck. Even so, they couldn't afford to waste time. So, Aldridge, a fangtiger pilot who was expected to get there the fastest, was given the task of supporting the base.

"That's an important base for the True Empire. Even if the Imperial Army's weak, stay alert. We'll send reinforcements later, you just have to keep them off your back."

"Don't worry, Brigadier General. By the time the reinforcements arrive, I'll already have everything taken care of."

Alridge climbed into his Zoid and the Z-O visor glowed red.

"B-resistant suit functionality normal. Fangtiger, launch!"

With a low roar, they ran out of the base.

"Ahh, there's such thing as too much motivation..."

Spiegel muttered to himself from the cockpit as he watched the Fangtiger head out towards Casey Base. He'd been tasked to follow Aldridge and oversee his mission. He'd thought he could take it easy for a while after defeating Giller, but he found himself sighing more and more. The task of keeping track of Aldridge without being noticed only spurred on more sighs.

For him, who only wanted to earn enough money to eat, it was hard to understand Aldridge, who wanted to use his army to further his own ideals. What would he possibly do if he actually achieved his goals? He shook his head and let the inane thoughts disappear. He had to keep an eye on him to make sure he didn't do anything stupid, then bring him back safely. That way, he'd still earn his meal for the day. That was more than enough for him. Even so, it would be a while before they reached their destination. He sighed from his boredom once again, how many times he couldn't remember.

It had been a few hours after they'd left the True Empire headquarters. Aldridge's eyes got more serious as he spotted the black smoke rising above his destination. The heavy bass that echoed through the wilderness was a clear indication that they were still engaged in the battle. The Imperial Army, which had failed in their previous effort to recapture the city, were now in the position to pull ahead. He was thankful for that. They'd gone through all the trouble of leading their troops there, just so he could strike them down.

"Let's go, Fangtiger!"

The All-Weather High-Powered Boosters spewed fire as if it were roaring. Immediately afterwards, the Fangtiger accelerated with the force of a sudden impact.

"Hey, are you insane!?"

Spiegel couldn't help but yell, as he was the one watching over Aldridge. To plunge into battle against that many enemies was suicide, no matter how good the Fangtiger was.

"You're running into this just for the glory..."

He muttered hatefully as he also ran towards the base.

The Imperial Bazootle squadron continued their bombardment to recapture the base. There was little resistence from their enemies, and everyone figured that this would be an easy victory, but then...

-Kabooooooom!

Sudenly, an explosion sounded from behind them, and a black saber-toothed tiger appeared. One Bazootle was dropped without ever having the chance to react.

"I guess I was right to give up on them if they only have this much power."

The Bazootles slowly hunkered back at the sound of Aldridge's voice, which was dripping with ridicule.

"What, aren't you coming? Fine, then I'll come to you!"

Spiegel hid in the shadows, observing the situation. Aldridge and Fangtiger showed off their amazing mobility, racing around the battlefield as if they were leaping. At such speeds the Bazootles couldn't keep up. Brigadier General Land himself had designed and modified everything from its verniers to its armaments, specifically for him. His control was so impressive that you'd think he could move his machine more freely than his own limbs. But, how long would that last...

It was such an unreasonable way of fighting. Even with the benefits of the B-Resistant Suit, the pilot's body would struggle to withstand the strain from their Zoid. He'd reach his limit soon, then both he and his Zoid would be captured as prizes of war.

"Jeez, I'm supposed to take care of you..."

Spiegel prepared to aid him in case of the worst case scenario.

However, as he defeated one, then two Bazootles, Fangtiger's movements began to increase, rather than slowing down. It bobbed and weaved around the gun fire and lashed its claws out, as if saying "Let's rampage some more!" Then it dodged even more attacks, and obstructed its enemy's actions with gunfire. Then, just as a Cannon Bull was turning to leave, it was turned into a virtual honeycomb with gunfire from behind.

Spiegel blinked at the improbable sight. Aldridge's body should have definitely been damaged by all of this, but despite that, he continued to exhibit precise maneuvering skills without any deviation. Then Spiegel remembered. Aldridge had previously had the physical strength to keep the Genospino running for a long time. So, it seemed the Major wasn't just a gloryhound after all.

"Guah!?"

Aldridged looked down with cold eyes as he pressed his paw down upon the final Bazootle of the unit.

"So how is it? The power of my true empire."

In the cockpit of the Bazootle, a man let out muffled words, staring back with hate-filled eyes.

"... If we lose here, the next unit will soon arrive. Even if you defeat us, there will be more... You're finished."

"Well, that's good to hear."

"What...?"

"You'll all be casualties of war!"

--Scrreeee!

A high-pitched sound echoed throughout the area, and the Bazootle ceased to move. There were no more enemies around. Their allies had received heavy damage, but thankfully, there didn't appear to be any casualties.

"Well done, Tiger. That's my pal."

Aldridge's words weren't spoken with the slightest hint of fatigue. Fangtiger responded with a low growl. He smiled at the voice of his new companion. Aldridge had faith in the qualities of this Fangtiger. Every time they were in a tight spot, it exceeded his expectations. Their fight earlier on with Dias was one example of that.

Fangtiger suddenly felt a presence, and turned around. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted an armed Hunter Wolf.

"There's still one left...!"

 Fangtiger growled menacingly.

Spiegel felt a chill run down his spine, and hurriedly shouted. "Wait, Aldridge! It's me, Spiegel!"

He spoke through the communicator, but the words couldn't reach Aldridge's excited brain. He was trembling with the joy of having found a new enemy.

"Hey, aren't you listening? Aldridge!"

"That kind of opponent is no match for you. We'll finish him off immediately!"

"Guh!?"

Spiegel's face twisted as soon as he saw him charge. He hestitated for just a moment. Should he run away, or...!

Aldridge screamed out, as if to ridicule his hesitation.

"Let's go, Fangtiger! Weapon Release! Machine Blast!"

All of the firearms attached to the Fangtiger's entire body deployed, revealing the two huge fangs, the Twinned Fangs. He had no choice! Spiegel made up his mind.

"Hunter Wolf! Weapon Release! Machine Blast!!"

He fired the Gatling Gun almost at the same instant as the Machine Blast, but because of his hesitation, the trajectory was easily dodged. Without so much as slowing down the Fangtiger attacked from point blank range. He quickly deployed the A-Z Super-Electromagnetic Blades, but couldn't make it in time.

His momentary hesitation had backfired. Spiegel was prepared to be hit by the Twinned Fangs, but he wasn't going to go down without a fight. He leaned his unit to the left to reduce as much damage as possible.

But, it didn't play out as Spiegel had imagined. Fangtiger jumped over his Hunter Wolf and flashed the Twinned Fangs at the Cannon Bull behind it.

--Slash!

Right after it had tore off the right horn and foreleg of the Cannon Bull, the Fangtiger landed on its back.

"There was still an enemy...? He wasn't attacking me?"

After cleaning out the last of the enemies, the Fangtiger returned to its original form.

"I'm surprised the score-keeper doesn't watch his own back. Did you come here just to get in my way? You even shot at me."

"Oh, no... I'm sorry..."

 Aldridge snorted in boredom.

Apparently, his discrete surveillance, which he thought had been perfectly executed, had been noticed quite some time ago. On top of that, he was the one that ended up getting helped. It was funny, he'd been sent there to support Aldridge, but instead he was the one who'd been saved.

"According to them, Imperial reinforcements are still coming. Spiegel, you should continue lurking in the shadows and keeping an eye on us."

"I've just screwed up. I'd prefer to work for my salary."

"Hmph, suit yourself."

From a distance they could hear the sounds of the earth rumbling from the Imperial Army's reinforcements. It seemed that it was far more units than the previous unit.

"Tiger, eat them all!"

Just as the Fangtiger let out a ferocious roar, the communicator beeped in.

"Aldridge, Spiegel, You did well with your mission."

It was the voice of Jonathan Siegal.

"Our mission isn't over yet. I plan to intercept the Imperial Reinforcements."

"No, that won't be necessary. Leave the base to the reinforcements that'll be arriving shortly. I've prepared a new mission for you. I want you to head straight to the coordinates I'm about to send you."

Aldridge grumbled while checking over the map he received.

"After providing support, we're supposed to capture an Imperial base? Spiegel, let's get there ahead of time and wait."

With that said, he began running towards his new destination. Spiegel sighed and followed him.

As they ran through the wilderness, Spiegel reviewed his thoughts on Aldridge. His first impression of him being some reckless soldier fighting for ambition had already disappeared. Now he realized that he was a great warrior, backed by experience and ability. He wasn't sure if he entirely understood him, but perhaps it wouldn't be so bad to fight together. He was starting to think so, anyway.

"Not going to hide now?"

Spiegel suspiciously eyed the communication that suddenly came in from Aldridge.

"I'm not going to help you next time, even if you get attacked."

Spiegel sighed at the bitter words.

"It looks like he's even more of a jerk than I expected..."

For Aldridge, Spiegel was nothing more than a hindrance. He wanted to check on the Fangtiger before his new mission, but he was reluctant to show his feelings for the Zoid in front of Spiegel. Perhaps the Fangtiger could sense his feelings, but he just kept running straight. Please, my comrade. Aldridge encouraged his beloved machine in his heart.

The two black beasts ran on with the setting sun at their backs. The sound of their footsteps echoed to some far away place.

- Douglas Aldridge

A former Imperial Major. He's often referred to as a rather ambitious officer, but during his stay at the Imperial Army, he was described as being extremely capable while exhibiting excellent maneuvering and commanding skills. He was imprisoned following the Genospino situation, but released under the authority of Dr. Land. At the time he was worried about the Empire's policy of reconciliation, and joined sides with the True Empire. He was re-arrested after the battle against the Omega Rex, and was informed of the fall of the True Empire while in his hospital bed.
