Raps Island was the envy of both the Empire and the Republic due to the huge number of fossils. Ed had even recovered a completely intact skeleton belonging to a velociraptor, still having all of its parts. After everything of value had been excavated, however, the armies forgot about the site, and Ed remained behind to continue the excavation. He was certain that there was something even greater, something huge buried under the island. However, over the years, he'd exhausted loans from every friend who would listen, and now running out of resources, he was in desperate need of money. When he saw the bounty for Byrne Blood, who happened to be in town, he called up the Empire and reported his presence.
He struck a deal with the Empire to take part in their capture plan. He would lead Byrne Blood across the bridge to Raps Island under the guise of wanting to hire him to clear out the Jaminga. Then the Empire would destroy the bridge, trapping and recapturing the Gatling Fox. After all, it was still a brand new piece of technology to them, and they wouldn't let it go easily. However, things got complicated when the Empire decided to bomb the entire island.
Ed could only sit and watch as his island, the dig site he'd worked on for years was blown to pieces. He returned to the island, even as the Empire was still hunting the Fox, and looked over the dig site remains. He was certain that even if he could get the funds, there was no longer any point. The Island was so heavily damaged that the fossils would surely be as well. Byrne was eventually saved by Leo and the others, but Ed was left to deal with the remains of his project, forced to admit that it had been over the second he'd let the Empire onto the island.
Unbeknownst to Ed at the time, the bombing had actually uncovered the massive fossile he'd been searching for.
