Cook Fortress   ZAC 2106, August

Cook Fortress, once again under the control of the Republican Army, had been bustling with activity since early morning that day. The surviving remnants of the main force, which had been stationed on Nyx, had completed their reorganization and were converging on Cook to rejoin the forces from the mainland. The transport ships loaned to them by the Guylos Empire, the Whale Kings, were arriving one after another, disgorging Zoids and soldiers alike. Once this three-phase transport plan was complete, and the BLOX units being mass-produced on the Eastern Continent were ready, a full-scale counteroffensive against the Imperial Army was scheduled to begin.

Of course, the Imperial Army hadn't left Cook untouched during the five months since its recapture. They had launched two major offensives and three surprise attacks, but Cook was a natural fortress. Mountains rose to the east and west, and Lake Wilson and the great Wilson River lay to the south. While the Imperial Army possessed overwhelming land forces, their naval power was roughly equal, and the Republican Army held the advantage in air power. As a result, all of the Imperial Army's recapture attempts had failed. Cook was becoming the Republican Army's largest base, and its defenses were being strengthened daily.

The strategy of the Republic Army command was to hold this position for another six months and then launch a counteroffensive. Supported by air power, they would push forward with a large number of Gojulas Giga and Gorhecks units. They would defeat the Imperial Army forces piecemeal, forcing them to spread their defenses across the entirety of Delpoi, and this time, they would retake the Republic capital.

The surrounding commotion had already reached a state of chaos. Zoids overflowed the port and warehouses, forming long queues waiting to be accommodated. Several Whale Kings circled overhead, waiting for landing clearance.

Ignoring the shouts of the maintenance crew and military police, Ray Gregg started his beloved Liger Zero as usual. He was about to begin his patrol mission. Surrounding him were his comrades from the Ray Force, who'd fought alongside him in the fierce battle against the Eisen Dragoons. However, the Ray Force no longer existed. Because they'd almost captured and then let Emperor Wolff Muroa escape. For the Ray Force, it was a big blunder (or more accurately, for Ray). The division was disbanded, and the members directly involved in the blunder were given a provisional demotion in rank. Ray and the others were assigned to patrol duty until a court-martial could be convened.

As usual, they left the gate with weary steps. That's when it happened. A vortex of light suddenly appeared. A sinister red torrent of light. It swept past Ray and his companions, striking Cook Fortress directly.

The torrent of red light that Ray and his patrol unit witnessed struck the walls of Cook Fortress. With that single blow, a large section of the front wall vanished. The destructive power was beyond anything possible with conventional weapons. It was an attack by a Large-Calibre Charged Particle Cannon.

Particle cannons were fired one after another into the fortress. For the Republican forces in the midst of receiving reinforcements, it was a surprise attack at the worst possible moment.

Even the Republic Air Force, which had been carefully patrolling within a 100km radius, was unable to detect the enemy's movements before the surprise attack.

The second shot arrived. This time it hit the control tower of the fortress. The tower collapsed, emitting black smoke. What power! Ray, who'd fought against various types of charged particle cannons understood. This was no Geno Saurer or Berserk Führer. This was the Death Saurer's particle cannon. However, when he looked around, there was no sign of the Death Dragon. The effective range of its particle cannon was several hundred meters. If the distance exceeded 1 kilometer, the charged particles would disperse and the power should be diminished. So what was it?

The relentless bombardment continued. Even Cook Fortress couldn't withstand this.

"They're coming from the southwest! The distance is unknown, but...run!"

Ceres Ardoise, who was the first to see where the light was coming from, shouted into the communicator. All the machines in the unit reacted instantly and started running at full speed. As they ran, Ray read the terrain information of the area. The Wilson River flowed from south to west. A river 20km away. Did they fire that thing from over there? Ray felt terror over the unknown enemy awaiting them on their path.

The Republican Army units that'd been patrolling to the south of Cook also hurried towards the southwest. Steve Bone was aboard the Gojulas Giga, and Dew Eld was aboard the Aroasaurer.

Cook Fortress   ZAC 2106, August

It was the Imperial Army's cutting-edge giant Zoid, the Seismosaurus, that had shot at Cook Fortress from the Wilson River. It'd been developed as a top priority to counter the threat of the Gojulas Giga by striking before the enemy could even get close, circumventing the boasted invincibility that the Giga had in close range. That was the Seismo's development concept. It was equipped with a Super-Focused Charged Particle Cannon. The long body of a sauropod-type acted as both a particle accelerator and barrel, allowing it to fire at full power even over extremely long distances. Its maximum effective range was approximately 20 kilometers on flat ground. If shot from high ground, it could reach up to about 30 kilometers away. It was a monstrous Zoid that could unilaterally annihilate any enemy.

That monster, along with 10 others just like it were traveling from the east along the riverbed of the Wilson River, which was just outside the Republican Army's reconnaissance range. They moved through Wilson Lake and reached a point about 20 kilometers away from Cook Fortress.

Ray and his patrol unit arrived at the Seismo landing site 10 minutes after the first bombardment. Even with the Zero, this was the limit for driving over natural terrain. The Seismo's mouth was dripping red, the metal slightly melted. How many shots had it actually fired? A flying Zoid from the Republican Army was lying at his feet. It was probably shot down beforehand. Behind him, he heard the roar of a giant Zoid. A group of Gigas had caught up with them. The Republican Army now had a force of 30 machines. Ray was confident in their victory. Even if the enemy was a new model, the difference in numbers was 3 to 1. Giga and Zero couldn't lose in close-range combat. Ray charged for them. At that moment, a Seismo appeared from the river. Different from others. It was a Seismo armed with countless turrets that almost made it look like a hedgehog. Then, all at once the turrets ignited.
