The battle lines throughout various parts of the country, which had been deadlocked, now turned into a bloody battlefield as the Imperial Army launched their all-out offensive.
The Northern Thrym Highlands formed the roof of the Dark Continent, where the Muspel Mountain Range and the Yggdrasil Mountain Range met. It was a series of high mountains, 6,000 ~ 7,000 meters above sea level, and to the north was a barren desert. The Republic Headquarters had read that there'd be no large-scale enemy attack. The meager Republican Guard, composed of small-scale Zoids and five infantry divisions, was attacked by 7 Mountain divisions consisting of Iron Kongs, Saber Tigers, and Helcats. The difference in strength was obvious, but the Republic Headquarters, fearing that if the line was breached, their main forces would be caught from behind, ordered their defense forces to defend their position, even if it meant death. Two days later, when the main force arrived as reinforcements, 85% of the defenders had been destroyed.

ZAC 2101, Early October   |  Continent of Nyx   |  Bifrost Plains, Northern Front

The Republican Army deployed 25 divisions into the path of the Imperial Army, more than their 20 elite divisions which were launching from Chepin, a major military base on the Dark Continent. At the same time, they launched a fierce bombardment on the city. However, the Imperial Army's fighting spirit was so great that it advanced despite suffering losses in the excess of 20%. They tore through three of the five-layered defense formations set up by the Republican Army. At this point, the loss rates among the 20,000 troops was 40% for the Imperial Army and 30% for the Republican Army. The Imperial Army attempted to advance further, but was stopped by the Republic's reinforcements rushing in from Entrance Bay. Eleven days after the start of the battle, the two sides were once again deadlocked.

ZAC 2101, Early October   |  Continent of Nyx   |  Urd Lake Battle Results

During the foggy night, ten battalions from the Imperial Marine Forces landed on the opposite shore of Urd Lake to support the Imperial forces on the northern front of Bifrost Plain. They opened with a furious bombardment against the Republican camps. The Republican Army, which didn't have sufficient marine power, suffered severe damage from the surprise attack, and retreated just before dawn.

Ten days after the first raid, however, a night bombardment by the Republican Air Force dropped a large number of mines along the shores of Urd Lake. This cut off the enemy's retreat from their landing operation. On the same day, the Imperial troops on the northern front also halted their advance. Isolated on the southern shore of the lake, the marines continued to resist until 60% of all Zoids were destroyed, but ultimately, they surrendered at dawn on the same day when they ran out of ammunition.

ZAC 2101, Mid October   |  Continent of Nyx   |  Bifrost Plain, Southern Front

The Imperial Army set out from Maze Marsh, and Chaos Cape, southermost tip of the Dark Continent, advancing along the coastline in coordination with the Navy. They advanced south of the Bifrost Plain and directly attacked the Republican bridgehead at Entrance Bay. The Imperial Army had 15 army divisions and 5 naval squadrons. The Republican Army, on the other hand, consisted of 10 army divisions and 7 naval squadrons. At this time, the Republican Army, which had just sent reinforcements to the northernmost front of the plain and had temporarily exhausted their reserves, allowed the enemy to approach within 5 kilometers of their General Headquarters. The Republic managed to defend its headquarters with naval gunfire from the Ultra Saurus, but they lost a third of their beachhead. The battle continued with a loss of more than 30%.

ZAC 2101, Mid October   |  Continent of Nyx   |  Vigrid Plains Front

Vigrid Plains was a strategic point of transportation for the Imperial capital, Valhalla. The Imperial Army had deployed some 60 divisions there, including 15 elite armored divisions. They awaited the advance of the Republic's main forces. However, the Republic's main forces were aiming to advance from the southern route, through the Yggdrasil Mountain Range into the Vana Plain. In order to conceal their intentions, the Republican command dispatched 40 divisions of old Zoids, disguised as new models, to Vigrid Plain. They established a defensive position and set out on a mission to pin down the enemy's main forces.

However, the Imperial Army, which had received Prozen's command for an all-out attack, began an unexpected advance. In three days, the Republican Army had lost 30% of its strength, while the Imperial Army had only lost 5%, with the battle still continuing.

ZAC 2101, Mid October   |  Continent of Nyx   |  Vana Plain Front

50 Elite Divisions of the Republic's main forces advanced onto Vana Plain, where they encountered 15 divisions of the Imperial Army advancing from the opposite direction, an encounter that was unexpected by both sides. However, the Republic's main forces easily defeated the lightly armed Imperial troops, which consisted of mainly infantry units. They then moved on to to accomplish an astonishing 400 kilometer advance in three days. On the other hand, the Imperial Army, which had lost most of its overall power in the early stages of the war, rallied its main troops and built a defensive line on the opposite bank of the mighty river that flowed through Vana Plain, where they would hold off further advances by the Republican Army over the course of five days.

In the end, the Imperial garrison was annihilated. However, it bought valuable time for the main forces of Vigrid Plain to move on.

ZAC 2101, Late October   |  Continent of Nyx   |  Vana Plain ~ Sessrumnir

The Republic Command was faced with a major choice. Stop the main forces that had advanced into Vana Plain, or go straight to the imperial capital, Valhalla.

It was already late October. Even though the continent benefited from the geothermal heat of volcanic veins that ran to all four corners of the continent, this was still a land of the far north, the Dark Continent. For Republican soldiers who'd grown up on the warmer Central Continent, the unimaginably harsh winter was just around the corner. It was an icy world where even Zoids could freeze if they weren't equipped for cold-weather specifications.

According to the original plan, the advance would be haulted by the end of October. They were supposed to fortify the occupied areas and wait for the winter to pass before heading to Valhalla in the spring. However, there were now no enemies in sight in the Vana Plain, and the Imperial Capital was only 1,000 kilometers away. Considering the little time they had left, it wasn't an unreachable distance. Nor was it a necessarily safe bet to go on the defensive. The Imperial Army was mounting a furious counterattack on all fronts. There was no guarantee that the beachhead at Entrance Bay could be defended.

After much consideration from various perspectives, the Republic Command finally made a decision. The main forces were to advance on the Imperial City of Valhalla. Tens of thousands of Zoids roared as they marched eastward. After three days, they'd already cleared half of the route, but the next day, the situation suffered a drastic change: The main Imperial forces deployed on Vigrid Plain had moved out, and formed up in front of the Republic's main forces. Even though the Vana garrison of the Imperial Army had stalled for time, the speed of this advance was miraculous. The Empire was also desperate.

The decisive battle had begun. A full-out battle to settle the 50-year-long enmity that had continued since the old war. More than 100,000 Zoids and 2,000,000 soldiers from both armies had clashed amid air strikes and artillery fire.

In this unprecedented battle, which stretched over 100 kilometers, the most intense part of the fight was the urban battle of Sessrumnir.

The Death Saurer appeared. The Gojulas and Liger Zero fought bravely, but all counterattacks were futile in the face of the Death Dragons, which formed a concentrated force.
The Imperial Army held the northern half of Sessrumnir, and the Republican Army held the southern half. From there on, soldiers were falling by the hundreds for every meter they advanced. Suddenly, an unbelievable flash of light streaked across the gruesomely realistic battlefield. It was an energy beam, and it radiated heat beyond imagination. They saw the shine of the large-caliber Charged Particle Cannon. It was the Death Saurer.

Two Gojulas slammed into the Death Saurer from both sides. A brave, but reckless attack. In the past, a single Death Saurer alone had killed more than ten Gojulas. The Death Saurer tore away the right Gojulas with its claws, and threw the left Gojulas back with its tail. It was a single careless blow, and the 200-ton Gojulas was sent flying through the air. Its armor, which looked like a solid mass of heavy metal, had completely crumpled. It was like a bad joke. This time, the Liger Zeros moved forward. With the support of the Panzer's artillery, and the Schneider's charges. The laser blades flashed. Then they broke. The super-heavy armor that the Death Saurer boasted cracked open. The Schneider tried to push further, however, the second strike of the laser blade was never delivered. It was engulfed in a flash of light from behind, vaporizing the entire machine. The same flash as the particle cannon from before. The Republic's soldiers looked over their shoulders. It was another Death Saurer. Two, three, more. The Imperial Army had deployed a total of 30 Death Saurers to this battlefield.

Just as the Republican Army's front lines were about to collapse, the Mad Thunder, the God of Thunder, arrived on the battlefield.

Panic finally broke among the Republic's soldiers, who'd been desperately enduring their fear. Yet, just as the battle lines were about to collapse, the roar of another giant beast boomed from somewhere behind the Republican soldiers. It was the Mad Thunder. The Republic, too, had played its trump card, just in time for the decisive battle.

The Mad continued at a leisurely gait, closing the distance between it and the Death Saurer. The two huge horns began to spin at high speeds with a high-pitched growl.

- OFB4 Chapter 4: Fierce Battle

The Mad Thunder overwhelmed the Death Saurer in the old war. The legendary superweapon, the Magnezers, tore apart the super-heavy armor of the Death Saurer.

Suddenly, the Mad Thunder rushed forward. It was fast. Its instantaneous dashing power was unimaginable for its huge body. It aimed its horns, which had increased in rotational speed, right for the Death Saurer's throat. The Death Saurer intercepted with a swing of its arm. These were the same claws that the demon had used to crumple the Gojulas. Yet, they vanished the moment they made contact with the horns. The Death Saurer screamed and fell backwards.

The Mad Thunder was a Zoid that was specialized for this fight, developed for use against the Death Saurer during the late Central Continent War. It had armor that wouldn't be shaken against any blow and a shield that could withstand continuous irradiation from the Large-Calibre Charged Particle Cannon. It was the Zoid that had led the former Zenebas Empire to collapse.

Like many giant Zoids, this massive beast had been driven to the brink of extinction by the Grand Catastrophe of Planet Zi, but now, 50 years later, it had returned to the battlefield. Each of the 20 machines deployed on the Vana Plain pursued the Death Saurers in the same way they had during the battles of those distant days.

One of the Death Saurers let out a tremendous roar. It was a roar of anger, but also of joy at meeting its nemesis once again.

The fan on the back of the Death Saurer spun furiously, showering the gathered charged particles it had absorbed over the Mad Thunder, which continued to chase after it with the Magnezers over its head. It was an all-out attack. The Mad Thunder's shield managed to catch it. However, the Death Saurer continued to fire regardless.

5 seconds... 10 seconds... over 15 seconds. Even for the Death Saurer, this should've been its limit. The intake fan on its back began to burn out.

- OFB4 Chapter 4: Fierce Battle

The power of the Death Saurer's Charged Particle Cannon exceeded the Republic Development Team's projections, and the Mad Thunder's shields went down. One of the Magnezers melted away

20 seconds. Mad Thunder was the first to cry out. Unable to withstand the high temperatures of the continuous fire, its shields went down. Immediately, one of the Magnezers melted away, clear down to the base.

It was a miscalculation on the part of the Republic's Development team. The Mad Thunder's revival had been achieved by cultivating and propagating the few remaining juvenile Zoid Cores, which were slightly weaker than those from 50 years ago. On the other hand, the Death Saurer, which had been revived through the application of the Organoid System, had a noticeably improved power output, despite some problems with maneuverability and the like. The overwhelming difference in combat power that had existed between the two had disappeared.

The Death Saurer, on the verge of overheating, no longer had the strength to fire its Charged Particle Cannon. It was down to close-range combat. In a rush of wind, it attacked the Mad Thunder. Its remaining right arm slammed into the vicinity of the remaining shield, which was about to melt.

König Wolf's desperate charge gave the Mad Thunder the chance to turn the tables.
One blow. Then another. This time, it was the Mad Thunder's turn to roll over. The Death Saurer tried to follow up with another blow. At that moment, a König Wolf intervened between the two. While most of the soldiers stared frozen at the battle between these two monsters, one brave pilot, who shall remain nameless, plowed right into the Death Saurer's nose with the Smoke Chargers at full blast.

The smoke lingered. A brief moment of darkness. That split second was the difference between victory and defeat. The Death Saurer was knocked unconscious by the König, and the Mad Thunder quickly fired up its one remaining Magnezer. It thrust it through to the other side of the smoke. A response. It'd made contact with the neck. Sparks were flying. There was resistance from the hardest front armor. It pushed further. The armor gave way. The Death Saurer, pierced through the throat, gave out a roar of despair as it slowly crumpled to the ground.

- OFB4 Chapter 4: Fierce Battle

The Imperial transport ship, the Whale Kaiser, and the Republic's transport ship, the Turtleship, flew in from the northwest.
The sound of artillery fire roared across the Vana Plain for the next five days, never ceasing. The deadly battle between the two giant beasts in the city of Sessrumnir also continued during those five days.

It was only a small episode in the vast battlefield as a whole. This battle was beyond the scale where a handful of giant Zoids could control the battlefield (in fact, by the third day, the 50 beasts, the Death Saurers and Mad Thunders that were deployed in the battle were all moderately to severely damaged, rendering them incapable of fighting.)

If not for the arrival of messengers from the northwest on the morning of the sixth day, both armies would have disappeared from the world.

- OFB4 Chapter 4: Fierce Battle

Schwarz, who'd rushed in with his beloved Iron Kong to replace the destroyed Saber Tiger, was speechless at the extent of the damage on the battlefield.

Messengers from the northwest. It was Schwarz and Hermann, who'd been attacked by the Liger Zero X at the Thrym Highland's frontline base.

Schwarz wasn't yet in any condition to be moving around. However, without Hermann and Schwarz acting together, it would've been impossible to immediately withdraw troops from both sides.

"We have to end this futile war."

It was this single-minded determination that drove him to the frontlines, where there was a radio blockade already in place.

The battlefield was a bewildering place, with the sound of gunfire diminishing little by little. Looking back, he saw nothing but ruins and corpses.

In just five days of fighting, both armies had suffered a combined 120,000 casualties. More than five times as many were injured. Over 40,000 combat Zoids had also been reduced to nothing but scrap iron.

The damage was horrendous. Who would've thought that this, or rather, the countless lives lost in the battle over the last two years or so, would be due to the ambitions of a single man...

Schwarz gritted his teeth, forgetting his own wounds. He blamed himself for having remained silent throughout his military career, even though he'd been dimly aware of the darkness of Prozen's heart.

Prozen, again making the first move, attacked the Imperial City of Valhalla with the PK Division.
"But, this is the end—"

The battle between Guylos and Helic would end this day. Together, they would defeat Prozen and establish true peace on this planet.

However, a message had come immediately afterward that shocked him. It was from a confidant he'd sent to Valhalla. A special unit sent to help Emperor Rudolph escape from the Imperial City controlled by Prozen. Their sorrowful voice spoke up.

"Regent Prozen has started a rebellion in the Imperial capital."
