- History

Revival, Episode 1

Bang's Shield Liger was found in the Elemia Desert, its registration having been deleted 20 years prior, implying that it'd been wrecked and abandoned after the old war. The cockpit was broken out when it was found. It's worth noting that other Zoids throughout the series turn to gray stone upon their death, but this unit retained its color, even in its destroyed state, implying it may not have been fully dead and simply been too injured to recover.

When Bang discovered the small Organoid 'Sieg' while being pursued by bandits, the Organoid knew their only chance was to get to a Zoid, so it took Bang and flew out of the ruin. It dropped him in the cockpit then fused to the Shield Liger, instantly reviving it. The Liger was restored to full fighting condition, and was able to handle the bandits from there.

* This is a shortened version of the dedicated anime profile.

Bandit Battle, Episode 2

Bang once again ran into the bandits when they attacked his village, trying to capture Sieg. After his sister was taken hostage, the villagers offered to trade the Organoid for Maria. The bandits reneged on their deal, and Bang charged them with the Liger. He found the Zoid difficult to control, being slower and no longer having access to its missiles. It wasn't until Sieg was able to get back up and fuse to the Liger that it regained its full capabilities, and took down the bandit Redler.

Sabotage Mission, Episode 6 ~ 7

The group was in trouble with the Republic after destroying some of their sleeper Guysacks. They ultimately made a deal with the Republic to continue Moonbay's original transport mission for the Empire. She would use this as an excuse to get to Fire Bridge, a vital access point to where the Republic and Empire were currently at a stand off, then detonate the bridge to buy the Republic some time. This was simple in theory, but when the bomb failed to detonate Bang had to help to destroy the bridge.

The Saber Tiger, Episode 12

After being helped by a young boy, Raven, Bang was shocked to realize he was a vicious Imperial Zoid pilot who'd taken out countless Zoids around the village. When the Republic came to confront him, he turned and began slaughtering their Zoids. Bang tried to intervene, but was defeated by the far-more experienced pilot. He was saved first by Irvine, and ultimately by Raven being called away from the battlefield.

Rematch, Episode 13

Bang began preparing for a rematch, convinced he'd do better the second time. This battle went terribly sideways, however. Bang still wasn't a good enough pilot to defeat Raven. His Shield Liger sustained heavy damage and Sieg, his Organoid, almost died for his hubris.

Rescue, Episode 15

After the Shield Liger was up and running, Bang went to find Irvine, who was at a base currently being attacked by the Empire. He arrived just in time to see him falling, along with a substantial amount of rubble from the base. His Shield Liger caught Irvine just in time, using its Energy Shield to protect them from the debris. It was the first time the Shield Liger was able to use its shield without Sieg.

Battle for the Republic, Episode 17 ~ 18

While Bang was trying to get Hermann, who'd been stranded back to the Republic he came to a base that was being destroyed. Raven's Saber Tiger was there, and once again the two Zoids faced off. Only, this time, Bang had the advice of a seasoned Zoid pilot. He fared much better, but the battle was interrupted when the camouflaged battleships began firing on the shoreline.

After dropping Hermann off, Bang headed up the slopes of Mt. Ossa. At the summit he found Raven, just about ready to kill Moonbay and Fine. He challenged Raven to another battle, only this time, Raven tried to launch his Saber Tiger through the Shield Liger's shield. It tore the Saber's armor apart, eventually breaking the Zoid down so badly that its head simply crumbled to pieces while Raven and Shadow bailed out of the cockpit.

The Geno Saurer, Episode 21

After Bang's group had taken in Rudolph they were attacked by Raven's Geno Saurer. It didn't take long in this battle for them to realize just how terrifying the Zoid was. While Rosso and Viola stayed behind in an Iron Kong, distracting him, the rest of the group escaped, fully aware that they might be leaving them to die.

The Final Battle, Episode 22

Not long before the Shield Liger's final battle, it'd been used as the training Zoid to help teach the young prince, Rudolph, how to pilot a Zoid. This kind-hearted endeavor quickly turned dark when later, Rudolph was kidnapped by Raven. He only wanted to use him as a pawn to draw Bang back into a battle.

Having no other choice, Bang sought out the Geno Saurer. He tried his best to fight but was quickly snared by its cable claws and thrown around. Once he escaped its onslaught of attacks he prepared to use the energy shield, as he had against Raven's Saber Tiger. Only, the particle cannon of the Geno Saurer was an entirely new weapon that he only had a vague understanding of. He overestimated his shield, and it shattered when struck by the particle cannon. The Shield Liger was shot straight through the Zoid Core, nearly killing Sieg and ending the life of the Liger. Sieg was able to escape the Liger just in time to save Bang, but could not save his Zoid.

From here, Bang's Shield Liger's story continues as the Blade Liger.

In The Republican Army

Defense of New Helic City, Episode 59

Though Bang's Shield Liger died to Raven's Geno Saurer, Shield Ligers of the same color scheme would appear later. One such Shield Liger was piloted by Rob Hermann in the defense of New Helic City. Though nobody could damage the Death Stinger with its Energy Shield active, Hermann came up with the idea of pitting E-Shield against E-Shield.

He called for Schwarz to follow him in his Saber Tiger and charged the Death Stinger. When they clashed, the frequencies of the shields conflicted with each other. Both shields shut down. Though Hermann's Shield Liger was immediately shot down, Schwarz was able to jump over it and landed some hits, even if it was caught in the process. This bought enough time for the Defense Forces to arrive, even if they were unable to defeat the Death Stinger.

- Notable Details

  • Bang's Shield Liger, though revived to a fighting state, was not seemingly fully capable following its revival. In Episode 2, it was noted to be both slower and unable to fire the missiles. This was later implied to be because Bang needed Sieg to operate the combat system. It wasn't until Episode 18, when Bang was able to use the shield even without Sieg's help, that he really seemed to have been able to figure out the Liger's full potential. It's unclear if that was due to physical limitations after its revival or just that he finally learned to hit the 'on' button, but I'd guess a mix of both given all the factors.
  • Bang's Shield Liger has one of the few cases in this series where a Zoid acts independently, following after him, Fine, and Sieg in Episode 3 with no pilot or Organoid on board.
  • The Shield Liger BS has the same stats as the standard Shield Liger, but it should technically have shorter length due to the absence of a tail gun.

- Equipment Information

- Energy Shield Generator

Energy Shield Generator エネルギーシールド発生装置

The anime has its own way of portraying energy shields. Instead of a rippling effect, the shield shows as a physical barrier between the Zoid and its enemy. In this portrayal, the shield generators and mane flash gold when the shield is activated and it begins establishing different planes of the energy field until they solidify into a large dome barrier. This wraps around the top and sides, and are most heavily focused at the front.

The anime also introduces additional limitations and factors for the E-Shields. For example, they can be deactivated by ramming them into another E-Shield. This is used to deactivate an opponent's shield, even if it's far more powerful, by sacrificing your own. The shield also seems to burn away anything that's between the Zoid and the interior of the shield at the time of activation, with such force that it can even rip a Zoid's armor apart, such as what happened with Raven's Saber Tiger RS.
