The Madthunder is one of the greatest power houses of the Helic Republic. It was largely considered to be what carried the Republic to victory in the Old War, and still stands as a sentinel to protect against the spread of Death Saurers to this day.  [1]

- Details of Design

Cockpit - Main

The primary pilot of the Mad Thunder sits in the head cockpit. This is located between the two Magnezers, with an incredibly thick armor hatch over their head. The hatch rotates from the middle, flipping upwards to reveal the pilot.

Cockpit - Operational Headquarters

The Madthunder has an operational headquarters located in its upper back. The orange glass in its armor provides a view of the battlefield for those inside, and thick metal armor makes up the ceiling. When the center canopy needs to open, the Shock Cannons roll off the right side and a large metal bay door opens up. The control room seats three operatives who help monitor the combat situation, though their precise roles aren't mentioned.

- Military History

ZAC 2099, Reintroduction

After the Grand Catastrophe, Madthunders, like many others of the giant species were driven to near extinction. When the Republic heard of the Guylos Empire's plan to revive the Death Saurer, 50 years after this catastrophe, they made the decision to revive the Madthunder. However, few remained. They cultivated the cores of the juveniles after they'd had time to grow, even though they were weaker than the Madthunders from the Old War.

ZAC 2101, October, Second Rollout

At the Vana Plain, the Republican Army was presented with an unusual choice. Their original plan had been to fortify their position and wait out the harsh winters of Nyx, which would be devastating to Zoid and soldier alike, then mobilize again in the spring. However, Vana Plain wasn't nearly as well guarded as they'd anticipated, and with Valhalla only 1,000 kilometers away, they made the bold choice to march on.

In the battle of Sessrumnir, a fierce fight dropping hundreds of soldiers for every meter of ground gained, the terrifying Death Saurer once more appeared on the war grounds. This time, 30 in total, an impossible number. That is, until 20 Madthunders were marched out alongside them. The Madthunder had nearly fallen to extinction alongside many other giants during the Grand Catastrophe of Planet Zi, and was only now being sent back out to the battlefield.

Though the Madthunder had held an overwhelming advantage in the past, this time around, the Zoids released on the field had been propogated from the few remaining cores, and were slightly weaker than their predecessors. With combat power now equal, the battle turned bloody fast. Within three days, all of the giant Zoids on the field, all 30 Death Saurers and 20 Madthunders, were rendered unable to fight. Even so, the scope of the battle of Sessrumnir was so vast that this still wasn't the end of the fighting. Both armies would have fallen had Schwarz and Hermann not arrived to warn them that this had all been by Prozen's grand design. Soon after, it was reported that he had started a rebellion in Valhalla, the Imperial capital, and both armies marched on to defend it.

- Notable Facts

  • Madthunder's Magnezer technology was later passed on to other Zoids. The Berserk Führer uses it for the Buster Blades, for example.

  • The Madthunder was designed by Herbert Lee Chester (in-universe), who also designed the Ultrasaurus.

- Equipment Information

- 2-Barrelled Large-Calibre Shock Cannon

2-Barrelled Large-Calibre Shock Cannon: 2連大口径衝撃砲×1

This gun is the Madthunder's secondary weapon, installed to the back and able to rotate 360 degrees. The weapon also leans off the right side, making room for the cockpit hatch to open, revealing a control room with several pilots.

- 2-Barrelled Shotgun x1

2-Barrelled Shotgun x1: 2連装ショットガン×1

This small two-barrelled weapon is installed to the chest. Not much is known about its function.

- Anti-Charged Particle Shield x1

Anti-Charged Particle Shield x1: 反荷電粒子シールド×1

Perhaps the Madthunder's most important equipment item. For the Zoid developed to slay Death Saurers, this shield was designed to soak damage from charged particles using ceramic oscillators to nullify the particles. The shields can withstand roughly 20 seconds of non-stop fire.

- Beam Cannon x2

Beam Cannon x2: ビームキャノン×2

The Beam Cannons, a design shared with the Shield Liger MK-II are stationed on the lower back. They can rotate up and down by a considerable distance, allowing them to target enemies in the sky. The cannons can fire energy shots that are strong enough to take out medium-scale opponents. [2]

- Hyper Rolling Charger x1

Hyper Rolling Charger x1: ハイパーローリングチャージャー×1

The Hyper Rolling Charger is a huge turbine built into the lower back. This serves as an energy generator that allows the Madthunder to continue to operate behind enemy lines without needing to return for refueling.

- Laser Searcher x2

Laser Searcher x2: レーザーサーチャー×2

The Laser Searcher is installed to the left shoulder. According to School Grade Magazine, it functions as a searchlight to detect enemy Zoids. In real life, laser searchers are used to detect infrared light, giving early alert to the presence of a potential enemy.

- Magnezer x2

Magnezer x2: マグネーザー×2

These mighty weapons of the Madthunder are Magnezers, which spin at rapid speed, generating energy that allows them to pierce even the Death Saurer's super-thick armor. When in use, they glow and sometimes spiral with energy, depending on the media. Against particularly powerful enemies it uses its special move, the Thunder Crash, to charge the Magnezers, Shield, and Thunder Horn, then rams the enemy with incredible force. Many times throughout history, it is these weapons that have been used to slay the Death Saurers of the Empire.

- Quadrupel Beam Gun

Quadrupel Beam Gun: 4遇ビーム砲×1

This is installed to the tip of the tail. As the name implies, it fires energy shots and is able to rotate 360 degrees. It's used to target not just small-scale Zoids but also those in the air. [2]

- Radar x1

Radar x1: レーダー×1

The radar sits above the control center and is able to spin 360 degrees, feeding information to the pilots inside. It doesn't get much coverage, so its exact effects are unknown.

- Thunder Horn x1

Thunder Horn x1: サンダーホーン×1

The Thunder Horn sits on the nose, and charges with energy during the Thunder Crash. It's one of the many weapons used to impale targets who risk getting too close.
