- Notable Facts

  • With Zoids' many war references, the Wild Weasel Unit may be a reference to the code name given by the United States Air Force to any aircraft equipped with anti-radiation missiles, which home in on enemy radio emission sources. This means the aircrafts would bait enemies into targeting them, then fire missiles that can track that radar signature back to its source, destroying key targets in battle. For example, taking out anti-aircraft weapons to clear the way for allied aircrafts. This isn't just limited to detecting radar, either. They can also detect enemy jammers and radios as long as they can lock onto their signature.

As a fun little aside, the unofficial motto of these crews was "You Gotta Be Shittin Me", allegedly the response of veteran Jack Donovan after hearing that he'd be riding in an aircraft with the intention of being flypaper for enemy SAMs (Surface-to-Air Missiles.)

  • When the Zoids Chaotic Century/Guardian Force anime came out this Gun Sniper variant was referred to as the Weapon Rack Radome.

- Military History

ZAC 2100, July, Pursuit

After the reinforcements at Rob Base drove the Empire back, the imperial Zoids retreated in two different directions. Gun Sniper W2s joined the pursuit forces, chasing them down along the northern route. When they caught up the two armies fought, but during the course of the battle, the first Death Stinger, still in its experimental phase, was struck by a stray bullet. The Zoid went berserk, wiping out almost all Zoids involved in the fight.

ZAC 2100, October, New Type of Zoid

When the Republic began their invasion of Nyxie Base, Gun Sniper W2s followed their leader, Lieutenant Ray Gregg into the underground levels of the facility. They bypassed the Zoid hangars and instead went straight for the underground factories, pulling well ahead of other Republican forces. Ray held a strong grudge against the Empire for the damage caused by their rapid and sometimes reckless advancements in technology, and wanted to target their research facilities first and foremost.

At the lower levels they discovered two unknown types of Zoids, the first prototypes of the Berserk Führer and the Liger Zero. The Berserk Führer sprung to life, instantly taking out Ray's Shield Liger DCS-J, then continuing to tear apart three Gun Snipers in a single moment. The Gun Snipers were no match for its speed and agility and fell quickly while Ray went to capture the Liger.

- Equipment Information

- AZ 144 mm Twin Pulse Laser Gun x2

AZ 144 mm Twin Beam Gun x2 AZ144mm二連装パルスレーザーガン×2

The main weapons of the Gun Sniper W2 are the two weapon arms extending from either side. The unit consists of four clustered guns, with the top two shorter barrels being the Pulse Laser Gun. These fire energy rounds. A bit of an odd feature about this weapon is its ability to slide forwards or backwards. The arms are normally sloped towards the back when inactive, but can extend outwards and forwards from the body in combat.

- AZ 180 mm Twin Beam Gun x2

AZ 180 mm Twin Pulse Laser Gun x2 AZ180mm二連装ビームガン×2

The Beam Guns are part of the Wild Weasel Unit that extends to the sides. They're just below the Pulse Laser Guns, and share all the same articulation features as they do. The Gun Sniper is also unique in that this upgrade isn't treated as something it has to keep in battle. When Gun Snipers enter close-range combat they unburden themselves by throwing off their Weasel Units, taking advantage of the instant decrease in weight combined with their natural agility to take down close-range targets.

- Radome

Radome AZ180mm二連装ビームガン×2

The Radome is stationed on the back between the missile pods. It's connected to a large arm that's articulated with a hinge allowing for forwards and backwards movement at two points, the base and the attachment bar of the radome. This component includes a High-Performance Multi-Radar that not only offers early enemy detection abilities but also jams enemy electronic warfare functions. The radar functionality part is said to exceed the Gator's capabilities.

- Notes

1. All information, unless stated otherwise, is from the Official Fan Books (mostly Book 2.)

2. CP-13 Wild Weasel Unit package.

3. Main stats are from Zoids Legacy.

4. Different sources have different speed stats for the W2. Zoids Saga I (and its accompanying game guide) list it at 185 km/h. Saga II and later list it at 160 km/h. Kotobukiya lists the stat as 200 km/h (the same as the default Gun Sniper.) I've elected to list the main speed stat as the most up-to-date stat that doesn't just use the default Gun Sniper speed, so went with the later Saga game stats. Thanks to Falcarius for helping confirm these numbers and sources!

5. The discussion about the real-life Wild Weasel is from its Wikipedia page.
