Story Information
Pilots: Introduction:
  • Gallagher
Death Rex is an incredibly ferocious Zoid. It's said that when it senses other Zoids, it gets excited and goes on a rampage. It's also the only Zoid in Zoids Wild that is known to literally eat other Zoids, and in the anime was said to have caused a 50% decline in the Wild Zoid population. In the Zoids Wild worlds there is only one individual, but others are seen in Zoids Wild Zero.  [1]

- Details of Design

The Depths Of Death Rocky

Zoids Wild kits often come out before their debute in the anime, and some contain facts that may or may not contradict what happens in the show. For example, on Death Rex's official product info, it states that the Zoid was discovered within the magma of the large volcano, Death Rocky, but that it wasn't melted at all. This is an interesting conflict, because in the anime, the Death Rex is thrown into the mouth of a volcano and presumed dead. It seems clear that the anime intended the Zoid not to survive, and likely went with a theatrical end over following a single sentence from the box lore.

- Concept Art

Early Prototype

When Zoids Wild held its first press conference there were some designs that hadn't yet been finalized. This included an early prototype of the Death Rex, which was displayed on a diorama featuring numerous other Zoids. This model was radically different from the final result that we got. It's more than possible that this was just a quick printout of whatever 3D concept they had so far, for the sake of the event. A silhouette during the anime segment also included a much different design, with a slightly different character design for Gallagher as well.

- Military History

Zoids Wild, Gallagher

The Death Rex's campaign began when it was excavated by the Death Metal Empire. Although Gallagher was ecstatic to have this Zoid, its violent tendencies still necessitated that Death Rex be confined in chains and cages for most of its stay. Only occasionally was the Zoid released, usually to deal with opponents. Even with this goal in mind, it was seen turning against ally Zoids and consuming easy targets, with no protest from Gallagher. To keep up with its food demands Gallagher often sent out his flunkies to round up raptors (as many as 100) and other low-tier Zoids to feed it, and also fed the Zoid with enemies that had been conquered.

- Equipment Information

- Crusher Claw

Crusher Claw: クラッシュクロー

The claws on Death Rex's feet are unusually pointed compared to most rex-type Zoids, and with this monstrous unit weighing three times as much as medium-scale Wild Zoids, they're a real threat. The anime depicts Death Rex being able to balance on a single leg long enough to punt the Fangtiger, meaning kicking attacks are possible.

- Death Jaws

Death Jaws: デスジョーズ

These massive weapons are used for Death Rex's Death Blast. They normally remain stationary at its side, covering almost its entire flank. When the Death Blast activates, they rotate forward, snapping closed in front of the Death Rex's face. This traps enemy Zoids (or even suspends them in the air) while the Uvula Drill digs its way through their armor. The nature of the attack makes them very difficult to escape.

- Kaiser Tail

Kaiser Tail: カイザーテイル

Being a tyrannosaur, Death Rex has a thick and well-armored tail, perfect for bashing enemies. Although it has a visible blade at the tip of the tail, this is never seen being actively used in the anime.

- Large Jaws

Large Jaws: 大顎

Death Rex's jaws are lined with jagged teeth. It has an impressive bite force, able to completely sever through weaker Zoids. With the Rex's natural strength, it can lift a medium-size Zoid like a Liger off of the ground and slowly crush them between its teeth. Death Rex is also one of the few Zoids known to actively eat other Zoids, so these weapons undoubtedly see frequent use.

- Radiation Wing

Radiation Wing: 放熱ウイング

The Radiation Wings are hidden beneath the Death Rex's back armor. During its Death Blast they open up, presumeably to vent heat, though they don't really get special focus in the series. A second Death Blast animation was actually used later into the series that better highlighted this feature, and the spiky appearance it gives the silhouette.

- Uvula Drill

Uvula Drill: ウブラドリル

Named after that dangly bit in the back of your throat. It's usually completely hidden inside the neck of the Death Rex. During the Death Blast, however, the weapon extends and spins rapidly, drilling into the opponent. Usually, the target is helplessly snared in the Death Jaws during this process.
