 Masakuni is a loud man with a booming laugh, well respected as a blacksmith able to craft Metal Zi weapons for Zoids. He's perhaps one of the most prominent presences in Midori's story, a key character who watches from outside her immediate circle with great concern.  [1]

Interlude, Battle of Kanan Fort

When Bio Zoids first appeared in the world again, they approached Kanan Fort. Masakuni, who was at the fort to deliver some repaired weapons joined the battle to protect the people, but at the time they had little access to Metal-Zi. For a while they held the Bio Zoids back, but when he witnessed Hiou, the sacred Zoid of the capital running towards the fort, he left the gates to defend them. Together with Hiou they were able to fend off the Bio Zoids until Gishin, Seki's teacher arrived with reinforcements from the capital. Once they'd arrived, countless voices came through the intercoms, all echoing the same eerie words. "Look at the sky." Masakuni and his comrades witnessed an absurd number of flying Bio Zoids, all heading right for the capital.


Interlude, Battle of the Capital

As soon as reinforcements arrived, countless Bio Zoids flew towards the capital. All along they'd waited for Hiou, the city's guardian deity to leave the city, and now it had. Though Seki tried to return, Masakuni and the Iron Kong restrained her Zoid, until she pleaded her case, claiming that Hiou was the only one who could protect the city. Reluctantly, the group decided to allow this. As they reached Nakato every Zoid had to take part in the fighting, carving a path to the sacred stage. The Iron Kong protected their rear, while Gishin and his Rez Wolf charged at the front. Though they succeeded in getting Hiou to the stage, where it was able to perform a ritual dance and purify (destroy) the Bio Zoids currently plaguing the city, Gishin took fatal damage and many of their allies were lost in the fight. This battle would stay fresh in Masakuni's mind for many years to come, and he would later tell Jin about his father, Gishin's, bravery during the battle, praising him for the masterful fighter he was.


Chapter 2, Crafting

When Ken and Midori delivered a letter from Lord Hakukuu, requesting (unbeknownst to either of them) that he test Midori in combat to learn her aptitude in battle he turned and attacked both Zoids. Midori's liger was fast and agile, and even led to their victory by pinning down his Iron Kong's hammer. At a loss with Ken's lance at his throat, he introduced himself properly and took them to his work shop, where Zoids manned the forge to craft new weapons for their brethren. There they waited for several days as he crafted new Metal-Zi weapons for the Hound Soldier and Souga. He even passed down an armor that'd been in his village for generations, giving it to Midori for Souga to use.


Chapter 7 ~ 8, The Final Battle

As Zoids gathered at the base of the volcano, preparing to take their final stand the following day Masakuni enjoyed one last drink with his friends. He spoke to Jin of his father, Gishin, his bravery, and of the battle that is implied to have claimed his life. When the time came for the Zoids to enter the volcano, Masakuni soon followed. He witnessed the heat ray that sent Midori's group flying like ragdolls, and caught Souga, stopping the Zoid's roll. He confessed that as a blacksmith, he wanted to witness the battle of the seal, to see with his own eyes what the Sealing Sword was, along with the Shining Beast's "Shiro Shouzoku" armor.

- Zoids

Iron Kong

 
 Masakuni's Iron Kong is a mighty forge Zoid, customized with a mask and special forge hammer that he uses to make Metal-Zi Weapons. This isn't its only purpose, however. The Iron Kong is more than capable of smashing enemies to pieces with its forge hammer and doesn't hesitate to jump into active battle when required.
