- Abyss of the Devil
- Introduction
The Abyss of the Devil is a particular part of the ocean floor mentioned in the Zoids anime, where methane hydrate under extreme pressure combines with water to form what looks like ice. This "Fire Ice" ignites fairly easily, especially if disturbed by environmental changes and explodes when it comes into contact with Zoids. These explosions are so powerful they can destroy some Zoids.

The Death Stinger, Episode 1
The Republican Army realized that they were entering the Abyss of the Devil when one of their reconnaissance Hammer Heads was destroyed. It had disturbed the environment surrounding the ice and was caught off guard when it started to erupt. With the Death Stinger in hot pursuit they decided to bank on the notion of driving the Ultra Saurus directly into the methane fields. When the Death Stinger eventually caught up and started tearing through the hull, they released depth charges and intentionally detonated the ice. The explosions dislodged and disoriented the Death Stinger, allowing the Ultra Saurus to make another sea escape.
