RMZ-002 Geno Saurer
Design Concept Sketches
RMZ-002 Geno Saurer
The new Geno Saurer is the first refined version since the moving kit released in 2000, with improved resolution and appeal that only an action plastic model kit can offer.
The cold-blooded genes have been inherited.
While following the design of the kit originally released in 2000, its range of motion and proportions have been carefully reconsidered, taking into account the flow from its head to tail, which is unique to bipedal dinosaurs. The impressive tail section, which opens during the Charged Particle Cannon firing state is reflected in the design as a realistic addition that complements the visuals from the anime.

RMZ-002 Geno Saurer Review
Introduction
The RMZ-002 Geno Saurer is the second in the Realize Model series, following the
Blade Liger. I discussed a lot of my thoughts on the RMZ line in the Bladey review, but want to take a moment to praise just how ingenuitive the Geno Saurer is. The articulation achieved in the tail of this Zoid is what every person who's ever articulated a moto themselves has wished for. The movements of the Geno Saurer are so fluid and dynamic that it stands out against all other rex Zoids released. I also feel like it has some of the best proportions that we've seen.
It does have its limitations, however. I've said this before, but therapod-style legs are just bad toy design. Having all your weight hanging diagonally off of a joint is a nightmare for suspension, and far more limiting than quadrupeds, where the weight is distributed more evenly. Like other poseable rexes, the Geno Saurer likes to flip forwards at many angles. Especially at the toes and knees. My best piece of advice for this is to pay attention to how the joints themselves are positioned. If it keeps falling, you may notice that you've got the joints leaning way too far to one side. Keep them under the center of gravity, and deploy the anchors for added stability.
That whole paragraph may imply that the Geno Saurer is a floppy mess, but it's really not. As far as rexes go, it's still really stable. I have no issues displaying it in dynamic poses, they just can't be
too dramatic. The kit's pre-painted parts (the silver and eyes of the head) are also crisp and well-done. The rich black color of the armor is also a nice bonus. Most black-armored kits are lighter toned than this.
Pros
- Possibly the best articulation of any rex Zoid released to date
- Numerous option and effect parts included
- Detailed tail vents with easy-to-open design
- High-quality plastic with sharply molded details
- More space and cost friendly than larger kits
- Box and instructions include English translations for international fans
- Includes anime-specific Raven pilot as well as generic soldier pilot
Cons
- Thin casted parts such as the claws are easy to bend
- Toes and leg joints can give under the weight if not posed correctly
- Over-reliance on PC parts which may not age well
- Not able to have the particle barrel straight forward during the CPC charging pose
Thinly Molded Pieces
RMZ kits are happp to offer sharp stabby teefs, blades, effect parts, and claws. Unfortunately, some of the softer plastic colors like white and silver can bend because of just how sharp the pieces are molded. If you've ever built the MSS cats, you'll know what I'm talking about. Take extra care when assembling or moving parts and make sure you aren't accidentally pressing on the tips of the claws.
The Build Process
Geno Saurer has an incredibly smooth build compared to its earlier kit predecessors. All pieces that normally give you a headache such as the lense, pipes, etc. slot in with ease. There are still some pretty tiny pieces, such as the shoulder vents, but those are still easy to place. The only thing I didn't enjoy about the build process is that the sharply-molded details dig into your skin when trying to push pieces together, especially around the tail.

Comparison Shots
The RMZ Geno next to the HMM Geno Saurer Raven Version. Ignore that his guns are missing, I moved a while back and haven't unpacked his guns yet. I quite like both tail gimmicks. The functionality of RMZ's tail vents are better, but I like the design of the HMM Geno with the smaller plates.
The last two images show it next to the old Tomy motorized Geno Saurer Holotech. The motor has quite a bit more bulk, design wise, but it actually shows just how far the design aesthetic has come over the years. I like the more streamlined appearance of the RMZ while retaining the overall proportions.
Effect Parts
Geno Saurer comes with a good view effect parts, including a Charged Particle charging orb and gun fire effects for the Pulse Laser Rifles. The parts are cast in clear colorless plastic, and are actually UV reactive!
(I'll add photos of this... eventually-)
When you want to swap in the orb effect part, you can pull the standard CPC barrel straight out, then press the extended one in. The teeth are a bit sharp so it may be easier to wrap a cloth around the piece (to avoid marks in the plastic) and pull it out with plyers. The orb then presses onto the barrel. The gun effect parts also press straight onto the barrels.
One of the things I actually appreciated about this kit is that
all of its option parts can be pulled off post-assembly. I'd have loved to see an extra PC part included in the Blade Liger to handle the forwards-backwards rotation of the E-Shield generator so that the piece itself could be a peg that'd pull in and out, because not having to disassemble the kit in any capacity to swap parts really adds to the fun of having options.

Gimmicks
- Jaw
The jaw opens and closes.
- Charged Particle Cannon
The Charged Particle Cannon is on a hinge, so it can be raised against the roof of the mouth where it's mostly out of the way when not being used.
- Replaceable Head Parts
The Geno Saurer includes two different head guns. One for the mass-production version, seen in the first image, and one for the Raven-specific machine.
- Head & Neck Articulation
The head can rotate up, down, left, and right.
- Neck Articulation
The neck's also able to rotate left and right.
- Neck Panels
The neck panels can all be opened up for the Charged Particle Firing sequence.
- Cockpit
The cockpit of the Geno Saurer, located in the chest, still opens up to reveal the 1/100 scale pilot. A peg in the pilot seat secures the pilot in place, making sure they're not rattling around loose inside the cockpit like Genos of old.
- Body Articulation
A joint behind the chest allows the body to rotate left, right, up, and down. This actually adds a lot to the overall flow of posing.
- Arm Articulation
The arms are attached to ball joints. These joints are set in a rather shallow socket, however, so they fall off pretty easily when posing. The elbows rotate forwards and backwards as well.
- Hand Articulation
The hands are attached on a peg that allows them to rotate 360 degrees. The claws also have the standard articulation, able to open up or fold.
- Leg Articulation
The legs are articulated in several different places. Aside from being attached to ball joints for the body connection they've also got forwards-backwards articulation in the knee, heel, and ankle. The first image shows the legs fully folded up, and the second fully extended. Third and fourth image show the knee, and the next two the heel. Two after that, the ankle.
- Foot Articulation
The toes can rotate pretty far forwards and backwards, allowing for some nice transitions from the leg without it looking broken or unnatural. Unfortunately, they don't hold tension well, so the Geno will fall forward if relying on the toes alone for balance. The feet are also attached to pegs so they can rotate to stand flat on the ground even when the leg is slanted.
- Anchors
The anchors used to stabilize the Zoid during the Charged Particle Cannon firing sequence are able to be deployed backwards. They're actually quite useful for stabilizing the kit, too, allowing for a wider range of poses.
- Thruster Hatch
The armor plate over the leg thrusters can rotate up and down a bit, though it's a bit stiff.
- Long Range Pulse Laser Rifle
The Long Range Pulse Laser Rifles can rotate up or down, and swivel 360 degrees. When tilted upwards, the backs of the guns bump against other parts, but the range of movement is still pretty good.
- Heat Dissipation Fins
The heat dissipation fins open up along the tail to vent extra heat during the Charged Particle Cannon firing process. The purple detailing really makes this part stand out, and the little upwards-slanted ridges molded into the sides of each panel make these pieces so easy to open.
- Tail Articulation
Perhaps the most impressive articulation of any rex kit, the tail is beautifully jointed. No matter the pose it looks fluid without obvious joints, and the way this bolsters almost all poses is amazing. It adds so much personality to the kit.
