- Original Japanese (Tomy) Release

This page is a catch-all for the era of Zoids best known in the west as the fan-coined term "OJR" or "Original Japanese Release". This refers to the original line of Zoids released in Japan between 1983 and 1990. There were a few different categories of kits released under this heading, and while some started out as separate categories (with separate designation numbers), the numbers are inconsistent, and some ultimately join together into a single linear numbering. We'll do our best to organize them.

For the moment this serves as a list of the Zoids from this era. We will eventually expand it to lore info.

MZ Series

One of the first groups to be released, this series consists of mostly small or medium-scale kits that used wind-up motors. It also contains many of the classic "white-head" Zoids, a term used by fans to describe Zoids with the classic "clam-shell" style cockpits.

PZ and BOZ Series

The PZ series consisted of battery-opperated Zoids. At the beginning, Empire and Republic Zoids were separate (for example, EPZ-001 Redhorn and RPZ-001 Salamander). After PZ-003 they started sharing the designation. The RBOZ series was mostly extra large Zoids such as the Gojulas. Its been theorized that they're separated based on battery types, however, neither PZ or BOZ are entirely consistent on which Zoids it includes, either by size or battery type. The BOZ series joined the PZ designation numbers starting with the RBOZ-008 Madthunder.

1/24 Series

The 1/24 series featured a variety of super small-scale Zoids released in 1/24 scale. This made them decently comparable in size to standard Zoids (at least in terms of the physical kits). At this scale, they also incorporated action figures of human pilots which were considerably larger than the 1/72 scale pilots.

Trans Fighter Zoids

This small batch of Zoids was designed to transform into additional weaponry. Each weapon had a connector piece that allowed it to be equipped to grade-up Zoids.

RTF-1 Shoteagle
RTF-2 Gorgolauncher
RTF-3 Thundercannon

Grade-UP Units

A few "Grade-Up Zoids" were released as part of the PZ series, designed to go with a series of motorized weapons known as the Grade-Up Units. For example, the Hyper Beam Gun for the Hound Soldier or Pulse Cannon for the Zeek Dober.

GU-03 Eye Flasher
GU-04 Wing Glider
