- History Of Shield Liger DCS-J

 - The Blue Wind of the Republic

In the Central Continent War between the Helic Republic and the Zenebas Empire, which began in ZAC 1980, the first ever assault combat Zoid, the Sabre Tiger (later called the Saber Tiger) developed by the Zenebas Empire led to the first arms race. The way that Zoids fought was entirely changed. Most of the Republican Zoids couldn't cope with the Sabre Tiger, which could engage in fighting battles while maintaining both high speed and high maneuverability.

The Republican Army, which was backed into a corner, thoroughly researched a Sabre Tiger that had been captured, and completed the Shield Liger, a high-speed fighting Zoid with the same body as the Sabre Tiger, only following a different design concept. The Shield Liger, which had seemingly contradictory abilities of high-speed fighting and defensive abilities by use of an energy shield, was more than a match for the Sabre Tiger, and prevented the Republican Army's front lines from collapsing.

 - MK-II Unit

At the end of the Central Continent War, the enhanced black tiger, the Great Sabre, suddenly appeared on the front lines, which at the time were an all-out battle of massive firepower. The nightmare of the Republican Forces had returned. In the mountainous region where super-large Zoids had difficulty evading, the onslaught of the Empire's strongest troops, which consisted mostly of Great Sabres, forced the Republican Army into a retreat, and it looked like the war situation was changing considerably.

However, the Republican Army immediately started carrying out improvements on the Shield Liger. They completed the new Shield Liger MK-II, which strengthened its shooting abilities, the main weak point of the unit, while sacrificing mobility. They named it the MK-II, and also carried out similar improvements for the Command Wolf and Bear Fighter. They placed these units on the front lines, and as they approached the Empire, they were able to push their army back once again. The Tiger of the Empire and the Lion of the Republic would continue to play an active role as rivals for a long time to come, until the end of the Intercontinental War and even the Western Continent War.

 - Double Cannon Special

In ZAC 2099, the Shield Liger was valued as the main Zoid of the Republican Army, during a time when large Zoids had decreased following the great catastrophe. However, as the Western Continent War against the Guylos Empire broke out, and the stalemate at the front lines required a wide range of forces, from fighting units to artillery battles, gaining versatility was important to form a proper response, and so the former Shield Liger MK-II was enhanced and its artillery abilities adjusted to become the Shield Liger DCS (Double Cannon Special). By deploying the DCS and normal Shield Liger in various ratios to the front lines, over and over again, they were able to compensate for each other's shortcomings and achieved great results.

 - Comprehensive Strengthening Plan

In ZAC 2100, the Republican Army had achieved great results by introducing the DCS to the front lines, but on an ever-intensifying battlefield, it became difficult to maintain the front lines due to a shortage of units. Therefore, in order to respond to all battlefield situations with a single Shield Liger, a plan was announced to forcibly increase its mobility, which had been reduced by installing the Beam Cannons, by increasing its output. As a result of major modifications made to the power engine, the maneuverability and acceleration increased, reaching top speeds of 285 km/h, which exceeded the normal Shield Liger.

Of course, that also resulted in the machine's balance suffering, and the deterioration of maneuverability due to the forced acceleration and the burden on the pilot caused by sudden braking exceeded a level that normal soldiers could handle for a general-purpose Zoid. As a result, only seven units were produced, and the plan was cancelled. This extremely sensitive unit was sent to the front lines in search of a pilot who could handle it, so that they might obtain actual combat data on its development for the next-generation machine.

 - The 7 Leomasters

The fully modified DCS improved the output of the beam cannons as well as its mobility, and aside from its handling difficulty, it was a force to be reckoned with. Therefore, the unit was handed over to the high-speed Zoids specialists active in each unit, who made minor adjustments to it and then put it out on the front lines. The seven individuals who could control the rampaging lions were called the Leomasters, and each had a different colored coat of arms. In order to bring out the color of the emblems, the unit was painted jet black, a jet black color that shined like a jewel when polished, and it was officially named the DCS-J (Double Cannon Special Jet).

The 7 great pilots were Arthur Borgmann (red emblem), Ray Gregg (blue emblem), Ceres Ardoise (purple emblem), Cicily Volta (pink emblem), Mizumo Tomii (green emblem), Amy Ishikawa (yellow emblem), and Judge Lyre (white emblem). The Seven Leomasters were each active on the front lines with their jet-black Ligers, and later changed Zoids every time a new Liger type was developed, but the lion coat of arms was transferred to each new unit, and the title of Leomaster became a legend that was passed down among the soldiers of the Republic.

- Box Art Concepts and Discussion

When Mercy is drawing a box art, they often draw up several pose concepts to bring to the team, who decides on which one works best for the product. In one of Kotobukiya's blog entries, we saw several concepts for the DCS-J, which we'll discuss below.

Image 1: Features the moment of breach when the Helic Republic charged into Nixie Base. This would've been a nice continuation of the Gun Sniper WW's box art, occuring seconds later as Ray Gregg (his DCS-J in the background of the WW art) catches up to where the WWs were on theirs.

Image 2: The concept ultimately chosen, features the moment when Ray Gregg rushed his platoon of only 10 Zoids into the depths of Nixie Base, furious after hearing that Arthur Borgmann, his comrade and teacher had died in battle. He was convinced that the tragedy was an extension of the Empire's greed, carried out through countless experiments (including the Death Stinger that killed Arthur) to find true power. In the depths of the base he reached the factory, and standing before him were two experimental machines. In front of those, he also saw a small Zoid, the 'interface' that would later be used to make a more perfected Organoid System. This DCS-J would be dead only seconds later.

Image 3: This scene features the same moment of the first, only shown from the front. It still references the Gun Sniper WW's box art, when they first enter the base, and gave a strong impression of the speed at which these Zoids were charging headlong into Nixie Base.

Image 4: Now this would've been an interesting scene. At the time that this concept was drawn up, Koto hadn't actually decided to release the Blade Liger AB yet. Rather than being aggressively chased by a Blade Liger, this box art would have exhibited training exercises. Only, this wasn't an exercise for the fleeing DCS-J. No, this would've been an exercise for the Blade Liger, whose pilot was just transitioning from the old DCS-J to a new state-of-the-art machine. Out of all of the concepts, I think this is the most thought-provoking. Knowing that that Blade Liger could be Arthur and that the DCS-J pilot could be Ray who would later lead the Liger to its death out of the pain of losing Arthur hits hard.

Image 5: Some of you may recognize this one! Image 5 would've been a shoutout to the box art of the old Tomy motorized Shield Liger DCS-J! It would've struck the same pose, featured in front of an endless blue sky.

- Extra Details

  •  The DCS-J marked the first release of a Double Cannon Set associated Shield Liger since the Shield Liger MK-II, which was released 11 years prior.
