- History of the Command Wolf
- Evolution in the Midst of Battle
* The Command Wolf Empire reuses segments of the Command Wolf's lore. These sections will be in italics.
The military conflict between the two major powers of Planet Zi, the Helic Republic and the Zenebas Empire, expanded with each passing day and later developed into the major conflict known as the Central Continent War. This spark of war spread to neighboring countries, and fierce battles were fought across various parts of the continent. The battlefield turned to a quagmire, with culture lost day by day, as well as many lives.
Something was born in the flames of that war, something that has never stopped evolving. It was the mechanical organisms known as Zoids. Zoids is a generic name for the battle beasts that've been artificially modified and armed from the metal life forms that inhabit Planet Zi. Regardless of the Zoid's will, they've become the strongest weapons over a relatively short period of time in battle by heavily arming them and repeatedly increasing their capacity and size. Having evolved from metal life forms to bio-weapons, Zoids have taken their place as the main weapons of war and now run across all battlefields on Planet Zi. Those "battlefields" are now the natural habitat of Zoids.
- The Birth of the Command Wolf
Project W was a development plan for a wolf-type combat Zoid that was started at the same time as Project L. The Wind Tribe, the indigenous people of the Republic, had long been researching the wolf-type Zoids that symbolized the Republic, and in anticipation of the coming times, they were shifting their development towards combat-type Zoids. This machine was developed as a multi-purpose, high-mobility Zoid that would be designed primarily for group combat, based on the instincts and characteristics of the fast-growing wolf-like wild creatures that inhabited many regions of the Republic and its allies, and for which high productivity was found.
Originally, this machine was prepared to compensate for the low productivity of Project L, but it was hastily selected as the main machine to fight against the Tiger because the progress and future of Project L was uncertain. This was inevitable since the information and technology obtained from the all-out development operation conducted under Project L was also introduced into Project W.
Although this machine was less powerful and less armored than the Sabre Tiger, it was almost equal in terms of mobility, close-range combat, and shooting abilities, and it surpassed it in speed as well as enemy search capabilities. Project W, which was already in the final stage of completion when it was put on the production line at the prototype stage, was given the official name of the RHI-3 Command Wolf, and it was decided to introduce it immediately.
- Irregular Spec.
As it turns out, as the Command Wolves were produced, individual differences would surface. It was discovered that there were leaders in the wild species, and if a unit was formed by a group of non-leaders, their ability to fight as a group significantly decreased. It was impossible to modify the Zoid's instincts in any way while it was still in its wild form, such as by choosing excellent pilots or making changes to its basic programming.
Conversely, however, it was found that when a unit consisted of a leader machine with a commander pilot that was paired with general machines, they didn't require a detailed battle program, and the instincts of the wild species were capable of carrying out precise group battles according to the situation. Although the unit was temporarily deemed unfit for production, the problem was resolved by capturing packs of wild Zoids, resulting in improvements to the performance of the Command Wolf.
In addition, the use of wild individuals that had been acting alone required time-consuming communication, as with the Shield Liger, and required patience from the pilot. However, it has been confirmed that once trust is established between the pilot and the machine, the machine can show capabilities that exceed its specifications. These machines were used exclusively by reconnaissance units, special forces, or mercenaries who often worked alone.
According to the records, one mercenary's black Command Wolf was nothing more than scrap that had been damaged and left on the battlefield, and was repaired with substitute parts that fell short of the original specs. Furthermore, because it was equipped with a Long Range Rifle obtained from an arms dealer, the machine had poor operability due to problems such as excessive weight. However, the mercenary who had formed a trust with this machine, aided by their advanced piloting skills, was able to exhibit performance far superior to that of the Army's normal Command Wolves, and it's said that they sometimes demonstrated capabilities even greater than those of the Shield Liger.
Thereafter, the selection of individuals at the time of wild captures was carefully carried out, and was set as the most important point in the production of other Zoids.
- Actual Combat Introduction
In ZAC 2042, the Command Wolf had become a White Wolf quite like the guardian diety of the Wind Tribe, which had been depicted on their armor since ancient times. It was deployed to the battlefield to intercept the Imperial Force's Sabre Tiger, which had launched further invasions prior to the introduction of the Shield Liger. In response, it was found that three of them could fight on even grounds against a single Sabre Tiger. Although it wasn't effective enough to overturn the war situation, it succeeded in fulfilling its initial purpose and slowed the progress of the Imperial Army by a considerable amount.
Although the Shield Liger was later successfully developed, its production wasn't smooth and its deployment in actual combat was greatly delayed because of the time required to coordinate the Zoids and Pilots. On the other hand, the introduction of the Command Wolf, whose problems had been solved by the time of its initial prototype, was swiftly implemented, and from the second production type to the final production, the format and production lines were carried out in Helic's home country. Thereafter, factories were set up in various regions of their allied territories, and a large number of machines adapted to each region were produced. Because of its combat power and versatility, the Command Wolf soon reigned as the main machine that played a central role in the Republican Army's Zoids Forces.
* The Command Wolf manual uses the name Saber Tiger throughout the wolf's history. We opted to change this to Sabre Tiger as that would be the version of the Zoid that was being developed at the time, not the late model Saber Tiger.
- History of the Command Wolf Empire Spec.
- Blood-Soaked Fangs
"This is the 6th Infantry Reconnaissance Unit. Enemy Republican Zoids were captured. 8 Godos, 8 Guysacks, 4 Cannon Tortoises, and 6 Command Wolves, for a total of 26 units. Based on their unit numbers, we believe they're from the Army's 14th Special Zoids Force."
"Second Lieutenant, this is Lieutenant Colonel Mova's unit!"
"Yeah, there's no shortage of them. It's time to right this wrong. Let's get to work!"
"Roger that."
The 14th Special Zoid Force of the Helic Republic's Northern Army, led by Command Wolves, was heading for the Diehl Plateau, the site of the fierce ongoing battle in Verna, and was hurrying to the front lines to be restocked. However, there was an unscheduled Command Wolf unit approaching them. The nine wolves were coated in red, a symbol of the Empire. The White Wolves, the guardian dieties of the Republic, had been stained red from the blood of their former comrades' machines.
The 44th Verna Independent Task Force of the Zenebas Empire, also known as the Bloody Fang, was led by Second Lieutenant Wall Garlei. The hunt of the Imperial Wolves, intent on making their red armor even darker, begins now.
- Tiger Hunters
Captain Wall Garlei belonged to the Zoid Unit of the Verna National Army of the Helic Republic Alliance. He was one of the leading Zoid Pilots in the Verna Nation, and was the first Alliance member to receive the state-of-the-art Command Wolf, the "White Wolf", which had been called the Helic Republic's Guardian Diety because of its excellent war record. The Garlei Squadron was a small unit of only three machines that had been converted from Guysacks, but it was dispatched not only to the vicinity of its home country but also to the distant battlefields, and was introduced into the fight against the Sabre Tiger, the original target of the Command Wolf's development. The unit was so successful that it was given the nickname of "Tiger Hunters", and their combat data was incorporated into the basic tactical format for the fight against the Sabre Tiger, contributing greatly to the development of the Command Wolf in actual combat.
Garlei himself was also given the title of Ace, and his name was heard throughout the Central Continent. The achievements of Garlei's unit weren't just limited to their war results, they were also said to symbolize the bond between the Helic Republic and its ally, Verna, and inspired other allies who were in the same position, and were affected by Garlei's work. The Republic enjoyed a momentary taste of success with the unexpected introduction of the Command Wolves.
- The Raging Wolves
The battlefield expanded with each passing year, and in ZAC 2044, in the early stages of the Central Continent War, the Garlei unit, now up to 18 machines, were seen in the Battle of Valde, a major conflict. In the midst of this battle which spanned two months — advancing — and retreating, Garlei received a message from his home country.
"The Country of Verna has entered urban warfare."
The Imperial Army was developing a battle effort to capture Verna alongside the Battle of Valde.
"Even if my unit has to go alone, we're going to Verna!"
Garlei's voice was drowned out by his superior, Lieutenant Colonel Rof Morva, who gave priority to the Valde campaign. The Garlei unit, defying their superiors in the face of the situation developing in their beloved homeland, left the battlefield and hurried to Verna, without regard for the violations of military regulations.
By the time they arrived, however, the Republic garrison had left the country, and the Republic's heavy artillery units had begun indiscriminate attacks against Verna's military facilities, fearing that they might be diverted to the Imperial Army. Attacked by both the Republican Army, which had deemed them a rebel unit, and the Imperial Army, which had judged them to be the enemy, the Garlei unit was wounded or struck down one after another.
The members of Garlei's unit, who had now lost their men, their friends, and were on the verge of losing their beloved people and homeland, let out monstrous cries at this tragic sight. As if in response, the wild instincts of the Command Wolves in their unit awakened, and one after another, the Zoids of both armies were buried in the bloodbath. Amidst the heaps of wreckage and debris, nine Command Wolves stood still. Coated in the oil of the other Zoids and the blood of their pilots, they had already become beasts far removed from the "White Wolves" that they had been. The cries of these wolves echoed throughout the silent lands.
- Birth of the Bloody Fang
Verna surrendered. However, Major General Dee Rosat of the now-ruling Imperial Army uncharacteristically restored the Verna regime to its pre-surrender state with the only stipulation being a
"promise of loyalty to the Guylos Empire." He further promoted economic reconstruction with Imperial aid, thereby arranging for Verna to be treated not as an occupying power, but as an ally of the Empire. The Empire had become their friends, and the Republic, traitors.
The people of Verna accepted this arrangement as a matter of course. The Garlei unit was granted amnesty. Rosat was fascinated by the Command Wolves' demonic battle, which had unfolded before his eyes, and the people praised them as the Soul of Verna for rushing to the country's aid in its time of need. The stigma behind prisoners of war wasn't ideal. Rosat gave them the name of the 44th Verna Independent Task Force of the Zenebas Empire as a unit under his direct control, and they remained loyal to Rosat for the rest of their lives for showing them and their homeland such affection.
Before launching the attack, their commander, Captain Wall Garlei, sent a message to the enemy.
"With our friends who have joined the stars, our beloved people, and Lord Rosat at our sides, witness the Bloody Fangs!"
The 26 units of Helic's Northern Army's 14th Special Zoids Force, led by Lieutenant Colonel Rof Morva, had disappeared from Planet Zi 15 minutes after this transmission, without ever seeing the Diehl Plateau. However, their revenge wasn't over. Hope. They sought to crush the Republic's hopes. The eradication of the Blue Lion, the Shield Liger. The revenge story of the Empire's red wolves now begins.
- Fuselage Variations
- Command Wolf (Zenebas Empire Army Spec.)
Command Wolf was the main Zoid of the Helic Republic, boasting high productivity and high performance, and was the best Zoid used at the front lines even after the Central Continent War.
It was produced at factories in various locations outside of the Republic, and its production numbers were enormous. Although the machine was developed as part of the war against the Sabre Tiger, its superiority led to its deployment in the Republican Army, their allies, and even mercenary units, making it a constant mainstay on the battlefield.
The appearance of this machine stalled the advance of the Sabre Tiger and other mobile units, and the Imperial Army, troubled by this situation, decided to organize a unit using the enemy machine, the Command Wolf, as a temporary measure in parallel with the development of a new machine, thus carrying out the "fight poison to poison" policy. The response to the Enemy Command Wolf was to introduce all types of machines, including those abandoned due to damage, those obtained via surrenders, and those confiscated from factories in occupied countries, even those used by rebellious allies or mercenary units.
This response was inexpensive and produced effective results. By organizing their Sabre Tiger units, which had little hope of defeating the Republic's Shield Liger forces fighting alongside Command Wolves, with their own Command Wolves, they were able to fight on equal footing.
The sight of the Republic's guardian diety attacking in red, the symbol of the Empire, inflicted great psychological damage not only on the Republic's soldiers, but also its people. The White Wolf reincarnated as the Red Fangs of the Empire attacked the Republican Army in packs.
- Command Wolf (Zenebas Empire Army Spec. / Late Type)
The Imperial Army Command Wolf evolved at the same time as the Republican Army's changes to the machine. However, new units, such as official additional armaments, were produced at the Republic's home factories in order to prevent the outflow of information to the Empire. For this reason, it was difficult to obtain new equipment, and if an Imperial machine was equipped with such equipment, it was a trophy from having destroyed the enemy, or in other words, proof of being an ace. On the other hand, the Republic's soldiers nicknamed them Hyena Commands because they would search the battlefields's destroyed machines for spare parts and research.
Some of the good machines and parts were sent to the Imperial headquarters along with combat data, and were used in research for the next mainstay Zoid, the Lightning Saix.
