- Basic Combat Information
Moving onto basic information; the game has a fighting game's generic combat system. You have four buttons on the right hand side that are effective for different combinations of attacks. However, the effectiveness of those attacks, and the response time (or response at all-) is heavily dependant on being able to use them correctly. Thankfully, this is not hard to do, as the list of combinations is pretty short (in comparison to other games of the genre).
Use the highlighted sections in the image to match the cap color below for more information.
Zoid -
Text at the top displays your Zoids name.
HP -
The main green bar is your health/HP bar. Once this hits zero, you lose the match.
Pilot -
The pilot icons are ... well, the pilots. This shows who is piloting the main Zoid, and who the co-pilots are.
Battle Total -
The symbol in the middle shows how many fights there are in a single battle. By default, you only fight a Zoid once, and so the symbol remains a figure-eight. The number of rounds per battle can be changed from the options menu.
Damage Indicator -
There are several small bars beneath the main health bar. These are damage indicators. As they start to flash, you'll notice electricity coming off of your Zoid. If too many bars are knocked out, and you receive too much 'battle damage' at once, your Zoid will begin to lose armor and show visible damage.
Battles Won -
Finally, the circles underneath of all that other stuff shows how many rounds each Zoid has won. Since the Zoids only battle once by default, there is only one circle in this screen shot.
Weapon Counter -
To prevent excessive spamming, some buttons are limited in their function. These icons show how many times you've used specific attacks/button combinations, and if you continue to spam them, eventually, these bars will drop to empty, and the attack will temporarily cease to function. This is important to pay attention to. If your Zoid is not using its weapons when you tell it to, this is probably why.
Core Counter -
Last but not least is a monitor of the Zoid Core. As Zoids take in damage, and strike out against their opponents, they will begin to rank up this 'hit counter'. As they do, you'll notice the core begin to flicker, and soon, become a radiant ball of energy. Once the numbers hit 100, your Zoid will be able to initiate one of its special attacks. Special attacks can be used with any of the three main attack buttons, for different attacks that will deal significant damage. Be attentive to where you're aiming your attacks, however. It is more than possible for enemy Zoids to dodge an EX attack, and close range EX attacks will fall short if the Zoid is too far away.
- Combat Moves
Melee -
The main button you'll be focusing on is the A/Green button. This is your generic close quarter attack. Holding the analog stick down, and moving it towards or away from the enemy can result in different attacks. This is the only attack that is always available, even when all attacks have run out.
* Tip: If you old down the A button, you'll hear a zinging noise and see a light appear on your Zoid. When you release the button you'll use a weaker version of your melee special.
Secondary Weapon -
The Y button is for secondary weapons. If your basic Zoid has enough weapons, this usually runs the third 'generic' weapon on your Zoid. It is also the button most frequently used for extra/custom equipment. Similar to the A button, the function changes by manipulating the analog stick.
Cannonry -
The B button is usually for cannons or other long ranged weapons on the Zoid. If you hold it down, it will lock onto the enemy and improve your chances of hitting.
EX Attack -
The X button is used when you are ready to use a special attack. Special attacks can be used when your Zoids hit counter has reached 100. Special attacks can be used with any of your three weapons, for different damages and attacks. Hit X first, then any of the three main attack buttons.
Jump -
The R button is for jumping. This can be used to bounce off of the enemies or dodge, but I honestly wouldn't suggest it for dodging.
