- Military History

The Old War, Rollout

The Raynos was deployed in the Old War to fight off the Zenebas Empire's Redler, claiming superiority of the sky.

Past 40 Years, Rehabilitation Project

After the Grand Catastrophe of Planet Zi, the Redler population almost fell to extinction. However, the Republic was quick to implement a conservation policy that would look after these endangered populations of Zoids. During this length of time the Raynos population stabilized. As the Western Continent War popped off, there were two lines of thought being carefully balanced: The production of high-tech Zoids, and the production of Zoids who, while inferior to these state-of-the-art machines, could be produced in large numbers. The latest Storm Sworder, which made use of the Organoid System, was difficult to mass produce, yet air superiority had already been such an important part of the Republic's defense. Thus in ZAC 2101 it was decided that the dog fighter of the Old War would be returned to active combat, as their population now had sufficient numbers.

ZAC 2101, January, Bombing of Nixie Base

The president of the Republic offered a cease fire to Prozen after the taking of Nixie Base. However, having fully withdrawn his forces, he remained silent. Then, on the final day of the deadline, bombs rang out around Nixie Base. The base was being bombed by Zabats being deployed from modified Whale Kings flying at an incredibly high 30,000 meters. Though Raynos were scrambled to intercept the unmanned Zoids, they weren't able to hit the Whale Kings, who were well outside the range of their interceptor missiles, which had been installed in anticipation of a sea battle. In the end, this battle was handled by modified Salamanders.

ZAC 2101, March, Defense of Nixie Base

What was a handicap in the last battle came in clutch for the second when Wardicks from the Empire invaded now Republican-captured space. The Wardicks rushed Nixie's coast, and found themselves struggling against the Raynos, which were already equipped for anti-sea operations. This operation was a distraction, giving the Empire time to land the Death Stinger K.F.D.s at Nixie Base.

ZAC 2101, June, The Battle of the Andar Sea

The Republic finally began their efforts to move the battle from Europa to the Dark Continent of Nyx. They launched with Ultra Saurus the Carrier and a plethora of air and sea combat Zoids, including the Raynos. During this fight they fought against Wardicks of the Empire, but as the battle dragged out, Zoids from both sides were forced to return to their ships to refuel. This moment was exploited by the Guylos Empire, who launched a wave of sinkers to take advantage of the dire situation. With no other choice, the Ultra turned its forces toward the Triangle Daras, a region filled with fierce electromagnetic storms.

ZAC 2101 ~, Battle of the Dark Continent

When Raynos was scheduled for mass production again, it was with intent to take part in the upcoming battle of the Dark Continent. While they were never shown or featured during this fight, we can assume that some did make it to the battle, as they were present during the battle of the Andar Sea.

ZAC 2106, Battle over the Florecio Ocean

During this year a formation of Raynos took part in a battle against the Empire's Chimera BLOX over an uncharted island in Florecio Ocean. Though the Raynos were 6 in number, they were up against roughly 40 Flyscissors and a number of Storch. Though they'd taken out 10 Flyscissors, more than twice what they'd lost, this was still considered an overwhelming success for the Empire, as Flyscissors could be manufactured for less than a 10th what a Raynos would cost.

Desperate to get this information to its superiors, one Raynos broke away from the battle. A unit of only three Flyscissors stood in its path, and when they took chase, the Raynos dove towards the water, and used its impressive maneuverability to pull up just in time to avoid a crash. Two of the pursuing Flyscissors weren't so lucky, and the third was destroyed by gunfire. However, just as the Raynos was breaking free of the siege, it turned back, intent on rescuing its ally, even when there were still 30 Flyscissors remaining.

Head of the Chimera unit, Aqua, made the decision to call the Chimera BLOX off. He recognized that the pilot of the Raynos was a skilled pilot who'd make quick work of their test machines. He decided to intercept it himself, in his Storch. However, this story does not see a conclusion.

- Notable Facts

  • There's a common misconception that the Raynos is the only aerial Zoid not to use the Magnesser System. This is perhaps based on that one dramatic scene in New Century /ZERO where, when Jamie (the Wild Eagle) wakes up, the boosters flare and the Zoid pulls out of its nose dive. These theatrics aside, there's no official mention of this being the case. The Raynos relies on the Magnesser System like every other flying Zoid.

- Equipment Information

- 3-Barrelled Beam Gun x1

3-Barrelled Beam Gun x1: 3連装ビーム砲×1

The Raynos' primary weapon is the 3-Barrelled Beam Gun on the chest, which fires rounds of energy. In the NC0 anime, this is depicted as each barrel firing one at a time in rapid succession, barraging the enemy in gunfire.

- 3D Electronic Radar

3D Electronic Radar: 3D電子式レーダー×1

Raynos is equipped with a 3D Electronic Radar, which is installed to the back. This radar is used to search out enemy Zoids, which is useful when the Raynos' primary opponent is the Redler, a Zoid that specializes in hit-and-run tactics.[1]

- 72mm Vulcan Gun x2

72mm Vulcan Gun x2: 72mmバルカン砲×2

These two guns are installed to the sides of the tail, and rely on automatic fire. They rotate up and down, able to target a variety of enemies.

- Anti-Aircraft Missile Storage

Anti-Aircraft Missile Storage: 対空ミサイル格納

Though this item doesn't see much use in the lore, the belly doubles as a missile storage bay.

- Spike Claw x2

Spike Claw x2: スパイククロー×2

The large hooked talons on the Raynos' feet are a weapon all their own. They don't see much use in official media.

- Sturm Claw x2

Sturm Claw x2: シュツルムクロー×2

The Sturm Claws are attached to the front of the wings. Similar to the Spike Claws, they don't see much use. However, since the Raynos is often up against the Redler, another aerial melee Zoid, they're an important tool in its arsenal. It's said that battles between the Raynos and Redler turn out about 50/50.

- Featured In Media

- Zoids New Century /ZERO Anime

Raynos appeared as a rare supersonic combat Zoid in the anime New Century /ZERO. After Jamie's Pteras was totaled, the Blitz Team traded it in for parts and replaced it with the Raynos. It becomes iconic of the Wild Eagle, Jamie's alter ego, and remained as a team Zoid until the end of the series.

- Zoids Fuzors

In Zoids Fuzors there's a special Raynos variant belonging to the PKB (Peace Keeping Bureau). These feature standard equipment with bright white armor, a black frame, orange cockpits, and blue accent parts on their legs and belly. They were assigned as body guards for aerial transports.
