Story Information
Pilots: Introduction:
  • Tis
  • Kai
The Mirage Fox is a fox-type Zoid designed for incredibly cold environments, making it fit for harsh weather conditions. It is rumored that the two Mirage Foxes were raised in synchronization with their pilots, though this cannot be proven.  [1]

- Details of Design

Weapon Interchangeability

The Mirage Fox, like most Zoids released in the Original line, is designed to have several different variations, all based on the weapons and armor that were equipped. The kits came with the pieces to make all such variations. They included the Mirage Fox Type A (with the Wing Blades), Mirage Fox Type B (with the Laser Vulcan Gun), and the Cold District type (with basic Shadow Fox armor).

In addition, the way that the Wing Blades are set up, it's possible to mix and match them. For example, you can set an additional Wing Blade unit on the tail, fastening it to the side pegs.

- Military History

Early History, Kai and Tis

Although the history of the Mirage Fox is shrouded in mystery, there are rumors abound for where these Zoids came from. They were already equipped with weapons when first discovered, so it's theorized that they were built by a military establishment or something similar that had the funds and power to do so.

It's also theorized that the Mirage Fox was developed alongside a Synchronized Pilot program, in which the children pilots were raised alongside the Zoids from the very beginning. Although this is just conjecture in the military, Ki and Tis were both known to be more physically capable than the average person. Ki had high intelligence while Tis had excellent hearing, and the both of them had a close bond with their Zoids.

End of the Central Continent War, Kai and Tis

During the closing years of the Central Continent War, two Mirage Fox intercepted a Mammoth, its pilot a deserter of the Republican Army who was returning home. With the Smoke Dischargers jamming his radar he stumbled right into the foxes, at which point they opened their cockpits to reveal 2 children. Yard Bans considered reporting the incident, but having been through enough war himself, he was concerned that the children would be taken by the military and drawn up into the war themselves. So, he opted to take the children home to raise them as his own.

Later, the Imperial Army's advance guard, led by Byan, was moving through the forest near the village. They hoped to use the snowstorm to pass through the territory unnoticed. Their unit consisted of some Buster Heads and a Dimetrodon piloted by Byan himself. When the foxes detected them, they went to see what was going on, and became involved in a battle with the unit. They managed to drive the Imperial Army away, but only for a short time.

Byan sent for additional equipment, and was given a unit of several Saber Tigers. He hoped to capture the unknown species of Zoid and add it to his collection, knowing the Empire would benefit greatly from their capabilities. This time, when the fox's charged into battle, Foxy was heavily damaged by the Dimetrodon. During the chaos of the battle, Zappa's unit of Command Wolves came to the assistance of the Mirage Foxs, knowing that they shared a common enemy.

The Empire unit was once again driven away, but only after Yard's Mammoth was totaled by a missile from the Dimetrodon. Although Ki and Tis returned home, they chose to leave in the night, while Yard was asleep. Now that the military knew of the Foxies, they could never stay in the village, or it would be drawn into the war along with them. It is theorized that they became a part of the Republican Army after that, evidenced by the very similar Shadow Fox, which was developed later.

- Equipment Information

- 3D Radar & Multi-Ear Sensor x2

3D Radar & Multi-Ear Sensor x2: 3Dレーダー&マルチイヤーセンサー×2

The 3D Radar & Multi-Ear Sensor is, well, exactly what it sounds like. The ears are designed to detect enemies from a distance, and triangulate their location. There isn't much detail about the functionality of this weapon, but in the story, Tis' helmet allows her to synchronize her excellent hearing with Foxy's.

- Anchors x4

Anchors x4: 脚部固定用アンカー×4

Each leg of the Mirage Fox is equipped with an anchor. In the standard Shadow Fox variation, this is often used for high-recoil weapons.

- AZ 70mm Internal-Type Electromagnetic Net Gun

AZ 70mm Internal-Type Electromagnetic Net Gun: AZ70mm内蔵型電磁ネット砲

The Mirage Fox retains the Electromagnetic Net Gun of the basic Shadow Fox. This opens up using a hatch on the bottom of the tail, and fires a net that traps the enemy and delivers a high-voltage charge.

- Compound Combat Sensors

Compound Combat Sensors: 戦闘用複合センサー

Mirage Fox's unique cheek armor doubles as a compound sensor. There isn't a lot of information about how this weapon functions, or what exactly it detects. This equipment is on both versions of the Mirage Fox.

- Electron Bite Fangs

Electron Bite Fangs: エレクトロンバイトファング

Like many other canids, the Mirage Fox is able to charge its teeth with electrical energy. This is used to deliver a fierce bite to the enemy. However, the weapon doesn't see use in the series (with a charge) for us to be able to determine its effects or imagery. This image is referenced from the Konig Wolf.

- Multi Weapon Rack

Multi Weapon Rack: マルチウェポンラック

The Multi Weapon Rack is a diverse piece of equipment that allows the Mirage Fox to install a wide range of weapons. It also has multiple points of articulation, meaning anything installed to it can rotate 360 degrees as well as point upwards or downwards.

- Optical Camouflage

Optical Camouflage: 光学迷彩

The Mirage Fox is recognized for its excellent stealth. This relies on a wide variety of systems, including Optical Stealth. This system works by rapidly generating images around the Zoid, but depending on processing power, this can leave room for visible distortions when moving at high speed. It is not clarified how much processing power the Mirage Fox has. [2]

- Shoulder Weapon Rack

Shoulder Weapon Rack: ショルダーウェポンラック

A secondary weapon rack. Unfortunately, this rack is woefully underused in all Shadow Fox variants, so there's not much to add here.

- Silencer System

Silencer System: 消音システム

Also benefitting the Mirage Fox's stealth is the Silencer System. This is a special system that muffles the sounds of the fox. A Mirage Fox traveling through the forest will be much quieter than a Zoid of similar size, and allows it to sneak up on targets unnoticed. It is implied that the silencer system applies to the Fox's entire body, not just its footfalls, and is a system that requires activation. [2]

- Smoke Discharger x6

Smoke Discharger x6: スモークディスチャージャー×6

Mirage Fox carries over the Smoke Dischargers that are seen in the basic Shadow Fox, integrating them into the new leg armor and still keeping the ones on the body. The use of the smoke dischargers is also stated to have a high radar-disturbing effect, which makes it difficult for enemies to reach out for help. In the story, the dischargers are mistaken for fog, so discharge a light color.

- Super Directional Voice Transmission System

Super Directional Voice Transmission System: 超指向性音声発信システム

One system that sets the Mirage Fox apart, aside from its obvious weapon, is the Super Directional Voice Transmission System. This system focuses the Fox's voice in a very specific direction, allowing it to communicate with its sister unit. Mirage Foxs can coordinate their attacks so well, that enemies are said to be completely unable to keep up with their movements. This form of 'talking to each other' is fairly unique among Zoids equipment.

- Strike Laser Claw x4

Strike Laser Claw x4: ストライクレーザークロー×4

Mirage Fox is able to use the Strike Laser Claw, a special move that covers the claws in golden energy. Laser weapons are able to cut through enemy armor much better than those without. Even going so far as to completely tear limbs from medium-sized Zoids. In addition, Mirage Fox is one of the first Zoids to exemplify using these energy charges with the back paws. Kicking oncoming attackers to do just as much damage.

- Wing Blade

Wing Blade: ウイングブレード

Mirage Fox's unique weaponry. The Wing Blades use an ultra-high frequency blade that emits a golden light and a beautiful sound, slicing through enemies similar to a laser blade. This charge can be used regardless of if the blades are folded up or deployed. Their position on the Multi-Weapon Rack also means they can swing a full 360 degrees, providing the fox with some of the best articulation of any blade weapon.
